Everything from a particular genre of books to clothing styles to social media seem to have their rise and fall within a frame of time. For instance, several years ago there was a trend in television in which instead of a typical show about police detectives, you would have someone who assisted law enforcement in cracking the case: The Mentalist, Psych, Castle, Perception, and Numbers are just some of the programs that would use characters who played psychic mediums, college professors, and authors, and would advise the police in apprehending the bad guy. Our culture is big on trends, but sometimes you find something that stands the test of time. Unlike the TV shows I mentioned (which were all eventually cancelled), some creative works continue to draw audiences such as a classical performance of Mussorgskys Pictures at an Exhibition or tuning in to a classic rock station to hear Led Zeppelins Going to California or a classic country station for Tom T. Halls Thats How I Got to Memphis. When we consider the Christian religion, some would say it dates to the atoning sacrifice of Jesus on the cross at around 30 A.D. I would argue that event merely signaled a new covenant and that our relationship with God predates Abraham at more than 4,000 years. In short, our religion has stood the test of time. Other world religions are also ancient: Islam traces its roots to Abraham, but can only trace its origin as a religion to Muhammed in early 7 th century Mecca. Compared to our roots as the people of God, Islam is just a Johnny- come-lately. In last Sunday mornings message I used the following excerpt from Ephesians: 14 Then we will no longer be immature like children. We wont be tossed and blown about by every wind of new teaching. We will not be influenced when people try to trick us with lies so clever they sound like the truth. 15 Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church. 16 He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love. Ephesians 4:14-16 NLT This speaks to the church as having Christ as its head, relying on the gifts of each part of the body, and withstanding the trends of culture and society to cling to what is true and right. While we cannot change the culture in which we find ourselves, we can still be the people of God. Keep the faith, Greg

Standing the Test of Time

For as long as I can remember I have been fascinated by the nature of trends. Unlike the TV shows I mentioned (which were all eventually cancelled), some creative works continue to draw audiences such as a classical performance of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition or tuning in to a classic rock station to hear Led Zeppelin’s Going to California or a classic country station for Tom T. Hall’s That’s How I Got to Memphis. When we consider the Christian religion, some would say it dates to the atoning sacrifice of Jesus on the cross at around 30 A.D.
