FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK Welcome to Week 3 Students in Years 3-6, and some in Year 2, had a wonderful day at the school swimming carnival on Friday. The students were at their best both in and out of the pool, with personal bests, broken records and outstanding team spirit and sportsmanship on display. Thank you to Miss Lavis for her organisation, Margot Pitzen for her support in running the event, and all of the parents who supported with timekeeping and packing up. It was a great way to kick off the new school year! Parent Information Sessions Our Parent Information Sessions (also called Class Meetings) will be held this week in the school library. The K-2 meeting will be at 4:00 p.m. on Monday (today) and the 3-6 session will be at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. I will give a brief welcome and outline of the school’s direction in 2020, which will be followed by a presentation by the assistant principal and their team for each session. Parent information sessions are an opportunity for parents and carers to hear about school directions, routines and class programs for the year, with regular updates being provided throughout the year through class newsletters (each term) and other forms of communication. The parent information sessions are also an opportunity to meet new teachers and pass on any important information that will lead to improved learning and wellbeing. in requesting additional meeting/s with your child’s class teachers to raise any matters or pass on further information regarding your child. Parent engagement is a contributing factor to a school’s success. I encourage everyone to be involved in their child’s education and ask ‘how can I best support my child’s learning at school?’ Cricket Trials – School cricket trials were held in Weeks 1 and 2. As a result, Cooper Glass, Ned Harrison, Klay Liddell, Archie Swan, Ryder McKillop and Nick Robards attended the Southern Riverina Trial in Lockhart. Unfortunately, none of the boys were selected to attend the Riverina Pre-selection trials. Team selections for our participation in the PSSA Cricket Knockout are well underway! Kindergarten – Congratulations to all of the students in Kindergarten (and Miss Hemphill) who have now completed their first week of school! It has been great to see how settled the group are and how attentive they have been when I’ve visited the classroom. Thank you to our magnificent P&C who kindly invited parents to a Kindergarten coffee catch up last week. National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS): External Providers – As part of the NDIS, some parents/carers request that externally funded service providers attend our school setting to deliver specialist services, such as speech therapy and occupational therapy. If your child has an NDIS plan and you would like this to occur, there is a process that needs to be followed. This process needs to begin, or be renewed, at the start of each school year. Step 1 involves the parents/carers providing a written request to the school. Step 2 involves the parents/carers having a meeting with the principal to discuss the need, intended impact, alignment with the child’s Personalised Learning and Support Plan, requested delivery times and frequency, and why the child needs to access the service during school time. Decisions to allow external providers to deliver support at the school are made on a case-by-case basis and are at the principal’s discretion. Agreements are reviewed each year or as the school sees fit. A school’s core business is curriculum delivery and looking after the learning and wellbeing of each child. Therefore, the impact of such provisions need to be considered in order to serve the best interests of the child and ensure the school is meeting its curriculum delivery responsibilities. Making sure there are no gaps in the child’s learning is a priority. Step 3 if approved, the timing and frequency of external service delivery is to be negotiated with the principal. Less intrusive times, such as before school, during lunch, recess or Special Religious Education (SRE) times are preferable. At Holbrook Public School, we want to remove the obstacles preventing any child from receiving the support they need, but in doing so, we need to consider our own responsibilities as a school as well. Please note: requests from external providers (e.g. speech pathologists) will not be considered unless parents/carers have initiated contact and made a request. School Photos – Please ensure that students wear a clean full summer school uniform tomorrow and don’t forget to bring in your MSP Photography envelopes. Planning Days – This week, both teaching teams (K-2 and 3-6), will have the opportunity to work collaboratively to design engaging lessons and units together. They will analyse student data to ensure each child is learning at their individual point of need. K-2’s planning day will be on Wednesday and 3-6’s planning day will be tomorrow. Students will be learning in their home classes on activities related to the new Personal Development, Health and Physical Education unit. P&C Meeting – Our first P&C meeting of the year will be held this Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the school library. Everyone is welcome; you don’t need to be on the P&C executive to come along. We will be discussing the School Chaplaincy program and choosing a community representative to be on the selection panel. For our new parents, the National School Chaplaincy Program (NSCP) is a Commonwealth-funded initiative to support the emotional wellbeing of students and the broader school community through the provision of pastoral care services. They are trained in pastoral care and address overall wellbeing needs, including anxiety, building resilience, developing social skills, bullying and cyber safety, and the engagement and support of the parent community. School Sport – There are a plethora of sporting opportunities that are offered to students throughout the year. Many of these opportunities occur in Terms 1 and 2 due to the progressive nature of the events. I’ve explained the opportunities to a few parents again recently, so I thought I’d provide a brief description for everyone.

Carnivals – There are three main school carnivals throughout the year: swimming, cross country and athletics. Students turning 8 and above are able to participate. Unless sickness, injury, a recognised religious holiday or exceptional/urgent family circumstance exists, all students should be in attendance. We encourage all of our students to have a go and barrack for their teammates. At the school carnival, students can qualify to attend the Zone (Southern Riverina) carnival. From there, students can qualify to compete at the Regional (Riverina) and State (NSW) carnivals.

Representative Trials – At Holbrook Public School, representative trials are open to students in Years 4, 5 and 6. These trials involve a progressive representative selection of the most outstanding players in each sport and area. This begins at the school level, where students can be chosen to attend the Southern Riverina trials. From there, students are selected to represent the Riverina and then the state. Some sports progress from the school level straight to Riverina, and some sports have an additional level where students need to qualify for

Eastern Riverina or Western Riverina before going on to the Riverina level. Specific criteria from representative coaches is provided to guide selection at each level. Students competing or receiving coaching outside of school often have an advantage due to their experience, skills and confidence in the sport, although all students have the opportunity to trial at the school level. PSSA Knockouts – Schools can choose to enter a team into state wide PSSA knockouts. These decisions are made on a yearly basis depending on: student interest/talent, student numbers, and the availability of staff willing and able to coach and manage the team. Selection in these teams at Holbrook Public School is open to students in Years 4, 5 and 6. This year, we have entered teams in netball and cricket. Trials are held at the school for these teams, based on the skills and attributes required to participate. These competitions are open, therefore larger schools tend to have mainly Year 5 and 6 students in their teams. In this competition, each school team stays together and progresses through the rounds until they are beaten, or are crowned as State Champions. Please note: this year we have not entered an AFL team, as 18 players plus reserves are required. I have spoken with the organiser of the Paul Kelly Cup (a progressive gala day run by the AFL) who has assured me that two teams from the Culcairn competition will have the opportunity to progress to the next level in 2020. We have made it to the final in the last two years, but haven’t progressed. The Paul Kelly Cup only requires 12 players plus reserves, which is a better fit for our school enrolment profile at this point in time. Gala Days – Many knockouts, gala days and round robins are offered throughout the year from various sporting organisations. These are chosen at the school’s discretion when staff are willing and able to coach and manage the team and when timing permits. It is not possible to participate in all of these events, as there are many other areas of the curriculum that need to be taught, as well as other scheduled school events. At times, there are specific Year 3 and 4 or Year 5 and 6 competitions. If they are ‘open’ tournaments, students from Years 4, 5 and 6 will have the opportunity to trial.

At Holbrook Public School, we aim to develop the skills and capabilities of all students, so that they can participate confidently in physical activity and sport. Some students, due to their outstanding skills and attributes in sport, tend to have multiple sporting opportunities in Years 5 and 6. Each family should consider their child’s whole education and make a decision to either take up or decline the opportunities that are offered. For further information, a document entitled ‘Procedures for the Organisation and Management of School Sport and Physical Activity’ is available at the school or on our website. TENNIS Last week, the school selected Cooper Glass, Oscar King and Annie Triggs to attend the Riverina Tennis Pre-selection trials in Albury this Wednesday. Good luck, everyone!

SCHOOL SWIMMING CARNIVAL Last Friday, 7 February was a fantastic day for the swimming carnival at the Lavington Swim Centre. The students had a wonderful day of swimming and encouraging their fellow competitors. It was exciting to see so many students participating in as many races as they could and so many parents there to support their children.

A huge thank you to the many parents who volunteered to help out on the day. It makes our job so much easier and really helped to run a smooth, speedy carnival. A big thank you to the teachers, for all their efforts on the day. We cannot run these events without this fantastic support. An extra big thank you to Margot Pitzen who helped out on the day, even though her children no longer attend our school. Her expertise and assistance is very much appreciated. Congratulations to Paterson for winning the overall carnival on 231 points. Mackellar came second on 135 points, followed by Lawson in third on 91 points. There were five records broken at this year’s carnival. An excellent effort!

• 9yr Boys 50m Freestyle – Ollie Cardile (47.69) and Will Glass (48.10) both broke Cooper Glass’ 2018 record (48.19). Ollie will hold the new record.

• All Ages Boys 250m Freestyle – Blake Robards (28.06) and Jasper Hartwich (28.15) both broke Ryder McKillop’s 2018 record (34.90). Blake will hold the new record.
