WE ARE

Page 4: Holiday Explorers Inc · 2017. 11. 14. · to meet the needs of our clients while transitioning to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and My Aged Care funding models.

I feel privileged to introduce our 29th Annual Report which details another successful year of operation for Holiday Explorers.

Our Tourist Members take a holiday with friends and enjoy the recreational experience and personal development opportunities in a socially inclusive and supported environment. This in turn provides support for parents and unpaid carers to have a break from the routine of caring for their family member with intellectual disability.

The Holiday Explorers team has been hard at work implementing strategies to ensure we continue to meet the needs of our clients while transitioning to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and My Aged Care funding models.

As part of this process the Board has undertaken a full review of the Holiday Explorers Constitution, and amendments are being proposed at this year’s AGM to support the new Holiday Explorers operating models - while staying true to our core values.

I am also delighted to report that Holiday Explorers is now a registered NDIS Service Provider and has started providing services to NDIS clients.

This year we have provided 170 holidays and 35,093 hours of respite. 407 of our 516 Tourist Members took holidays during the year.

As always, we rely on the availability and hard work of our team of 68 volunteers. We appreciate the value that they add to this organisation: without them, we could not exist.

Finally, I would like to thank our funding providers, the Holiday Explorers Board, our Executive Officer Lisa Albinus and all the staff at Holiday Explorers for their effort, dedication and commitment to Holiday Explorers and its clients.

EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S REPORT

Lisa AlbinusExecutive Officer

Our community is changed by those out in it. Holiday Explorers celebrates 29 years of supporting people with intellectual disability to access and explore their community via the 5,260 holidays conducted since 1988!

We are a proudly South Australian not for profit organisation and now an NDIS registered provider, providing incredible personal growth opportunities for people with intellectual disability: and the opportunities and access keep growing.

The NDIS presents an opportunity to ask, “what does Holiday Explorers mean to you?” This year we asked our clients and were honoured to hear that we play an important role in their lives, achieving a 91% satisfaction rating for our service, and gaining valuable feedback to help us plan ahead.

We are pleased we have inaugural members from 1988 still using our service; as we are now registered with My Aged Care we can continue to provide services for clients over 65 years of age.

Holiday Explorers met 100% of requirements to continue accreditation under the certificate level of the Australian Service Excellence Standards (ASES). The

report highlighted the long standing associations and strong working relationships developed and sustained over the years with tourism and community operators having a significant impact on the quality of offerings to the tourists. Of particular note from the review team was “the way clients spoke about the value and impact of the holidays in their lives; many stating that the

opportunity to enjoy respite knowing that their family member was safe and having a great time meant so much”.

We have produced 97 Editions of Holidaytime (our holiday brochure) since 1988 and we are getting excited about next year’s 100th edition. We know that the tourists love receiving their Holidaytime and we’re aiming to maintain the integrity of this publication as we include details for the NDIS.

Staff and Volunteers Thank you to our staff and volunteers who collectively add value to our clients’ holiday experiences and strengthen community access and awareness. We sincerely thank all our current and retiring volunteers for their excellent service, and we are pleased to welcome another talented group of new volunteers.

Staff Years of Service Awards Ellen Griffiths, Tamara Illman & Rosalie Pearce were rewarded for their 5 years of continuous service with travel vouchers to enjoy a holiday themselves.

Holiday Explorers is very fortunate to have a passionate and experienced team of Board members, staff, volunteers and supporters who are truly committed to its vision – to provide more than a holiday. We are a small organisation with our collective efforts making a real difference in the lives of over 500 people with intellectual disability. In 2018, I look forward to celebrating our 30th year and working together to meet and exceed our client’s goals and aspirations.

“This was Amanda’s 2nd trip and as with the 1st one, the staff were great. As a parent, it’s a worry as to how our children (now adults) cope when were not around. It’s re-assuring to know they are interacting with others to help build self-confidence and life skills. Well done to your team, especially the caring volunteers.” Parent

This financial report is a special purpose financial report prepared in order to satisfy the financial reporting requirements of the Associations Incorporation Act 1985 and for distribution to Holiday Explorers Management and the Association’s Members. The Association is not a reporting entity. The financial report has been prepared in accordance with the requirements of the Associations Incorporations Act 1985 and the following Australian Accounting Standards:

AASB 116: Property, Plant and Equipment

AASB 119: Employee Benefits

AASB 1031: Materiality

No other Australian Accounting Standards, Urgent Issues Group Consensus Views or other authoritative pronouncements of the Australian Accounting Standards Board have been applied.

The financial report has been prepared on an accruals basis and is based on historic costs and does not take into account changing money values, or except where specifically stated, current valuations of non-current assets.

The following material accounting policies, which are consistent with the previous period unless otherwise stated, have been adopted in the preparation of this financial report:

(a) Grant Funding Grants are brought to account in the period to which they relate. Where there is a benefit to a future period, provision for such benefit is made in the accounts.

(b) Fixed Assets Plant and Equipment, Camping Equipment and Motor Vehicles are depreciated over their estimated useful lives. All assets are first depreciated in the year of acquisition. The diminishing value method is used for all categories of assets.

For grant funding acquittal purposes any equipment purchased with grant funds from 2011/12 onward will be expensed in the year of purchase and not depreciated.

(c) Funding Carried Over to a Subsequent Period Where funds are carried over to a subsequent period, this has been done on the basis that such treatment will allow a more accurate matching process of income with the related expenses to the period in which the costs relate.

INDEPENDENT AUDITOR’S REPORTTo the members of Holiday Explorers Incorporated

Report on the Financial ReportWe have audited the accompanying financial report, being a special purpose financial report, of Holiday Explorers Incorporated, which comprises the balance sheet as at 30 June 2017, the statement of income and expenditure for the year ended on that date, statement of cash flows, explanatory notes and the statement by the board.

The Responsibility of the Board for the Financial ReportThe board of management of the association is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of the financial report in accordance with any applicable Australian Accounting Standards, the Associations Incorporation Act 1985, or other mandatory professional reporting requirements. The board of management’s responsibility also includes designing, implementing and maintaininginternal control relevant to the preparation and fair presentation of the financial report that is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error; selecting and applying appropriate accounting policies; and making accounting estimates that are reasonable in the circumstances.

Auditor’s ResponsibilityOur responsibility is to express an opinion on the financial report based on our audit. No opinion is expressed as to whether the accounting policies are appropriate to meet the needs of the members. We conducted our audit in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. These Auditing Standards require that we comply with relevant ethical requirements relating to audit engagements and plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance whether the financial report is free from material misstatement. An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial report. The procedures selected depend on the auditor’s judgement, including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the financial report, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, the auditor considers internal control relevant to the association’s preparation and fair presentation of the financial report in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the association’s internal control. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates made by the management committee, as well as evaluating the overall presentation of the financial report.

The financial report has been prepared for distribution to members for the purpose of fulfilling the board of management’s financial reporting obligations. We disclaim any assumption of responsibility for any reliance on this report or on the financial report to which it relates to any person other than the members, or for any purpose other than that for which it was prepared.

We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our audit opinion.

IndependenceIn conducting our audit, we have complied with the independence requirements of the Australian professional accounting bodies.

QualificationAs is common for organisations of this type, it is not practicable for Holiday Explorers Incorporated to maintain an effective system of internal control over all income from various sources prior to receipt. Accordingly, it was not practicable for our examination of those areas to extend beyond amounts recorded in the accounting records of the association.

Qualified Auditor’s OpinionIn our opinion, subject to the effects of such adjustments, if any, that might have been determined to be necessary had the limitations referred to in the above qualification paragraphs not existed, the financial report of the Holiday Explorers Incorporated:

a) presents fairly the association’s financial position as at 30 June 2017 and its’ performance for the year ended on that date; and

b) has been prepared based on accounting records maintained in accordance with the Associations Incorporation Act 1985, and is in accordance with the accounting policies outlined in Note 1 to the accounts.
