Fundamentals of Psychology; Research MethodsFor researchers, teachers, and students concerned with current research synthesis techniques.

This third collection of “Hotspots in Psychology” presents state-of-the-art meta-analytic research in psychology. It features the first sys-tematic literature review of the empirical evidence regarding stability and change of values in adults, as well as meta-analyses examining the effects of descriptive and injunctive norms on consumer decision making, how ethical leadership shapes organizational citizenship behavior, and whether interparental relationship quality differs between parents of children with or without ADHD.

Methodological contributions include a systematic review of ques-tionable research practices, an exploration of the role of researchers’ analytic flexibility when meta-analyzing data using specification-curve analysis and multiverse analysis, as well as a new approach to improving the quality of inferences drawn from funnel plots.

Cutting-edge meta-analyses and research methodology in psychology

About 40% of the population experiences difficulty falling or staying asleep at some time in a given year, while 10% of people suffer chron-ic insomnia. This concise reference written by leading experts for busy clinicians provides practical and up-to-date advice on current approaches to assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of insomnia. Professionals and students learn to correctly identify and diagnose insomnia and gain hands-on information on how to carry out treat-

ment with the best evidence base: cognitive behavioral therapy for in-somnia (CBT-I). The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) and the American College of Physicians (ACP) both recognize CBT-I as the first-line treatment approach to insomnia. Appendices include useful resources for the assessment and treatment of insomnia, which readers can copy and use in their clinical practice.

This manual presents an evidence-based focal psychodynamic ap-proach for the outpatient treatment of adults with anorexia nervosa, which has been shown to produce lasting changes for patients.

The reader first gains a thorough understanding of the general models and theories of anorexia nervosa. The book then describes in detail a three-phase treatment using focal psychodynamic psychotherapy. It provides extensive hands-on tips, including precise assessment of psychodynamic themes and structures using the Operationalized Psychodynamic Diagnosis (OPD) system, real-life case studies, and clinical pearls. Clinicians also learn how to identify and treat typical

ego structural deficits in the areas of affect experience and differen-tiation, impulse control, self-worth regulation, and body perception. Detailed case vignettes provide deepened insight into the therapeutic process. A final chapter explores the extensive empirical studies on which this manual is based, in particular the renowned multicenter ANTOP study. Printable tools in the appendices can be used in daily practice.

This book is of interest to clinical psychologists, psychotherapists, psychiatrists, counselors, and students.

Fundamentals of Psychology; Research MethodsFor researchers, teachers, and students concerned with Big Data, research methods in psychology, data analysis, and study design.

Big data is becoming more prevalent in psychology and the behavioral sciences, and so are the methodological and statistical issues that arise from its use. Psychologists need to be equipped to deal with these. Big data can be generated in experimental studies where, for example, participants’ physiological and psychological responses are tracked over time or where human brain imaging is employed. Obser-vational data from websites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Google is also of increasing interest to psychologists. These sometimes huge data sets, which are often too large for standard computers and can also contain multiple types of data, bring with them challenging ques-

tions about data quality and the generalizability of the results as well as which statistical tools are suitable for analyzing them.

The contributions in this volume explore these challenges, looking at the potential of applying machine learning techniques to big data in psychology as well as the split/analyze/meta-analyze (SAM) ap-proach, which allows big data to be split up into smaller datasets so they can be analyzed with conventional multivariate techniques on standard computers. The issues of replicability, prediction accuracy, and combining types of data are also investigated.
