Itwas 1946.WorldWar II just ended and thousands returned home frommilitary service. Amongthemwas Virginia Holmes, a prize-winning commercial artist who came to Indianapolis to starther career in the advertising department at Downtown department store, L.S. Ayres. When itcame time to compose the stores 1946 holiday catalog, merchandise was in short supply. To Vll thesomewhat empty pages, Holmes created whimsical cherubs. The cherubs captured hearts and beganan Indianapolis holiday tradition that continues today. The following year, Ayres 75th anniversary, called for a special addition to the stores holiday plans.

Not only did Ayres perpetuate the cherubs appearance in their 1947 holiday advertising, but theyalso commissioned nationally recognized Indianapolis sculptor andHerron School of Art instructor,David Rubins to create a bronze cherub. The Cherubwas to be placed on the stores landmark clock, located on the outside of their building on the corner ofWashington andMeridian streets.

Cherub KeepsWatchAs legend has it, thewhimsical Cherubmysteriously appeared above the clock on Thanksgiving Eve

1947 to keep awatchful eye on the holiday shoppers until Santa took over on Christmas Eve. In the 67years since, thousands have had the pleasure of seeing the Cherub perched atop the famous clock eachholiday season. This tradition lives in thememories of a city and its grateful citizens.TheMayDepartment Store Co. purchased L.S. Ayres in 1986 and, in 1992, moved the Cherub to

its headquarters in St. Louis. There was tremendous public outcry when the Cherub did not appearthat holiday season. May donated the Cherub to the City of Indianapolis and in 1994Downtown Indybecame the Cherubs legal guardian.Keep an eye out the Cherubwill be appearing Downtown very soon!

  • Composer: George Frideric Han-del (1685-1759). Born in Germany,Handel made his name by bringingItalian opera to England and becamea naturalized British subject in hisearly 40s. After the success of theEnglish-language opera AlexandersFeast in 1836, he began to focus onEnglish choral music. Even though hewas heavily influenced by the ornatestyle of Italian baroque music, afterMessiah debuted in 1842 Handelnever composed in Italian again.Wealthy and respected at the time ofhis death, Handel was buried at West-minster Abbey with state honors.

What you need to know: Messi-ah consists of three parts, like Han-dels three-act operas, and the libretto(the words of an opera, musical orchoral composition) was written byCharles Jennens using text from theKing James Bible and the Book ofCommon Prayer.

Part 1 begins with prophecy of theVirgin Birth, followed by the annun-ciation to the shepherds from theGospel of Luke. Part II focuses on thePassion, Death, and Ascension ofChrist and ends with the Hallelujahchorus, the most widely known sec-tion of the composition. Part III ad-dresses redemption and the final vic-tory of Christ. Handels vision forMessiah was more modest than thelarge productions weve come to asso-ciate with the music, though moregroups are staging more intimateperformances.

In addition to the performanceslisted here, numerous church andschool groups make it a point to in-clude Messiah in their holidayprogramming each year.

Where have I heard that? Chancesare, youve heard Messiah, in partor whole, every December of yourlife, and will continue to forever andever and ever. Handels compositionshave also been featured on moviesand television shows as varied as ATree Grows in Brooklyn, The Simp-sons, Dead Poets Society, Scrubs,House, M.D., The West Wing andThe Good Wife. If youre a royalswatcher, his coronation anthem Za-dok the Priest has been performed at every British coronation since 1727.

Kerry Jennings, assistant profes-sor of voice, DePauw University, says:

Whether you prefer the full or-chestra and large choir of the ISO andSymphonic Choir or a performance

that is, in the words of the Indianapo-lis Chamber Orchestra, true to thecomposer's intentions: an intimateorchestra displaying the intricatevocal lines to their full majesty, thereare plenty of performances to choosefrom. In fact, why choose; go seemore than one.

Handel wrote perhaps his mostfamous work in less than four weeks. The work is so well- known and be-

loved that it is commonfor a performanceof this master-work to be asing-along. Fromthe lyrical to thedeclamatoryand from thedefeated to thetriumphant, this holiday

favorite will satisfy on every level.Originally an Easter offering, Messi-ah has become a virtual rite of pas-sage for singers and audiences duringthis holiday season, and music loversfrom all faith traditions will haveample opportunity to hear this work inall its glory in the coming weeks.

    SINCE 1906

Inspired at the close of World War II after nearly two decades of planning, the lights first appeared on Monument Circle in 1962. What followed was a simple program with a few speakers. Today it is one of

our states most celebrated holiday traditions.

As the organizations that have taken part each year for 52 years and on behalf of all who have cared for this tradition, IBEW #481 and

Quality Connection hope this beloved symbol of peace offers a joyful start to your holiday season!
