From the Activity Director’s DeskWoah! What a quick summer we’ve had. It seems that it just flew by, but we really enjoyed all our time spent outside. A couple more months before we get to start watching all the leaves change colors on our country drives. Are there any craft or painting ideas that you have that you would like us to do? Please see me with your ideas and I will do my best to make sure we do what you’re requesting. The Annual Brentwood Car Show is coming up next month. I’m busy getting all those addresses together to plan and mail out invitations. This is a huge hit so be sure you come to see all the old cars and chat with the owners to learn more about their cars. Dinner and Entertainment will be provided. Look for that date on next month’s calendar. We went to Blue Chip Casino and all the ladies that went had a wonderful time. In July, we started doing a program called “stress free coloring.” There are 7 perks to doing this stress free coloring and they are as follows;

1. Your brain experiences relief by entering a meditative state

2. Stress and anxiety levels have the potential to be lowered

3. Negative thoughts are expelled as you take in positivity

4. Focusing on the present helps you achieve mindfulness

5. Unplugging from technology promotes creation over consumption

6. Coloring can be done by anyone, not just artists or creative types

7. It’s a hobby that can be taken with you wherever you go

So, if this sounds like a good time to you, please come join us when you see it on the calendar again. We have enough supplies for all who want to join in.

ASHLEY LEHIY, Activity Director

RESIDENT SPOTLIGHTThis month, we are “spotlighting” Neil K. Neil was born in Chicago, Illinois. He was married to Jean on February 14, 1953. They were nominated Valentine King & Queen here at Brentwood on their Anniversary 2 years ago. They were married for 63 years and his wife, Jean, lived here at Brentwood with him. Neil started life in Chicago, then when he was in the third grade, they moved to Chesterton. Jean & Neil had 4 children together; Sherry, Cindy, Terry & Mike. Together they have 9 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. Neil worked at US Steel for 30 years as an Instrument Repairman and in combustion in the Black Furnace. He also worked for Burns & Kraft Funeral Homes for 20 years. Neil retired from the Army Reserves after 20 years. He was in the Airborne Unit & made 10 jumps. He retired as a Warrant Officer. He was Commander of the Illiana Power Squadron during his term. Neil is a member of the Knights of Columbus & received the title of “Grand Knight.” As a family, they enjoyed going on vacation to Florida. Neil still enjoys making that trip as he just went over the winter months with his daughter, Sherry, and her husband. We missed him while he was gone, but he enjoyed soaking up the sun and came back with a great tan, while the rest of us didn’t have that tan. Neil & Jean’s son Mike was stationed in Germany so Neil & Jean made a trip there to visit their son. What is Neil’s favorite thing about Brentwood? He said he likes that he has his privacy here, the friendly staff and the wonderful care that is given here.

From the Health Service Director’s DeskBLADDER HEALTHIt’s that time of month again that we discuss a helpful health topic going from A-Z. This month we will discuss Bladder Health. I know bladder health is not a hot topic, but everyone is affected by it.

WHAT I S THE BLADDER?The bladder is a hollow organ that stores urine. Our pelvic floor muscles help hold urine in the bladder. The bladder is located in the lower abdomen. It is a part of the urinary system, which also includes the kidneys, ureters, and urethra.

WHY DO WE MAKE UR INE?The body gets nutrients from what we eat and drink. The body can’t use all parts of the food and drinks, so after our body takes what it needs from the food and drinks, it has to get rid of the leftover wastes. The kidneys help remove these wastes and extra water by filtering them out of the blood to make urine. The urine made in the kidneys travels through the ureters to the bladder, and the urine exits the body through the urethra.

DAILY UR INAT IONEach day an adult passes about a quart and a half of urine through the bladder, and out of the body. The amount of urine you make changes based on the following factors.

• How much fluid you put in your body.

• How much fluid you lose by sweating.

• How much fluid you lose by breathing.

• The medications you take.

HOW AGING AFFECTS THE BLADDERAs we age, the bladder changes. The elastic bladder tissue may toughen and become less stretchy. A less stretchy bladder cannot hold as much urine as before and might make you go to the bathroom more often. The bladder wall and pelvic floor muscles may weaken. Weak bladder wall may make it hard to empty the bladder fully, and also make it difficult to hold urine in the bladder, which causes urine to leak.

COMMON BLADDER PROBLEMS• Lower urinary track symptoms

(LUTS): group of symptoms such as trouble urinating, loss of bladder control, leaking of urine, lower back discomfort, and frequent need to urinate. If you feel you are having any of these symptoms please see your Brentwood Nurse.

• Bladder infection (cystitis): most common type of urinary trach infection (UTI). A bladder infection means that bacteria (or germs) have entered the bladder.

BLADDER PROBLEMS AND THE PROSTATE IN MENBladder problems occur more often in women, but they are also quite common in men. The reasons for the problems can be different in men and women. Men have a prostate gland surrounding the opening of the bladder, while most tissue gets smaller with aging, the prostate can get larger. When it becomes too large it can restrict the flow of urine through the urethra. This can make it hard to start urinating, because the stream to be slow, and prevent men from completely emptying the bladder.

If you are interested more in this topic or have a question please see your Brentwood nurse.
