Hockey Week In Fairbanks is a community effortBy Randy Zarnke

Here we are in the middle of the eighth edition of “Hockey Week In Fair-

banks.” Hopefully, by now you already

have participated in some of the activities scheduled for the first half of the event, and you’re looking forward to the remain-der of the week.

We’ve managed to make this event bigger and better each year. This year was no exception.

The exhibit from the Hall of Fame in Toronto last weekend was a special treat for all Interior hockey fans.

This growth and success would not be possible without the support of many individuals, businesses and agencies.

Foremost on that list are the folks who coordinate each event. I can’t list them all here, but they know how much their efforts are appreciated.

We also get great support from Dave Lambert with Emer-ald Isle Pull Tabs, Linda Ingham with the Fairbanks North Star Borough Parks and Recreation Department and Dave Welborn at the Carlson Center.

I also must mention the tre-mendous support we receive from local media. Coverage by radio, TV and the News-Miner has been outstanding.

I would be remiss if I didn’t include the folks who participate in our numerous activities.

We could put on the best party in town, but it would all be meaningless if nobody showed up. Participation has been grow-ing each year, which is gratifying for those of us who put this event together.

The weather for this year’s

event has been simply unbeliev-able.

In past years, we’ve occasion-ally been forced to cancel a few outdoor activities because of cold temperatures. That certain-ly hasn’t been the case this year.

We offer a resounding “thank you” to whoever was in charge of the weather during our 10-day event.

There have been a few jok-ing comments about bringing Gordie Howe or Wayne Gretzky to town for a future edition of “Hockey Week In Fairbanks.” Rest assured … we are working on it.

I look forward to seeing you at one or more of the remaining activities, especially the Hall of Fame ceremony Saturday and

“Skate The Lake” on Sunday. One last “Thank you” to every-

one who helped make “Hockey Week In Fairbanks” a success.

What is Tier III? Tier III means your child will

be on a house team with other kids that are skating at a higher level. Your child will have the

opportunity to participate in tournaments locally and around the State. Tier III teams

may travel to 1 or 2 tournaments, in addition to playing in the State Tournament. Teams will play more competitive games. Tier III

teams skate an average of 3 times per week. The cost is increased above the normal Tier IV

house fees to compensate for the increase in ice time and lower number of players on the

ice at one time.

What is FAHA? Fairbanks Amateur Hockey Association (FAHA) is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to the youth of

the Fairbanks North Star Borough that are interested in hockey at any level. During the regular season, FAHA offers recreational or house league hockey programs for both boys and girls, from ages 4–18, and for all levels of play from first time to long time skaters. FAHA also offers a spring league and summer skills and drills refreshers to keep skaters active even when the regular season ends. Our Ice Dragon (4-6 year olds) and Mite (6-8 year olds) divisions offer an opportunity for beginning skaters to learn the great sport of hockey at a very affordable price. We offer rental gear for this division to help eliminate the need to purchase all new equipment while they are learning the sport.

FAHA Philosophy: The Fairbanks Amateur Hockey Association’s philosophy is to promote the growth of ice hockey and to provide the best possible experience for all participants by encouraging, developing, advancing, and administering the sport.

For more information on Fairbanks Amateur Hockey Association (FAHA), please visit our website http://www.fahaonline.com/

FAHA Goals: • A fair and equal opportunity to participate. • The opportunity for children to learn the basic skills without

the distraction associated with an over-emphasis on winning. • An opportunity for new players who wish to play hockey. • An opportunity for those who wish to advance into a more

competitive environment to do so. • A safe and healthy environment for all. • Qualified adult leadership.

Skate the Lake an event for the whole familyWhen “Hockey In Fairbanks”

wraps up Feb. 9, it will close with an outdoor event

for the entire family. The fourth annual Skate the Lake is scheduled from 1-3 p.m. Feb. 9 at King’s Pond at the end of Hill Road off Davis Road in the southwest part of Fairbanks. Signs will be posted on Davis Road directing skaters to the pond, and convenient parking is available.

An ice track will be prepared around the perimeter of King’s Pond for skaters to enjoy fresh air, clean ice for a nice skate and a roaring bonfire to keep warm. Jim “Clutch” Lounsbury will be using Bernie Karl’s personal Zamboni to clear the track around the edge of the

pond.In addition to skating, event coordi-

nator Jennifer Graves will have refresh-ments available such as hot dogs, hot cocoa and cookies.

“There has been a great turnout every year, and it should be a fun way to wrap up Hockey Week for the entire family,” Graves said. “There’s going to be a big bonfire, so even if you just want to come out and watch, you’ll be able to stay warm.”

The February Freeze girls and wom-en’s hockey tournament is scheduled for that weekend and participants have been encouraged to come out and par-ticipate in the event.

The long-range weather forecast calls for sunny skies and temperatures in the

single digits — a perfect day for an out-door skate.

Hockey Week In Fairbanks is the Interior’s annual mid-winter celebra-tion of the fastest sport on ice. This year, events are scheduled from Jan. 31 through Feb. 9.

Hockey Week In Fairbanks is hosted by the Fairbanks Hockey Hall of Fame and sponsored by the Fairbanks North Star Borough Department of Parks and Recreation and Emerald Isle Pull Tabs.

Event encourages residents to wear favorite hockey jerseysJersey Day is one of the most antic-

ipated events during the Fairbanks Hockey Hall of Fame’s 10-day

“Hockey Week In Fairbanks” celebration. What began as an event for school chil-

dren has blossomed into an event shared by the entire work force in the Interior.

“We incorporated Jersey Day into Hockey Week in 2008, and it was an instant hit,” said Randy Zarnke, president of the Fairbanks Hockey Hall of Fame. “Children from throughout the school district enjoyed the chance to show off their favorite jersey.”

The event was expanded to include the entire community a few years later at the suggestion of local radio personality Charlie O’Toole.

Wear Your Jersey to School and Work Day now encourages all area residents to wear their favorite hockey jersey on the designated day as a way of showing support for the Interior’s most popular winter sport.

This year, Wear Your Jersey to School and Work Day is slated for Friday.

Each year, the Fairbanks Hockey Hall of Fame celebrates Jersey Day at a dif-ferent elementary school in the district. This year, North Pole Elementary School has accepted the invitation to host the celebration, which will include a hockey assembly at the school and a floor hockey

game featuring players from the Alaska Nanooks and students at the school.

“We are very much looking forward to this,” said North Pole Elementary School principal Mark Winford, who played youth hockey on competitive hockey teams in Fairbanks. “This is a hockey school, and the kids will be very excited leading up to it.”

Alaska Nanooks assistant coach Corbin Schmidt and several players participated in the event at Pearl Creek Elementary School last year and will be on hand again this year.

“It was a really fun time for us and the kids at Pearl Creek really loved it,” Schmidt said. “We’re really looking for-ward to being part of it again this year.”

The Nanooks and Ice Dogs will par-ticipate in several activities during the 10-day Hockey Week celebration.

Hockey Week In Fairbanks is coor-dinated by the Fairbanks Hockey Hall of Fame and sponsored by the Borough Parks and Recreation Department and Emerald Isle Pull Tabs. Sport King to offer free skate sharpening Feb. 8One of the perks

for skaters in Fairbanks during

the 10-day Hockey Week celebration is a day of free skate sharpening at the two main hockey shops in town.

Play It Again Sports and Sport King will each offer one day of free skate sharpening during Hockey Week In Fair-banks.

Play It Again sharp-ened skates at no cost Feb. 1.

“Hockey Week has grown into this week-long celebration of our sport,” Play It Again Sports’ Toby Daugherty said. “The enthusiasm has spread throughout the community and our business has been a supporter from the first year, so we’re happy to do it again this year.”

Sport King will offer no-cost skate sharpen-ing Feb. 8, just in time for the Feb. 9 Skate The Lake event at King’s Pond.

“I can’t tell you how much I enjoy Hockey Week,” said Sport King owner and Fairbanks Hockey Hall of Fame inductee Roger McKin-non. “The great hockey families of this town have given me so much over the years. Offering this little gift is the least I can do in return.”

Hockey Week In Fair-banks is organized by the Fairbanks Hockey Hall of Fame.

The 10-day celebra-tion is sponsored by the Fairbanks North Star Borough Department of Parks & Recreation, Emerald Isle pull-tabs and numerous other organizations and busi-nesses.

Free power skating clinics set for Feb. 9A pair of free power skating clinics featuring

nationally acclaimed skating instructor Lisa Kriley, formerly of Fairbanks, are scheduled

for the final day of Hockey Week In Fairbanks, Feb.9, at the Carlson Center.

“It will be really fun to come home and work with the up and coming skaters,” said Kriley, who grew up as a figure skater in Fairbanks and now coaches out of Salt Lake City.

“It’s so much fun to teach young skaters and kids of the kids who I taught in Fairbanks,” Kriley said. “We’ll focus on skating skills, which is the founda-tion of the sport.”

The first clinic is for mite and squirt division play-ers and will run from 9:15-10:30 a.m., followed by a clinic for peewee, bantam and midget division play-ers from 10:45 a.m. to noon.

There is no charge for the clinics, but players need to register in advance as space is limited. To register, send an email to Jennifer House at [email protected].

“We’ll concentrate on the fundamentals of skating, such as balance, agility, transition and power out of your stride,” Kriley said. “Things that will ultimately make them a better hockey player.”

The clinics come at a perfect time in the season. “We’ll revisit the fundamentals in order to get them ready for the tournaments they will play the rest of the season,” Kriley said.

Kriley excelled at the regional and national figure skating levels as a young skater and trained under high level national and international coaches as well as with NHL power skating coaches.

She has been coaching since 1991. Her students range from local to international level competitors, including the Olympics. Four of her figure skaters competed in the U.S. National Championships earli-er this month in Boston.

Kriley is a member of the Professional Skat-ers Association, United States Figure Skating Asso-ciation and the Ice Skating Institute.

Fairbanks Hockey Hall of Fame vice president Bill Duquette has nothing but praise for the clinics. “These skating clinics are a great opportunity for kids to have fun and improve their skills at the same time,” Duquette said. “We’re happy that Lisa will be part of our team during Hockey Week In Fairbanks.”

Hockey Week In Fairbanks, coordinated by the Fairbanks Hockey Hall of Fame, runs through Feb. 9 at venues throughout the Fairbanks North Star Borough.
