Why has the HMHP Foundation become a transformative agent of change and a beacon of hope for those in need?

Our donors know that breast care centers, dental clinics and the 50+ projects the Foundation supports each year cannot be built solely by compassion and good intentions. The truth is, every project requires a financial commitment.

And because of our donors, we are able to provide $2 million in annual support for these vital health services to thousands of people living here, in the Mahoning Valley.

With dozens of new proposals coming in each year – all incredibly worthy – we want to do even more.

In this brochure, we’ve outlined some interesting facts about how your donations are put to work. You will see that the HMHP Foundation is helping to transform the Mahoning Valley, thanks to the philanthropic vision of its citizens.

In short: Because of the generosity of its donors

CHARITY CARE IN THE MAHONING VALLEY IS RISING. HMHP IS SHOULDERING THE LARGEST SHARE OF THE BURDEN. In any given year, $25 to $35 million in charity care is delivered at facilities supported by the

HMHP Foundation. Nearly 100,000 patients receive check-ups, emergency care and surgeries

regardless of their ability to pay. Here in the Mahoning Valley, the need for charity care is

widespread and continues to grow.

THE MAJORITY OF IN-PATIENT CARE IN THE MAHONING VALLEY IS PROVIDED BY HMHP. More people count on St. Elizabeth, St. Joseph and St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Centers

than on all the other health care facilities in the region combined! We take this responsibility

very seriously and are committed to providing the area with the very best care. We have funded

numerous expansion projects in recent years. We are financing new, life-saving technologies.

And we are continually supporting medical education – through technology, internships, and

scholarships – to make sure the best medical minds remain here.

QUALITY CARE IS OUR COMMITMENT AT HMHP. HMHP makes a significant investment to keep its hospitals running at the highest level of quality

and comfort. Before a single person is cared for, consoled or healed, we spend millions to ensure

that our facilities remain the best in the region and beyond. In fact, routine capital expenditures to

maintain and repair our existing facilities and equipment are often more than $25 million annually!

DONORS TO THE HMHP FOUNDATION CONTRIBUTED $5 MILLION TO BRING A WORLD-CLASS BREAST CARE CENTER TO THE MAHONING VALLEY. Mortality rates for breast cancer in the Mahoning Valley are among the highest in the nation. To reverse this frightening trend, it was clear that something dramatic had to be done. And so, the idea for Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center was born.

Championed by Dr. Rashid Abdu, whose wife lost her battle with breast cancer, donors to the HMHP Foundation gave more than $5 million to build a facility that rivals any in the world. Equipped with the latest technology, the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center offers

advanced diagnostic care to all women in the Mahoning Valley, regardless of their ability to pay.

SCHOLARSHIPS ExCEEDING $600,000 HAVE BEEN PROVIDED TO NURSING STUDENTS IN THE AREA. The HMHP Foundation is helping nursing students with needed scholarships. In the past 15 years, we’ve been able to provide scholarships to 250 students, exceeding $600,000 in assistance.

In addition, the Registered Apprentice Program and Nurse Scholarship Programs have helped hundreds of dedicated individuals find rewarding careers in the medical field. Funded by the HMHP Foundation, the Registered Apprentice Program supports those who are on a path to a career as a nurse’s aide or even a nurse. The apprentices receive tuition assistance and earn college credits.

MORE THAN 1,000 CHILDREN IN NEED OF DENTAL CARE ARE SERVED EACH YEAR THROUGH THE HMHP FOUNDATION. In 2001, the first Smile Station dental van set out on the road to provide dental care to the area’s school children, many of whom had never been to the dentist. Today, the program has grown to include two state-of the-art vans with all the capabilities of a fully-functioning dental clinic. Here, children receive cleanings, fillings, sealants and, if necessary, more complex procedures. Moreover, these children learn to develop the oral health habits that they will need to maintain their bright smiles for a lifetime.

The investment made in this all-important program continues to be substantial. Our newest van, which we unveiled in 2012, cost in excess of $300,000. And when you consider the cost of the average dental exam is about $100 and a filling is as much as $200, you can start to see the financial commitment we’re making to our youth each day.

HMHPIS THE ECONOMIC ENGINE OF THE VALLEY. As the largest employer in the Mahoning Valley, Humility of Mary Health Partners is vital to the

economy. More than 5,000 employees count on us for their livelihood – doctors, nurses, support staff,

administrative personnel and more. In addition, HMHP supports local vendors and suppliers. People

you work with, people you see at the grocery store, people you call neighbors and friends. When

these people are successful, the whole local economy thrives.

A healthy hospital system means a healthy economy, a higher standard of living and quality of life.

It’s a responsibility we take very seriously.

MORE THAN $2 MILLION IN ANNUAL SUPPORT FOR COMMUNITY HEALTH PROGRAMS IS PROVIDED THROUGH THE HMHP FOUNDATION. In any given year, we fund more than 50 different projects that affect virtually every person in the

region. Our Resource Mothers Program, for instance, gives high-risk pregnant women guidance before

and after they give birth. Our prescription assistance program helps provide free medicines to those

who can’t afford them. And our ride programs ensure that the elderly never miss a doctor’s appointment.

We also fund many other initiatives that address many areas of need in our community.

To support these programs, we sponsor numerous community events.

Our largest is the Panerathon, a 10k race and 2-mile fun run/walk in

support of Joanie’s Promise and the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast

Care Center. Made possible by Covelli Enterprises and Panera Bread,

the race brings more than 6,000 people to downtown Youngstown and

raises thousands of dollars. But as the economic environment continues

to be challenged and as government programs continue to be cut, the

support of the community, local businesses and donors like you will be

more important than ever.

Join the thousands who are already making their mark. There has been a groundswell of support for the mission of HMHP and the HMHP Foundation.

Inspired by the healing ministry of Jesus Christ and the legacy of the Sisters of the Humility of Mary,

donors and care-providers of all faith traditions have become part of a unified team doing this amazing

work. We don’t ignore the children who need dental care, or turn our backs on the senior citizens

who need assistance to get to the doctor, or close our eyes to those who are struggling with poverty

and are in need of health care. Nor do we lack the compassion for all who are facing medical

challenges and the commitment to provide for them the highest level of skill and care.
