HOD’S DESK

Mechanical Engineering is one of the oldest stream of

engineering and is one of the most challenging and

exciting career. At MAIT we have B.Tech Program in

Mechanical and Automation Engineering, the course

curriculum of which is designed considering the current

need and requirement of trained professional in

Industries. Engineers must address the most pressing

problems facing society – problems with energy, water,

food, health, and the environment – and do it in a

sustainable, ethical, and humane way. Today

engineering education and learning is passing through a

major transition due to an explosion in availability of

internet and fast communication. Students have access

to varied information on any topic at the click of buttons

of his mobile phone. The role of educators is critical in

such scenario. He must satisfying the queries of young

minds and motivate and help them to understand the

engineering concepts. And then there are the radical

transformations being wrought by technology which has

witness the enormous excitement about online

education. I believe there are huge opportunities to

transform the way we teach engineering, and even who

we teach it to. It will require effective professional

development for both new and experienced instructors

alike.

The team MECHTECH of 3 third year MAE students

(Aditya Roy, Chetan Mishra and Sarthak Jain) secured

1st position with a cash prize of ₹ 35000/- at an event

hackathon “CAMTECHX JUGAADATHON” organized

by CAMTech X, Massachuette General Hospital and Lattice

Innovations at IIT Delhi on 11th – 12th March 2017. The

management committee of MAIT rewarded the team

members by additional prize money of ₹ 35000/-.

The team designed the prototype of an affordable and

efficient product to solve the air pollution problem in slum

areas of small scale industrialized urban areas. The product

acts as an air purifier and as a mosquito trap. The projected

cost of the product is expected to be one-tenth of current

market cost.

Relaxo Footwear Ltd., Bahadurgarh showed the step

by step procedure of making footwear. The students got

an opportunity to witness the different casting processes

(Pneumatic Casting, Extrusion Casting) used in

manufacturing of footwears.

Pragati Combined Cycle Power Plant, Bawana

familarised the students with the boilers, steam turbine,

gas turbine, heat recovery steam generator and the

various control panels.

The informative journey to both the industrial visits

benefitted the students in their internship and further

career enhancement.

A record 727 units of blood was collected during blood donation camp jointly organized by MAIT and

Rotary Club. The event was coordinated by Mr. Harsh Joshi of MAE department and he got an

appreciation letter from the Director General (Prof.) M.L.Goyal.

A practical training course in SCILAB was

organised during Jan-May 2017 in MAE Dept.

based on the choice given by the students. 185

students of 3rd year MAE attended the course and

were awarded certificates based on online

examination conducted by Spoken Tutorial – IIT

Bombay in April 2017 on successful completion

of the course.

The course was conducted in a session of two

periods per week for all 8 groups of MAE as per

the time table. In each session, the students were

shown three to four videos of approximate 10

minutes duration followed by the exercise session

and evaluation by faculty coordinators.

On 17th March 2017, a group of 9 students of MAE

Dept. under the guidance of Ms. Surabhi Lata presented

their research work in various fields i.e. Metal Forming,

Nano-Materials, Composite Material Analysis,

Advanced Material Processing , Multi Scale Modelling

at the International conference on Materials

Processing and Characterization (ICMPC-2017)

organized by Gokaraju Rangaraju Institue of

Engineering and Technology, Hyderabad. Every

paper presented received great commendations by the

jury members and a chapter of glory was added to the

history of MAE-MAIT.

A five days Faculty Development Programme on

Recent Advances in Mechanical Engineering,

was organized by MAE department from 10th to

14th July 2017 which was attended by 32 faculty

members of the department.

The FDP started with the welcome address by Prof.

M.L.Goyal (D irector General-MAIT). The

prominent speakers for the FDP were Prof. P.M.V.

Subbarao (IITD), Prof. S.K.Saha (HOD-

Mechanical IITD), Prof. Naveen Kumar (DTU),

Prof. P. M. Pandey (IITD) and Mr. Gaurav

Aggarwal (scientist ‘D’ DST).

Few lectures were also delivered by the MAE

faculty members - Mr. Vipin Sharma. Mr.

Siddharth, Mr. R.C.Saini, Mr. Ramakant Rana.

The FDP concluded with the vote of thanks by Dr.

V. N. Mathur (HOD-MAE). This session proved

to be highly beneficial for all the participants as an

enhancement to their existing knowledge base.

Dr. Vaibhav Jain (Assistant Professor-MAE

department) completed his PhD from NIT

Kurukshetra (Mech Engg Department) during

the year 2017. His thesis title was “Energy,

Exergy, Economic and Environmental (4E) of

Vapour Compression Absorption Cascaded

Refrigeration System”.

The following faculty members of MAE department are currently pursuing Ph.D.in 2017-18.
