Its first chosen name was the “Columbian Watch Co.” but this had already been copyrighted by the Waterbury Company. The name Hamilton was then chosen - a tribute to Lancaster’s founding father, Mr. Andrew Hamilton, a Scottish-born attorney who was instrumental in the town’s growth.By 1908 Hamilton was producing a lady’s pendant (convertible) watch and, following the USA’s entry into WWI, a small line of military style wire lug trench watches were available for men. Hamilton never looked back, arguably producing the highest quality American made watches from the 1920s through the 1960s.I am pleased to offer for sale the following CRANSTON model from the Hamilton firm, a nicely sculpted, mid-century modern timepiece that was first introduced in 1952 (also the year this example dates to). This 10kt Yellow Gold filled wristwatch is in excellent condition and features a handsome black enamel dial with 18k solid gold numerals and hour markers.Triple-signed, it measures 37mm end to end and 22.5mm in width (24mm with winding crown). This works out to be just shy of 1-1/2 inches in length by 7/8 of an inch wide, not counting the crown. It is powered by its original and higher-grade 19 jewel, manual wind mechanism that has been fully serviced by my watchmaker David to ensure it it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.The black enamel finished dial has been professionally restored and is in pristine condition. It features a 60 minute outer track border, applied 18kt Solid Gold numbers and diamond-shaped hour indicators, original Lance-style gold metal hands and a recessed sub-seconds dial with 60 second outer chapter and “sweep” gold seconds hand. Signed HAMILTON below the 12. What I really like about this model (and the Hamilton Boulton) is the round sub dial – most rectangular or square watches would have a matching shaped seconds dial but making it “round” like we see here truly adds a nice contrast.The solid glass crystal is in flawless condition, new old stock and made specifically for the Cranston model (removed in some photos to minimize glare). The 10 Karat Yellow Gold filled case is a beauty, finely sculpted and featuring “swooping” lugs. It is in excellent condition with no wear or brassing, perhaps a few small scratches. The

matching gold finish winding crown is not marked but I strongly believe it to be original. It is in excellent order and winds and sets smoothly.Turning the watch over I note that the back lid is in excellent condition with no wear or engravings – perhaps a few light scratches. It is stamped “HAMILTON” at one edge and “10kt Gold Filled” on the opposite side. Inside I find a beautiful Nineteen Jewel movement (with fancy Geneva Striping) that is signed Hamilton – USA – 19 Jewels – [Grade] 753 with serial number 27226F. This serial number (as it related to the grade 753) dates the watch to 1952. The inside case lid is signed Cranston - Hamilton W. Co., Lancaster PA - 10K Gold Filled with reference number and case maker name (Star Watch Case Co.) below.This fine watch has been completely disassembled, cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. It comes fitted on a new and high quality 17 black crocodile (grain) calf leather strap with matching gold buckle, ready to wear and enjoy. you add a fancy “notched” bezel to the picture you get one unique and amazing timepiece. When first introduced, both the Longines and Wittnauer All Proof 1200 watches were marketed as being extra thin and hermetically-sealed, making them better protected than most watches against common watch hazards.Quadruple-signed, this watch measures 39mm lug tip to lug tip and 33.5mm in width (35.5mm with original Wittnauer-signed steel winding crown). This works out to be just over 1-1/2 inches long by 1-5/16 inches wide, not including the original crown. It is powered by its original 17 jewel, manual wind Wittnauer Revue 76/3G caliber mechanism, the “Revue” series being Wittnauer’s finest. It has been fully serviced by my skilled watchmaker David prior to auction to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.The 100% original silver enamel dial is in pristine condition – untouched since it left the factory and without any flaws. It features a silver steel faceted outer track with projecting hour markers, genuine diamond markers in rhodium settings and original silver steel Baton-style hands. It was a strategic location, right next to the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad, one of the busiest railways into Chicago, and the Elgin factory would become the focal point of the town.By 1867 the first watch was marketed for sale, retailing for $115 (an amazing sum in today’s dollars) and Elgin was soon competing head-on with its chief competitor, Waltham, who (ironically) were instrumental in forming Elgin, as two of the original organizers were P.S. Bartlett and D.G. Currier, previously of Waltham firm. Bartlett and Currier would later join the Illinois Watch Co. of Springfield.If you have been looking for a ladies Art Deco Tank style watch that is a bit “different” from the rest I think you might be interested in the following model. It is a ladies doctors dial (or nurses) model from 1937, introduced at the same time as the men’s Dr. William Osler model and very similar in design (albeit smaller). The inside case lid is signed Cased and Timed by Elgin National Watch Co. – 10K Gold Filled – Illinois Watch Case Co., Elgin with case reference number below. This watch has been disassembled, cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. It is fitted on a new old stock (vintage, never worn) black cord bracelet and is attached to the watch with what appears to be its original yellow gold filled holders, complete with engraved detailing. This fine watch has been fully disassembled, cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. Comes fitted with a new 16mm deBeer Paris hand crafted lizard (grain) calf leather strap with matching color buckle. Its original 17 jewel, 420SS (Sweep Seconds) caliber mechanism has been fully serviced to ensure it keeps accurate time.The silver enamel finished dial is in excellent condition, professionally restored to its correct status. The word “Brevet” is French for patented, indicating this was a Swiss patented case design. The watch firm that is now known as Baume & Mericer of Geneva, Switzerland can trace its history back to 1830 when it was established as “Baume Freres” by brothers Louis-Victor and Joseph-Célestin Baume. The Baume’s motto was “Accept only perfection. Only manufacture watches of the highest quality.” First located in Les Bois, they would soon open a watch case workshop in Geneva and, in 1844, an English branch “Baume& Co.” under the direction of Celestin Baume in London. In 1880 they opened a factory in Coventry, England.The firm

of “Baume & Cie” of London and Geneva distinguished itself at the national exhibitions and world fairs that began to be organized from the second half of the 19th century onwards, in Paris (1878 and 1889), Melbourne (1890 and 1895), Zurich and Amsterdam (1883), London (1885 and 1890) and Chicago (1893), winning ten Grand Prix awards and seven gold medals. Following WWI the company was being run by William Baume but he would join forces with Paul Mericer (formerly Paul Tchereditchenko), born in Odessa to a Russian father and French mother. Operated by Piaget in the 1970s both Baume &

Mericer and Piaget are now owned by the Richemont Group.I am pleased to offer for sale the following vintage men’s timepiece from the firm, an 18kt Solid Yellow Gold “Baumatic” dresss model that dates to the late 1960s (ca 1968 to 1970) and is in excellent, original condition. This is a solid weight case and it weighs 22.5 grams just in gold alone – excluding the crystal, mechanism, movement, crown, dial, etc. This equals 8/10 of an ounce of .750 gold.This is no ordinary automatic wind watch for it features a high-grade Baume & Mericer 30 jewel Micro Rotor, self-winding mechanism. That’s right folks, thirty jewels. The micro rotor design was invented by Buren and it won, in 1964, the coveted Prix D’Honneur at the Swiss National Watch Exposition. The mechanism that won this price had 17 jewels, not 30, making this Baumatic example a rare bird.This fully signed timepiece measures 37.5mm lug tip to lug tip and 33mm in width (35.5mm with original cabochon sapphire crown). This works out to be 1-1/2 inches long by just over 1-1/4 in width, not including the original winding crown. It appears a bit larger in person given its narrower bezel framing – the dial itself is a good size. Powering this watch is the aforementioned Baume & Mericer gold finished 30 jewel, micro rotor automatic mechanism, routinely serviced so it winds and sets smoothly and keeps very good time.The 100% original white, enamel finished dial is in excellent condition – guaranteed untouched since it left the factory in Switzerland over 40 years ago. It features black enamel painted Roman numerals, original black lacquer finish Leaf-style hands and date window (semi-quickset) at the 3 position. As this is a “dress” watch there is no seconds hand – elegance is more important than knowing the exact time. It is signed BAUME & MERCIER GENEVE below the XII and BAUMATIC above the VI. It is further signed SWISS MADE at the base of the dial. The original solid glass crystal is in mint condition. The two-piece case is in excellent condition, crafted of 18 Karat Solid Yellow Gold and weighing 22.5 grams (4/5 of an ounce). It has a few small scratches upon

inspection with my loupe but I did not want to polish this case as it never has been and looks very nice as it is. The original winding crown features a cabochon sapphire tip that has a great COBALT blue color. It is in excellent condition, winding and setting smoothly.Turning the watch over I see that the 18k solid yellow gold back lid still retains the brushed, satin finish that was applied at the factory. Again, I have not made any attempts at polishing and it is in excellent order. Case numbers are 743267 – 37072. This case back is held in place by four screws, one at each corner. Unscrewing these four and removing the lid reveals a clean, gold finished mechanism with micro rotor. It is signed BAUME & MERICER – BM 12820 – 30 JEWELS, SWISS . The inside of the case back is signed BAUME & MERICER GENEVE – 0.750 with further gold hallmarks including the 18k gold Goddess Minerva stamp and the case reference number 159. This case number is also stamped on the underside of the bezel, as shown. This fine original timepiece has been routinely serviced since purchased and it winds and sets smoothly while keeping very good time. It is fitted on a new 18mm black deBeer Paris leather strap with gold finished buckle. Note, no box or papers come with this watch but I can guarantee this to be 100% original and as described – please see my eBay rating, all as a watch seller on eBay since 1998. Prior to WWII, Gruen was better known in the USA than Rolex, which at that time was concentrating on the British and Commonwealth countries (hence lots of early Rolexes coming out of Australia and the UK). Hans Wilsdorf and Gruen were friends and neighbors in Switzerland (their factories were just yards away), and even agreed to market their watches as Rolex Gruen in Europe, but the Great Depression and more urgent matters prevented this.I am pleased to offer for sale the following vintage

ladies timepiece from the Gruen firm, a Guild series Cartouche model in excellent condition that dates to ca 1927. This watch is 14kt White Gold (Reinforced with Metal), as stamped inside, a superior example of a 14k White Gold filled case.Triple-signed, it measures 30mm lug tip to lug tip and 17mm in width (20.3mm with original cabochon sapphire crown). This works out to be over 1-3/16 inches long by 5/8 of an inch wide, not counting the winding crown. With bracelet it measures a total length of 7-3/4 inches, a length I can shorten (or lengthen) for the winner at no charge. It has been fully serviced by my skilled watchmaker David and its original 15 jewel, 4 adjustment Gruen Guild, 153 caliber, manual wind mechanism winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. The silver, enamel finished dial is in mint condition – professionally restored to its correct original status and beautifully done. It features black enamel painted Art Nouveau style numerals, original blue steel Spade-style hands and a 60 minute inner track. Signed GRUEN below the 12.The glass crystal is in excellent, clear condition. The 14 Karat White Gold Filled engraved case (stamped: 14kt Gold reinforced with metal) is in excellent condition. The highlight has to be its inlaid black enameling on all sides of the dial – in perfect shape. The original winding crown is of a style unique to Gruen (beaded) and features a cabochon sapphire tip. It is in pristine shape and operates smoothly. Turning the watch over I see that the back lid features a finely engraved floral border and is in excellent order. Inside I find a clean and higher-grade Fifteen Jewel Gruen Guild Series movement, a caliber 153. This movement is signed FIFTEEN 15 JEWELS – FOUR 4 ADJ., GRUEN GUILD –SWITZERLAND, 153. The inside of the case lid is stamped GRUEN – 14K GOLD REINFORCED WITH METAL – WADSWORTH, 153 / 57 with case number below. The 153 is the mechanism grade/caliber and 57 is the dial series number. Now to discuss the “reinforced with metal” stamp on this case. To quote an original Gruen pamphlet “The Gruen Reinforced Case is a 14kt. Gold-filled case, reinforced with extra gold where there is the greatest wear – in reality two cases, one gold and one alloy, fitted together. Thus stiffness or rigidity is given the outside, which is sufficiently heavy to permit fine, deep hand engraving and which fully resists all outside wear. It is therefore superior in gold value and in movement protection to

any gold-filled case – second only to a high grade, heavy, solid gold case.”. So now you know what these cases are all about and perhaps why this watch’s case is in such fantastic shape.This fully serviced Cartouche model winds and sets very smoothly while keeping very good time. This original example is in spotless original condition, 14kt Yellow Gold Filled and featuring a mint and untouched dial.Five times signed for Omega (dial, crystal, crown, case and mechanism), it measures 41mm lug tip to lug tip and 34.5mm in width (37mm with Omega-signed winding crown). This works out to be 1-5/8 inches long by just shy of 1/38 inches wide, not counting the Omega crown. It is powered by a high quality Omega 550 Caliber, 17 jewel self-winding mechanism, fully serviced by my watchmaker David just last week to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. The 100% original, finely brushed, silver enamel finished dial is in MINT condition, guaranteed untouched since it left the factory on this watch. It is further signed SWISS MADE T at the base of the dial, the “T” standing for the tritium in the hands.The original hardened acrylic armored crystal is in excellent, clear condition with no flaws. This crystal has a tiny Omega Symbol in the center – visible with a magnifying loupe but not with the naked eye. The hermetic case (with removable bezel) is 14 Karat Yellow Gold Filled and in pristine condition – I thought it was solid gold when I first saw it. It is stamped “14K GOLD FILLED” between the bottom lugs. The original Omega-signed gold finished winding crown is spotless as well, winding and setting smoothly.Turning the watch over I find that the back of the case is in excellent order with no wear or scratches, like new. This was a presentation piece and it is tastefully signed “To Charles Manmiller for Loyal Service Glidden Durkee 1970.” As this watch requires a professional to remove the bezel, crystal and then the stem/crown to access the mechanism I had my watchmaker David take the photos inside before closing her up after service. It was founded by Czech immigrant Joseph Bulova and based in New York City, where the famous Bulova Observatory was located, high above a skyscraper on Fifth Avenue. Like Gruen, it also had a factory in (Bienne) Switzerland, established in 1912 and dedicated to the production of watch components and their assembly into jeweled movements. By 1922, the name Bulova would begin to appear on watch dials across the country and the firm would be the first in the

industry in the total standardization of parts.If you are looking for an excellent Art Deco watch this is a very pretty choice, a lady's “PATRICIA” model from Bulova that dates to 1930. I can’t imagine any watch better representing the style of the 1920s and this one is truly nice condition.Triple-signed, its 14kt White Rolled Gold Plated case measures 30.5mm end to end and 17mm in width (21mm with original cabochon sapphire crown). In inches this works out to be 1-3/16” long by 5/8” wide, not counting the winding crown and it is fitted on a vintage cord band that makes the overall length 7-1/2 inches (I can make this longer or shorter for the winner). It has been fully serviced by my Bulova-trained watchmaker David prior to auction and its original 15 jewel, manual wind mechanism winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.The sterling silver, enamel finished dial is in mint condition – the original that has been professionally restored to its exact original status. It features a 60 minute inner track border, black enameled Arabic style numerals and original blued steel Space-style needle tip hands. Note the finely engraved center dial – what detail! Signed BULOVA below the 12 and embossed “Swiss” at the base of the dial, below the bezel. The solid glass crystal is in flawless condition. The two-piece, hinged back Cut Corner design case is 14 Karat Rolled Gold Plated (“Bulova Quality”) and is a tour de force of Art Deco engraved designs on the bezel AND case sides. Case condition is excellent. The original cabochon sapphire winding crown is excellent as well, winding and setting smoothly.Turning the watch over I see that the back lid is finely engraved with a feather design border and is free of any personal engravings or scratches…very nice. Peeking inside via the hinged back lid I note that the movement is protected by its own crystal and bezel, a very useful feature of many 1920s Bulova watches (called the “Dust-Tite Protector”) that protected it from dust and debris. The movement is a Tonneau-shaped, manual wind model signed Bulova Watch Co., [Caliber] 6AF - Fifteen 15 Jewels - Swiss. There is also an Omega symbol, actually the firm’s date code for1930. The inside of the case lid is stamped BULOVA QUALITY – PAT. JUNE 10, 1924 with case number below. Bulova Quality cases were Rolled Gold Plated as opposed to being Gold Filled and all Bulova cases of this period were further plated (either chrome or rhodium) on the exterior to resist scratches and wear. This cleaned, oiled &

The Jaeger-LeCoultre Watch Co. of Switzerland was established in Le Sentier, Valee de Joux in 1833 by Antoine LeCoultre. After 170 years it is still one of the most important manufacturers of ebauches (raw movements), and has supplied mechanisms to almost all the notable producers of luxury watches, including Vacheron & Constantin and Patek Philippe. Merging with the Alsatian watch factory of Edmond Jaeger in 1925, the name “Jaeger LeCoultre” soon appeared on wrist watch dials. They are a “watch collectors” watch and rank as investment-grade timepieces.I am pleased to offer for sale the following vintage timepiece from the firm, a men’s Powermatic (wind indicator) model in 14kt Solid Yellow Gold that dates to ca 1956 - 1957. More specifically it is a Nautilus model, complete with original, untouched dial. I am not sure of the letter designation of this Nautilus model (i.e., “Nautilus S”, like James Dean wore) but if anyone does know I’ll add it to my listing.Triple signed for LeCoultre (dial, case and mechanism), it measures 42mm lug tip to lug tip and 35mm in width (37mm with partially recessed, original unmarked winding crown). This works out to be just over 1-5/8 inches long by 1-3/8 inches wide, not including the crown. My watchmaker David has fully serviced its original LeCoultre 481 caliber bumper automatic mechanism, ensuring it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.The 100% original silver, enamel finished dial is in excellent condition, guaranteed untouched since it left the factory. As you can hopefully see, it has a nice even patina of age and looks great on the wrist. It features applied gold hour markers and Breguet style numbers, gold metal Leaf-style hands and a ‘sweep’ original gold metal center seconds hand. Signed LeCoultre Automatic below the 12 and SWISS MADE below the 6. Below the 12 is the wind indicator window and it displays the reserve time up to 40 hours. Please note that the color of this rotating disk changes to RED when it gets down to 10 hours in time but I took the photos when it was at 30 hours of reserve. The gently domed acrylic crystal is in excellent condition, a new old stock addition. The LeCoultre-signed case is in excellent

order, a seldom seen 14 Karat Solid Yellow Gold with a nice “heft” to it and even nicer than my photos convey. Finding a solid 14k gold Powermatic is not easy, most were 10k gold filled. The winding crown, unmarked, is the correct vintage domed example and in excellent order, operating smoothly. Turning the watch over I see that the screw-down back lid is in excellent PLUS condition and stamped 14K GOLD. Absolutely no wear or engravings. Inside I find a high-grade Seventeen Jewel bumper automatic mechanism that rotates approximately 270 degrees back and forth like an Omega. It is signed LeCoultre Co. – Seventeen 17 Jewels, [Caliber] 481 – Swiss – VXN. The serial number is 1,258,762, dating it to ca 1956 or 1957. The inside case lid is stamped Cased & Timed in U.S.A. by LeCoultre – 14K Gold with case numbers below.This watch has been disassembled, cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. It is fitted on a new deBeer 18mm black ostrich (grain) calf leather hand crafted band with gold finished buckle. This works out to be just shy of 1-3/4 inches long by 1-3/8 inches wide, not counting the original crown. It is powered by its original 17 jewel, 280 caliber manual wind Longines mechanism, a high quality design made in-house by the firm. It features a 60 second outer chapter, applied silver hour markers, original silver metal Dauphine-style hands and original center ‘sweep seconds hand. It is further signed SWISS at the base of the dial.The original hardened acrylic crystal in excellent condition with no flaws. The case is a two-piece design that is solid stainless steel and it is in excellent to mint condition, absolutely spotless with elongated lugs. The matching steel winding crown is signed “LONGINES” with trademark below – something you rarely see (typically a signed Longines crown has just the trademark winged hourglass). <img src=http://www.nwlink.com/~holben/advertmovado.jpg> One of the best-known watch firms in the world today, the Movado Watch Co. of Switzerland took its name from the Esperanto word that translates as “Always in Motion.” Founded by Achille Ditesheim in 1881, he soon set up the first factory in La Chaux-de-Fonds, and the “Movado” name first appeared in 1906.One of the first (if not ‘the’ first) watch companies to produce a wristwatch for men, its most famous early design was the Polyplan, followed by military timepieces and triple date watches.I am pleased to offer for sale the following vintage men’s timepiece from the Movado factory, a Bumper Automatic model from ca 1954 that was also one of the first watches to have a quick-set date as well. To rapidly advance the date the wearer pushes “in” the button on the left side of the case – somewhat like triple date watches but I have never seen a Movado like this before. Also nice is its case, fabricated for Movado by the leading Swiss case maker Francois Borgel (FB). Triple-signed, its all stainless steel case measures 40mm lug tip to lug tip and 33mm in width (35.5mm with original, unmarked steel crown). This works out to be just shy of 1-5/8 inches long by just over 1-1/4 inches wide, not including the crown. It is powered by its original and higher-grade 17 jewel, 224A caliber bumper automatic Movado mechanism that has been fully serviced by my trusted watchmaker David to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.The “bumper” automatic design of self-winding mechanisms was a precursor to the “rotor” automatic. The bumper design has a rotor that swings in one direction until it hits a SPRING and it returns in the other direction (where there is another spring). The rotor design swings 360

degrees in both directions with NO springs to propel the rotor back and forth.The silver, matte enamel finish dial is in excellent overall condition – the original Movado metal dial that has been professionally restored in the recent past. It features an incised gold “dot” 60 second outer track, raised silver hour markers and numerals, date window at the 3 position (quickset via its “pusher” on the left side of the case), original silver steel Lance-style hands and original “sweep” darkened blue steel center seconds hand. Signed MOVADO below the 12 in raised lettering and AUTOMATIC above the 6. The hardened acrylic armored crystal is in excellent, clear condition, a new addition. The Movado-signed, Francois Borgel designed case is Solid Stainless Steel and in excellent PLUS condition, a two-piece example with nicely faceted lugs. The original stainless steel winding crown is a design unique to Movado during this period, unsigned and gently domed. It is in excellent order, winding and setting smoothly.Turning the watch over I see that screw-down stainless back lid is in excellent shape, stamped Stainless Steel. In the center it is engraved “Dennis Wilke 1-21-55” – suggesting that the watch was purchased within a few months prior to this date (ca 1954). Taking a look inside I find a bumper automatic mechanism that is stamped Movado Factories, 17 Seventeen Jewels, [Model?] 4861, Swiss Made, MXI with caliber number C224.A stamped below the balance wheel. The inside case back is finely engine turned and stamped FB PATENT + STAINLESS STEEL INAL - MOVADO FACTORIES SWITZERLAND, FABRICATION SUISSE with case numbers below. Please note the “FB” initials for Francois Borgel, the Swiss Patent + symbol and the Movado trademark of a hand holding a pocket watch. This quick setting date model Movado has been completely disassembled, cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. It is fitted on a new 16mm black deBeer Paris hand crafted lizard (grain) calf leather strap with chrome steel buckle, ready to be worn and enjoyed. This Waltham was produced when the firm was headquartered in Chicago, and it features a finely engraved Florentine bezel and 21 Jewel mechanism.Triple-signed, it measures 39mm lug tip to lug tip and 32.5mm in width (34mm with winding crown). This works out to be just over 1-1/2 inches long by1-1/4 inches wide, not including the crown. My trusted watchmaker David has fully serviced its original Waltham-signed, Twenty One jewel manual wind mechanism and it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. The ivory color, matte finished dial is in excellent condition, professionally restored to its correct status. It features raised silver hour markers, original silver steel Dauphine-style hands and a cross hair design seconds dial with ‘sweep’ original seconds hand. Signed WALTHAM 21 JEWELS below the 12 marker. The acrylic crystal is in excellent, clear condition. The two-piece Waltham-signed case is 14 Karat Solid White Gold and in excellent condition, complete with flared lugs and finely etched “Florentine” bezel. The matching and unmarked winding crown is in excellent order as well, winding and setting smoothly.Turning the watch over I note that the back lid is in excellent PLUS condition, absolutely no wear or engravings and stamped “14K GOLD” at one edge. I dated the watch to ca 1963 as the service paper included with the watch doesn’t show a zip code with the service center addresses but the Guarantee booklet does.
