Founded by Ernest Francillon and Auguste Agassiz in the year 1832, the Longines Watch Co. of Switzerland was established in the “Long Meadows” (translated: Longines) near the town of St. Imier. Winner of countless horology awards, their wristwatches are among the best in the world, on par with the “big boys” of the Swiss watch making profession including its chief rival Omega.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following vintage Longines timepiece, a men’s 14kt Solid Yellow Gold automatic wind model that dates to ca 1953. This fancy lug watch is in excellent PLUS condition and features a 22A caliber, mechanism – the FIRST self-winding movement made by Longines entirely “in house” when introduced in 1945. The 22A caliber features a subsidiary seconds dial (unusual for an automatic watch of this age) while the “22AS” caliber was used for watches with a center ‘sweep’ seconds hand.
Triple-signed, this timepiece measures 41mm lug tip to lug tip and 34mm in width (36mm with gold finished winding crown). This works out to be 1-5/8 inches long by just under 1-3/8 inches wide, not counting the crown. Its original 17 jewel, automatic wind Longines mechanism has been fully serviced by my trusted watchmaker David to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The silver, matte enamel finished dial is in flawless condition and has been professionally restored to its original status. It features applied 18kt solid gold Roman numerals and gold ‘dot’ hour markers, original gold metal hands and a less

commonly seen (for an automatic) sub-seconds dial with ‘sweep’ seconds hand. Note the “crosshair” design of the center dial – very crisp. It is stamped 14K GOLD along the edge and “AUTOMATIC” as well. Looking inside I find a clean and fully serviced Seventeen Jewel self-winding mechanism (18,000 bph / 36 hour power reserve, shock protected) signed Longines Automatic – Longines Watch Co., Swiss – Seventeen 17 Jewels, 22A with serial number #8,877,097. In its glory years from the 1920s through the 1940s, the Gruen Watch Company of USA & Switzerland was one of the leaders in wristwatch design and quality, even collaborating with Rolex (i.e., the Aegler movement duo-dial doctor’s watch) from its factories in Switzerland. Prior to WWII, Gruen was better known in the USA than Rolex, which at that time was concentrating on the British and Commonwealth countries (hence lots of early Rolexes coming out of Australia and the UK). Hans Wilsdorf and Gruen were friends and neighbors in Switzerland (their factories were just yards away), and even agreed to market their watches as Rolex Gruen in Europe, but the Great Depression (and more urgent matters) prevented this.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following vintage timepiece from the Gruen firm, a near mint (i.e., almost New Old Stock) men’s “Precision” model from the early 1960s, complete with its original display case and gold expansion band . This watch came out of a closed jewelry store in Pennsylvania. It is absolutely ORIGINAL and the only thing I’ve done is provide a new deBeer black lizard grain band so you can wear the new one while letting the original remain unworn.
This triple-signed timepiece measures 41mm end to end and 33.5mm in width (35mm with original, unmarked crown). This works out to be 1-5/8 inches long by 1-3/8 inches wide including the winding crown. My talented watchmaker David has fully serviced its original 17 jewel, manual wind 510 caliber mechanism to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The 100% original two-tone gold, enamel finished dial is in excellent condition – completely untouched since it left the factory. It almost has a “pie pan” look to it given the contrasting gold that runs below the raised gold hour markers. Other features include original gold Baton-style hands and a crosshair design sub-seconds dial with ‘sweep’ gold seconds hand. Signed GRUEN PRECISION below the 12 marker and SWISS at the base of the dial.
The original hardened acrylic crystal is in mint condition. The 10kt Yellow Rolled Gold Plated bezel (top section of case) is in pristine condition. The original winding crown, unmarked, is pristine as well, winding and setting as it should.
Turning the watch over I note that the back lid is in flawless shape, retaining its original brush finish just as it left the factory. It is stamped “GRUEN” and also “Base Metal Bezel- Stainless Steel Back.” Peeking inside I find a clean Seventeen Jewel movement that is signed Gruen Watch Co., Seventeen 17 Jewels – Swiss, Caliber 510 - GXC. The inside case back is signed STAINLESS STEEL BACK – GRUEN WATCH CO., SWITZERLAND - 510. Note how the mechanism caliber number is also

stamped on the inside case back.
This watch has been disassembled, cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. It comes fitted with a new 18mm black deBeer Europa lizard grain band but the winner also receives the original Speidel expansion band with 10k gold filled top links. This timepiece also comes with its original hinged baby blue display case, marked “GRUEN” on the outside and GRUEN – THE PRECISION WATCH on the inside. All in all a true TIME CAPSULE from the Kennedy years that looks even nicer in person – you won’t be disappointed.

Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers. My favorite United States watch firm has always been the Elgin National Watch Company, a prolific American firm established in 1864 on 35 acres of land donated by the City of Chicago in Elgin, Illinois. It was a strategic location, right next to the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad, one of the busiest railways into Chicago. By 1867 the first watch was marketed for sale, retailing for $115 (think of that in today’s prices!) and Elgin was soon competing head-on with its chief competitor, Waltham, which (ironically) was instrumental in forming Elgin, as two of the original organizers were P.S. Bartlett and D.G. Currier of Waltham fame.
Here is a truly beautiful example of a ladies engraved case Art Deco timepiece from the

Elgin firm, a 14kt White Gold filled hinged-back model that dates to 1927. This is one of the larger (if not largest) ladies Elgin models from the era and it shares the same 6/0 size mechanism as many men’s Elgin watches of the same period.
It measures 31mm end to end and 26.5mm in width (29mm with original crown). This works out to be just shy of 1-1/4 inches long by just over 1-1/8 inches wide, including the crown. It is powered by its original USA made, manual wind mechanism that has been fully serviced by my expert watchmaker David to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The silver, matte enamel finished dial is in mint condition – professionally restored to its original status. It features a checkered 60 minute outer track border, enameled numerals, original blued steel Fuseaux style hands and a separate, recessed seconds dial with 60 second outer chapter and ‘sweep’ original blue steel mini Fuseaux style hand. Signed ELGIN below the 12.
The solid glass crystal is in mint condition, removed in some photos to avoid glare. The case is a Tour-de-Force of embossed Art Deco detailing on the top and also along the case sides. It is a three-piece, double-hinged case crafted of 14 Karat White Gold Fill and is in excellent PLUS condition. The original white gold finished winding crown in excellent shape, operating smoothly.
Turning the watch over I note that the back lid is free of any engravings or wear and is in excellent PLUS condition, complete with finely engraved border. Peeking inside I find a clean Seven Jewel (Grade 430, 6/0 Size) movement, signed Elgin, U.S.A. with serial number #30,537,801, dating this watch to 1927. The inside of the case lid is stamped 6/0 - Keystone Watch Case Co. – J. Boss, 14K Gold Filled.
Fully serviced just last week, this timepiece winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. I have fitted it with a new 12mm matte black calf leather Swiss made band with fold-over ends and matching color buckle, especially designed for wire lug watches. This watch will fit a wrist 5-1/2 to 7 inches in size but if you need longer let me know! It could be argued that the Illinois Watch Co. of Springfield, Illinois (1870 – 1933) is the most coveted American watch brand amongst collectors today. Illinois produced pocket and wristwatches that truly exemplified the feeling and look of the early 20th century, clearly in tune with the style and mood of the era. A higher-end watch in its day, its quality is unsurpassed, with all mechanisms being higher, if not high grade.
The Illinois firm was sold to the equally famous Hamilton Watch Co. of Lancaster, PA in 1929 – only to succumb to the Great Depression shortly thereafter, as Hamilton could not afford to keep both factories operating. In January of 1933 the Illinois watch factory would forever close its doors. Given that the firm only made wristwatches for a very brief time (and better than most any other firm), their rarity and value is markedly increased.
While some Art Deco watch collectors trip over each other trying to win the nicer men’s Illinois models on eBay, they often overlook the lady’s models as (for now anyway) as most Illinois collectors are men. This makes the “named” (triple-signed) Lady’s models a very good deal but this is steadily changing, helped along by Fred Friedberg’s recent book on Illinois wristwatches.
I am pleased to offer for sale a very beautiful example of a lady’s 1931 FAIRPORT model timepiece from the Illinois firm, a 14kt White Gold filled engraved model with an equally fancy original engraved winding crown. This watch is in pristine shape inside and out and was cased at the Springfield factory as “Model #200.”
Fully signed, it measures 29mm end to end and 17.5mm in width (20mm with decoratively engraved winding crown). This converts (in inches) to just over 1-1/8” long by 5/8" wide without the crown. It is powered by its original and high-grade 17 jewel manual wind movement that has been fully serviced by my trusted watchmaker David to ensure it winds and sets very smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The enamel finished dial is in excellent condition, professionally restored to its original status. It features a checkered 60 minute outer track border, black enamel painted numerals and original blued steel Spade-style hands. Signed ILLINOIS below the 12.
The solid glass crystal is in mint condition and without any flaws. The three-piece, cut corner design case is 14 Karat White Gold Filled and in excellent to mint condition – truly spotless and like new. Note the finely engraved bezel and body on this model, very Art

Deco. The original fancily engraved winding crown is even nicer than most sapphire examples and in flawless shape, winding and setting as it should.
Turning the watch over I note that the back lid is free of any wear or engravings and in spotless condition. Inside I find a nicely finished and high-grade Seventeen Jewel, manual wind movement signed ILLINOIS – 17 JEWELS [GRADE] 807A with serial number #5,478,346 dating this watch to 1931. The inside of the original case lid is signed MODEL #200 – KEYSTONE WATCH CASE – CO., J. BOSS, 14K GOLD FILLED – 54721.
This fully cleaned, oiled and regulated watch winds and sets smoothly while keeping very good, accurate time. It comes fitted on a vintage Art Deco period black cord bracelet strap with matching white clasp and fittings that is a good (7-1/4 inches) size to fit your wrist. I can also custom size it for you - just tell me your wrist measurement if you’re the winner. Overall this is an extremely beautiful example of a high-grade AMERICAN made lady’s watch. There are nice vintage Curvex watches and then there are stunning vintage Curvex watches. This CHANCELLOR model from ca 1948 falls into the latter category I believe, crafted of 14kt Solid White Gold and featuring a black enamel dial set with genuine diamond markers. Did you notice the “grasshopper” lugs? It simply doesn’t get any finer!
In its glory years from the

1920s through the 1940s, the Gruen Watch Company of USA & Switzerland was one of the leaders in wristwatch design and quality, even collaborating with Rolex (i.e., the Aegler movement duo-dial doctor’s watch) from its factories in Switzerland.
This late 1940s Caliber 440 “Chancellor” model Gruen Curvex is pure beauty, its curved 14k Solid White Gold case complete with fanciful “grasshopper” lugs. This was a hard watch to photograph and I can assure you that it looks NICER in person – a nice white gold timepiece. The Chancellor was part of a series that included the Governor, Sovereign and Executive.
This is a triple-signed Gruen and both the case and the movement are CURVED, measuring 39mm end to end and 23mm in width (24.5mm with crown). In inches this works out to be just over 1-1/2” long by 1” wide, including the winding crown. My trusted watchmaker David has fully serviced its original 17 jewel Curvex 440 caliber Precision mechanism to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The black enamel finished dial is in excellent condition, professionally restored to its correct original status. It features applied 18k Solid Gold hour indicators, genuine DIAMONDS at the 12, 3 and 9 positions, original silver hands and a sub-seconds dial with detailed outer chapter and sweep original seconds hand. Signed GRUEN CURVEX below the 12 and PRECISION above the seconds dial. It is further signed SWITZERLAND at the base of the dial.
The peaked (at the center) solid glass crystal is in excellent condition, possibly the original. The 14 Karat Solid White Gold case is double-signed Gruen, complete with fanciful “grasshopper” lugs and in excellent PLUS shape, I didn’t even polish this one as it retains the crispness and detail of when it left the factory over 60 years ago. The white gold-finished crown is a later replacement in excellent shape, operating smoothly.
Turning the watch over I see that the back lid is in excellent PLUS condition and retains its original brushed finish just as it left the Gruen factory. It is stamped GRUEN and carries the reference number K09450. Peeking inside I find a barrel-shaped Curved movement, signed Gruen Watch Co. – Seventeen 17 Jewels – Curvex Precision Pat. – Switzerland, GXC - [Caliber] 440. The inside of the case is signed Cased and Timed in USA by Gruen Watch Co., 14K GOLD – L - 440 - 568. Note that the #440 caliber is stamped on the inner lid along with the dial model (#568)

as well. Note how the interior lining of this case is yellow gold – almost a two-tone watch in some ways. The case maker was the Arnold Lemieux, the “L” being his trademark.
This handsome Curvex Chancellor watch has been cleaned, oiled & regulated so it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. It comes fitted with a new and high quality 16mm black deBeer handcrafted lizard grain strap with matching color buckle, ready to be worn and enjoyed. As I’ve said many times before, owning a nice Gruen Curvex means you’re going to watch it goup in value while you enjoy owning and wearing it. I’ve long been a fan of vintage Bulova watches, especially its Art Deco models from the 1920s and early 1930s. The firm was founded by Czech immigrant Joseph Bulova and based in New York City, where the famous Bulova Observatory was located, high above a skyscraper on Fifth Avenue. Like Gruen, it also had a factory in (Bienne) Switzerland, established in 1912 and dedicated to the production of watch components and their assembly into jeweled movements. The firm is known for its aggressive advertising campaigns and for being the first to advertise on radio – with an announcer stating “B – U – L – O – V – A … 8:00p.m., Bulova Watch Time.”
If you’ve had a chance to view previous auctions of mine you’ll know

that I love the women’s 1920s Bulova models, the finer the condition the better. Well here is one that will have you whistling a happy tune as soon as you strap her on…a 1928 hinged-back model crafted of 14kt Solid White Gold and featuring 8 Baguette Sapphires set into its finely engraved case.
This triple-signed model measures 26mm end to end and 15mm in width (17mm with original engraved “flower” crown). In inches this works out to be just over 1” long by 5/8” wide (without the winding crown) and it is attached to a black cord bracelet that makes the overall length 7-1/4 inches (I can also make it shorter or longer – just tell me the length you need). It has been fully serviced by my Bulova-trained watchmaker David and its high quality 15 Jewel mechanism winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The sterling silver, enamel finished, engraved dial is in mint condition – the original that has been professionally restored to its original status. It features black enamel painted Arabic numerals, a checkered 60 minute inner track border, finely engraved center dial and original blued steel Spade-tip hands. Signed BULOVA below the 12 and embossed SWISS at the base, below the bezel.
The solid glass crystal is the original and in great condition. The 14 Karat Solid White Gold case is in excellent condition, a tour de force of Art Deco chased and engraved detailing, complemented by eight baguette sapphires at the corners - all in excellent condition. The original flower engraved winding crown is wonderfully detailed and in great shape, winding and setting smoothly.
Turning the watch over I see that the engraved border back lid is in excellent PLUS condition with no wear or engravings – like it left the factory just a few weeks ago. Taking a peek inside via the secure hinged back case (opens and closes perfectly), I find a topnotch Fifteen Jewel, manual wind movement signed Bulova Watch Co., SWISS, [Caliber] 5AP – Fifteen 15 Jewels . The date code stamp (a crescent moon) tells me it was made in 1928. The inside of the case lid is signed PAT. JUNE 10, 1924 - 14K with case reference number below. If you collect Bulova watches at all you will recognize this patent date as a Bulova case patent date.
This fully serviced Art Deco delight winds and sets very smoothly while keeping accurate time. It is fitted on a vintage old stock black cord strap that makes the overall length 7-1/4 inches but I can make this ANY SIZE you want by shortening it or even adding longer cord – just let me know if you’re the winner and I’ll have it done at no charge before mailing. Overall a stellar example of an entirely original Sapphire case Bulova timepiece…look up “Stunning Art Deco watch” in the dictionary and you’ll see a picture of this wonderful timepiece.

Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers. One of the best-known watch firms in the world today, the Movado Watch Co. of Switzerland took its name from the Esperanto word that translates as “Always in Motion.” Founded by Achille Ditesheim in 1881, he soon set up the first factory in La Chaux-de-Fonds, and the “Movado” name first appeared in 1906.
This is a seldom seen early 1960s RALCO model from Movado, a name first introduced in 1909 with a factory established n La Chaux-de-Fonds. The initials "RAL" represent the first names of the Ditesheim family children. Ralco watches are well-documented in Van Osterhausen's 234 page book "The Movado History" if you are interested in learning more.
This original timepiece is a “Ralco-Matic” calendar model, no doubt intended to compete with the Eterna-Matic, Omega and Longines self-winding models of the era. It measures 39mm lug tip to lug tip and 33mm in width (35mm with original, unmarked crown). This works out to be just over 1-1/2 inches long by just over 1-1/4 inches wide, not including the crown. It is powered by its original 17 jewel rotor automatic (self-winding) mechanism that has been fully serviced by my watchmaker David to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The 100% original silver, satin finish dial is in pristine condition – untouched since it left the factory in Switzerland. and calendar above the 6 marker. It is further signed SWISS at the base.
The hardened acrylic crystal is in excellent, clear condition. The two-piece case is comprised of a chrome finished bezel and stainless steel back lid. It is in excellent overall condition with just a touch of rub to a couple lug tips. The original winding crown (correctly unmarked) is excellent as well, winding and setting as it should.
Turning the watch over I see that the stainless steel back lid is a screw-down example in excellent condition, tastefully monogrammed P.B. as shown. It is signed “Swiss Made – Automatic - Shock Protected – Waterproof – Antimagnetic – Stainless Steel Back.” Inside I discover a clean Seventeen Jewel rotor automatic movement that is signed 17 JEWELS - SWISS and also ETA 2472 below the balance wheel. This is a robust mechanism caliber with a 42 hour power reserve and f = 18000 A/h. The inside case lid is stamped 3-3560, as shown.
This watch has been completely disassembled, cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds & sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. The date is a semi-quickset, meaning to advance the calendar an entire day without moving the hands 24 hours you can simply pass midnight once then go back to before 9pm and then forward past midnight to advance an entire day. Hans Wilsdorf and Gruen were friends and neighbors in Switzerland (their factories were just yards away), and even agreed to market their watches as Rolex Gruen in Europe, but the Great Depression and more urgent matters prevented this.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following vintage timepiece from the Gruen firm, a ladies Cartouche Model 5 from ca 1927. This 14kt White Gold Filled model is notable for its finely inset “checkered” panels that border the dial, filled in with black enameling for a very Art Deco look.
Triple-signed, it measures 28mm end to end and 15.5mm in width (19mm with original sapphire tip winding crown). In inches this works out to be 1-1/8” long by 5/8” wide, not including the cabochon sapphire crown and it is fitted on a Swiss leather strap that will fit a wrist 5-1/2 to 6-3/4 inches in size. It is powered by its original and high grade 833 caliber Gruen mechanism (identical to the Rolex 250 caliber) that has been fully serviced by my watchmaker David to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The silver, enamel finished dial is in mint condition, professionally restored to its original status and without flaw. It features a 60 minute checkered inner track border, black enamel numerals and original blue steel Spade-style hands. Signed GRUEN below the 12 and embossed “Switzerland” at the base of the dial, below the bezel.
The solid glass crystal is in flawless condition. The checkered enamel bezel case is stamped “Gruen – Reinforced Gold” and this translates as a 14 karat white gold filled case. The case is in excellent overall condition and features finely engraved banding along the case sides. The cabochon sapphire winding crown is in excellent shape and operates smoothly for setting and winding.
Turning the watch over I see that the back lid features a floral engraved border with flowers at each corner, in excellent condition. Inside I find a clean and high-grade Fifteen Jewel Gruen Guild Series movement, a caliber 833 that is identical to the Rolex caliber 250 as the Aegler Watch Factories made this movement for both companies. It is signed GRUEN GUILD SWISS – FIFTEEN 15 JEWELS, FOUR 4 ADJ. with the caliber number 833 and “SUISSE” stamped below the balance wheel.. The inside of the case lid is stamped GRUEN – REINFORCED GOLD – 833 8.

Note how the caliber number of 833 is repeated on the case back while the number 8 is the dial series number.
This fully serviced Gruen Guild Cartouche watch winds and sets very smoothly while keeping accurate time. It is fitted on a new Swiss made 12mm matte black leather strap especially designed for solid wire lug watches such as this. It will fit a wrist anywhere from 5-1/5 inches to just over 6-3/4 inches and if you have a larger wrist let me know as I should be able to do something else that is longer. All in all a beautiful example of a Cartouche Model No. 5 – all it needs now is an appreciative wrist!

One of the first (if not the very first) watch companies to produce a wristwatch for men, its most famous early design was the Polyplan, followed by military timepieces and triple date watches. Prices continue to rise for the early pieces, thus making them a good investment.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following vintage men’s timepiece from Movado, a very nice WWII era military dial model

Page 25: holben/Descriptions/August 1, 2011.d… · Web viewThis watch came out of a closed jewelry ... (open-ended / wire lug and ... the Movado Watch Co. of Switzerland

that dates to ca 1940 – 1942. I’ve always been fond of this particular case design with its distinctive lugs (made by none other than Francis Borgel) and it is a model that sold very well for Tiffany & Co. as one of its private label watches.
This solid stainless steel watch measures 41mm lug tip to lug tip and 31mm in width (33mm with original crown). This works out to be 1-5/8 inches long by just shy of 1-1/4 inches wide (without the crown) – slightly larger than similar Movado models I’ve had. It is powered by its original 15 jewel “Movado Factories” signed mechanism that’s been fully serviced to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The two-tone silver, matte and satin enamel finished dial is in excellent condition – professionally restored to its original status. It features a 60 second outer track that is calibrated to 1/5 of a Second for Precision, enamel painted Arabic numbers, original blue steel leaf style hands and a ‘sweep’ original blue steel center seconds hand. Signed MOVADO below the 12 and NON MAGNETIC above the 6.
The new old stock domed acrylic crystal is excellent condition. The all-stainless two-piece case (with dust cover) is in excellent condition, complete with fancy lugs. It was designed and fabricated by Switzerland’s most regarded case maker – Francois Borgel (est. 1887) – a name that seasoned collectors are familiar with given he was the first to attempt to make a water and dust resistant, hermetic case. It is stamped #0152660 between the bottom lugs. The original steel winding crown is in excellent shape, operating smoothly.
Turning the watch over I note that the stainless back lid is a 10 sided, screw-down design in great to excellent condition (a minor bit of wear) and it is signed in small lettering “MOVADO FACTORIES SWITZERLAND.” Peeking inside I see that there is an Inner Dust Cover Lid, a high-quality detail found on only better quality military timepieces. Removing this I find a Fifteen Jewel movement that is signed Movado Factories – 15 Fifteen Jewels – Swiss Made - MXI. The caliber number 150MN is located below the balance wheel. The inside of the outer case lid is fully hallmarked with the Movado trademark (hand holding pocket watch), including FB – PATENT + STAINLESS STEEL INAL – MOVADO FACTORIES, SWITZERLAND - 11630 - 0152660. The “FB” stands for Francois Borgel and the KEY symbol is for Geneva. Note also that the inside case lid number matches what’s found between the bottom lugs, as earlier shown.
This cleaned, oiled & regulated watch winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. It is fitted on a new 16mm black leather strap with stainless steel buckle, or a military canvas style if you prefer. All in all a clean, ready to wear timepiece from one of Switzerland’s best – thanks for dropping by!

Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers. This is one of the scarcest (if not the scarcest) Longines watch models I have ever offered for sale and one of the very first Tank style dress watches they produced. Set within a sterling silver, hinged, back, wire lug case, this fully signed timepiece dates to 1913 and is a sight to behold on the wrist.
Founded by Ernest Francillon and Auguste Agassiz in the year 1832, the Longines Watch Co. of Switzerland was established in the “Long Meadows” near the town of St. Imier. Winner of countless horology awards, their wristwatches are among the best in the world, on par with the best of the Swiss watch making profession and one of my favorite brands to collect.
I am pleased to offer for sale a watch from my personal collection, an original “Banana Tonneau” men’s sterling silver model that dates to 1913 – a good 10 years before any American watch company was making dress form watches for men. Yes, the dial was restored about 10 years ago but this watch has ALL the serial numbers matching. This means that the serial number of 2,936,173 on the mechanism is also stamped on the case and even on the back of the dial, as I’ve shown.
Triple-signed for Longines, it measures 50.5mm lug tip to lug tip and 26mm in width (28mm with original crown). This works out to be 2 inches long by just over 1 inch in width – a very large watch. Powering this timepiece is its original 15 jewel, manual wind mechanism, a 10.85N Grade that has been routinely serviced and it keeps accurate time.
The original eggshell white, matte enamel finished dial has been professionally restored to its original status about 10 years ago and is in great condition. Note that the mechanism serial number is stamped on the underside – remarkable yet also your guarantee that this is not a “put together” watch. There is one small area between the 1 and 2 where you can see the imprint of where the dial leg is below but otherwise the dial is excellent. It features “Exploding” or

Page 28: holben/Descriptions/August 1, 2011.d… · Web viewThis watch came out of a closed jewelry ... (open-ended / wire lug and ... the Movado Watch Co. of Switzerland

exaggerated style black enamel numerals, a 60 minute inner track border and original Breguet-style blue steel “moon tip” hands. Signed LONGINES below the 12.
The curved acrylic (plastic) crystal is in excellent overall condition with a few small scratches. The two-piece, hinged back sterling silver case is a tonneau form “Banana” design in excellent condition, complete with U-shaped wire lug s with threaded end pieces. This Longines-signed case (with identical serial number to the mechanism) measures two inches from lug tip to lug tip - very impressive. The antique silver steel winding crown is in excellent order but will ‘click’ every few turns when winding up, something that it has always done since I’ve owned it but does not affect its functioning in any way.
Turning the watch over, I note that the sterling back lid is in excellent condition with no wear or engravings – just a normal patina of age. Inside I find a clean, gold-finished mechanism with red ruby jewels that is signed 2,936,173 –LONGINES with caliber number 10.85N stamped below the balance wheel. The serial number dates the watch to 1913 as per published production dates. The inside of the back lid is stamped with the Swiss Bern "Bear" silver hallmark, 0.935 (for the highest grade of sterling silver) and, most importantly, the mechanism serial number of 2,936,173. This ensures that the watch belongs together as you see it and is triple-signed. If you add the serial number on the dial you could say this watch is quadruple-signed.
This timepiece has been routinely serviced while I have owned it – most recently about 1 year ago. It sets smoothly and keeps accurate time but does ‘click’ every few turns when wound up - something that it has always done since I have had it. This does not affect the working condition of the watch in any way but is pointed out for accuracy – this and the bump on the dial from the dial foot are the only things I would note as being less than perfect on the watch.
It is fitted on a 12mm deBeer Paris genuine Crocodile dark brown strap with white metal buckle. This fits my wrist but if you have a wrist larger than 7 inches you will need a longer strap. All in all a truly rarer than hens’ teeth watch that has survived the past 98 years quite well I would say.

Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers. even think he knows my name!

If you like the look of a classic cocktail watch the following 18kt Solid Yellow Gold timepiece may be a great choice. Dating to the mid 1960s, it was made in Switzerland for Nicolson & Ryan Jewelers of Augusta, Maine – established in 1933 and still in business today. The watch is all original, only the cord (vintage at that) is new!
The measurements of the watch are 27mm lug tip to lug tip and 16mm in width (18mm with winding crown). In inches this is just shy of 1-1/8” by 5/8” wide, not including the crown. With band it measures a total length of 7-3/8 inches and I can custom size it smaller or larger for the winner at no charge. My talented watchmaker has fully serviced its original and high-grade (look at the photo below!) 17 jewel mechanism, ensuring it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The original ivory color, enamel finished dial is in great condition – just a few specks of age fitting for a watch close to half a century old. It features applied white gold hour markers and numerals and gold Baton-style hands. Signed Nicolson & Ryan below the 12 and Swiss at the base of the dial.
The original faceted edge crystal is in excellent shape – the faceting adding a bit of “sparkle” to the look. The two-piece case is 18 Karat Solid Yellow Gold and in excellent PLUS condition – complete with incised lugs. It is hallmarked on the lower right side below the winding crown for 18k and also on the inside back lid. The original yellow gold winding crown is in excellent order as well, winding and setting smoothly.
Turning the watch over I see that the back lid is solid 18kt yellow gold and in excellent shape – stamped with

serial number A56607. Peeking inside I find a clean and high-grade gold-finished mechanism that is marked Seventeen 17 Jewels – ISO Inc., Swiss. The inside case lid is stamped ISO INC. – SWISS – 18K, 0.750 with additional Swiss gold hallmarks including the Goddess Minerva.
This evening watch has been disassembled, cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. It comes fitted on a black cord bracelet strap that measures 7-3/8” in maximum wearable length. I can custom size this for the winner at no charge – just let me know before I mail it. Thanks for dropping by and I hope you consider placing a bid on this Nicolson & Ryan 18kt gold watch!

Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers.
