Westland High School embraces each student’s unique needs and potential and provides a support system. International students have additional support networks.

WHANAU:Each student is allocated to a hapū group. Each hapū is divided into whānau groups (form classes) that are made up of students from years 7 to 13. The whānau groups meet each morning for registration and information sharing. The whānau teacher provides the first pastoral care level, with career guidance, goal setting and general welfare. The Hapū are named in English and Māori and have primary colours used on special occasions e.g. sports day

Westland High School offers an extensive range of subjects.

We are also a member of the Toki Pounamu cluster of West Coast schools embracing digital learning. This provides a seamless transition from primary school where our students are also engaged in Learn, Create, Share pedagogy that has proven to lift student achievement. At Westland High School students will be required to use their own Chromebooks for learning in most classes.

More information on Junior School (Years 7 and 8) and Middle School (Years 9 and 10) will be available on the school website.

Senior School - Years 11 - 13National Certificate in Educational Achievement (NCEA) qualifications are available.Each subject offers up to 4 hours of class time. There are three levels in the senior school. Students may take a multi-level course.Where there are low numbers the course may be offered by distance learning (*)

OUTDOOR EDUCATION

The local environment is unrivalled for quick quality access to beaches, lakes, rivers, rainforest and mountains. The proximity between the school and the outdoors enables quick access to many outdoor venues and means we can offer plenty of practical activities with minimal travel and disruption to the school schedule.

Westland High School offers unique opportunities for outdoor education. Programmes include Teamwork, Leadership Skills and extending through your comfort zone through Rock climbing, Kayaking, Tramping, Abseiling, Navigation and Snow caving

The course structure is Each week: 2 one hour theory lessons and 1 outdoor practical session of 2.6 hours

Senior students also have up to 10 longer trips (kayaking, mountain expeditions, snow caving, rock climbing, hiking/ tramping) of 1 – 2 days duration spread over the year. NCEA Level 2 and 3 qualifications are available.

Middle School camps (3) where some senior students take a leadership role.

STAFF: The outdoor mecca of Westland has attracted staff who are passionate about the outdoors and what it can offer. Our outdoor education staff are all active in outdoor pursuits and have the qualifications and enthusiasm to run safe, modern and enjoyable programmes.

INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMME

Westland High School is a signatory to the Education (Pastoral Care of International Students) Code of Practice 2016 (the Code) established under section 238F of the Education Act 1989.

We welcome students from a variety of countries - from Japan to Germany. We have short stay group visits (10 -20 days) and long stay individual programmes (3 months - 2 years.)

International students especially enjoy a uniquely New Zealand experience, including Being home-hosted.Experiencing school life as a Kiwi student would.Being part of a small international programme. Our range of academic courses and the very special outdoor education class.Some of our German students prepare for New Zealand’s University Entrance and NCEA 3 qualifications which entitles them to enter university in Germany.

We encourage our students to have an international experience too. In 2019 an exchange to Japan is mooted.

OUR DRESS CODEWestland High School has a uniform for all students with informal and formal options to cater for different occasions and seasons.There are no seasonal restrictions on the wearing of the summer and winter uniforms. Our focus is for the students to wear their uniform with pride and that the uniform be flexible, practical and affordable.

The appearance of students is expected to be a credit to the school at all times. Hair must be clean and tidy, and kept clear of the face. For health and safety reasons hair may be required to be tied back, appropriate footwear worn, and jewellery restrictions applied. Hair ties, any colour, and discreet ornaments may be worn.
