Organizational Values

Page 4: HMHP 2011 Annual Report

Being the president and chief executive

officer of an organization as it celebrates

its 100th year of service to this

community is both a humbling and

exciting experience. I am reminded of

the many sacrifices made by the Sisters

of the Humility of Mary when they first

came to this country. I have reflected

on the wisdom and strength of the

administrators of St. Elizabeth Health

Center and the leaders over the years

of all of the other members of Humility of

Mary Health Partners (HMHP). The past

15 years of my career have been as a

member of this faith-based organization;

the employees, physicians, volunteers

The events and accomplishments of

2011 have been significant. HMHP

continued to bring new services, new

technology and new physicians to

our community. In addition to special

centennial celebrations throughout 2011,

many of the annual HMHP events and

celebrations reflected a centennial theme.

St. Elizabeth Hospital opened its doors to

patients on December 8, 1911. During

2011, we were honored to have

Mrs. Martha Murphy join us for many of

our centennial events. Mrs. Murphy is the

daughter of St. Elizabeth’s first medical

staff president, Dr. Raymond E. Whelan,

and one of St. Elizabeth’s first nurses,

Margaret Gallagher Whelan.

Mrs. Murphy’s son, Father Richard

Murphy, celebrated a noon Mass in the

St. Elizabeth Chapel on December 8,

2011. The connections of generations

to St. Elizabeth and HMHP are strong

and board members have become my

extended family.

HMHP’s evolution has been driven by the

mission and vision of the Sisters and by

the support of the community. Through

your generosity, St. Elizabeth Hospital

evolved from its humble beginnings in the

Fitch House to the expansive campus it is

today. It is fitting that part of our centennial

year included the opening of the Joanie

Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center –

a reflection, again, of the generous

support of the community for HMHP.

I hope you enjoy HMHP’s centennial

annual report to the community. I look

forward to continuing the tradition of

those leaders who have come before

me. Please join me as our second

century unfolds of caring for the health

care needs of the residents of the

Mahoning Valley.

Message from the President

Message from the Board of Directors

evidence of the dedication of this

organization to our community.

As HMHP embarks on its next

100 years, undoubtedly there will be

challenges. With dedicated focus on its

mission and values, HMHP will continue

to grow and thrive as a pillar of the

region and in service to all. Thank you

for your ongoing support.

Guided by the mission of caring set forth by the Sisters of the Humility of Mary more than 100 years ago, Humility of Mary Health Partners continues to grow in strength and service to the region. There were many major accomplishments

during 2011:

– The 100th anniversary of St. Elizabeth

Health Center and the evolution of

HMHP’s healing ministry were celebrated

throughout the year.

– St. Elizabeth and St. Joseph health centers

were redesignated by the American Nurses

Credentialing Center Magnet® Recognition

Program for excellence in nursing.

St. Elizabeth and St. Joseph were the first

hospitals in Ohio and among the first 60

hospitals in the nation to earn that honor.

– St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center

received Magnet recognition for the

first time. The Magnet designation also

includes St. Elizabeth Emergency and

Diagnostic Center, Austintown,

St. Joseph Emergency and Diagnostic

Center, Andover, and St. Joseph

Outpatient Surgery Center, Howland.

– The Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast

Care Center at St. Elizabeth opened in

November as the result of significant

support from the community.

An increasing demand for HMHP’s high

quality care prompted much growth in

2011, including:

– HMHP Physician Associates was formed

as a subsidiary organization, and several

community physicians joined HMHP

during the year.

– Eight new physicians were recruited to

the market, including a rheumatologist,

endocrinologist, otolaryngologist, cardiac

surgeon, radiation oncologist and three

medical oncologists.

– St. Elizabeth Health Center’s Dental

Clinic was doubled in size through the

generosity of several grants received by

the HMHP Foundation.

– St. Elizabeth’s Pulmonary Health and

Research Center opened.

– St. Joseph Health Center opened a

new infusion center, the first of its kind

in Warren.

– Palliative care services were expanded at

the St. Joseph Cancer Center.

– St. Elizabeth Boardman opened a

dedicated unit for congestive heart

failure patients.

– Patient lift equipment was installed at

all three hospitals for safer patient

movement and transfers and to

reduce workplace injuries.

– St. Elizabeth added technology with

stealth navigation in surgery for complex

spine and neurosurgery patients.

– St. Elizabeth added 4D CT perfusion

for the treatment of stroke patients.

– New surgical safety checklist boards

were installed in all 34 HMHP surgical

suites to help support patient safety and

better surgical outcomes; the boards

were underwritten by a grant from the

HMHP Foundation.

– HMHP launched an updated website,

implemented its first social media plan

and launched its Facebook page.

– Laurel Lake Retirement Community,

Hudson, broke ground for an expansion

of Crown Center, its 75-bed rehabilitation

and skilled nursing facility.

In keeping with HMHP’s tradition of bringing

innovative programs to the valley, additional

investments in technology were made:

– HMHP continued its journey to implement

a single patient electronic health record

when it went live in August at its

hospitals and emergency departments,

making HMHP the first health system in

the region to achieve this accomplishment.

– Tomosynthesis (3D digital breast imaging)

and breast-specific Gamma imaging (for

molecular level views) were introduced

when the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive

Breast Care Center opened.

SISTERS IN THE GARDEN, 1854 – 1864, The sisters from the early religious community in France chose to wear the long, simple dress and fluted cap typical of the French women in their village. They wore blue to honor the Blessed Mother. The statue of Mary was brought by the sisters to America and today is still on display at Villa Maria.

FIRST HOSPITAL IN THE MAHONING VALLEY, 1875, The two-room clinic soon was not enough space to care for the railroad workers. So the sisters built a larger facility next door, which was called the St. Joseph Infirmary and referred to by the men as “The Sisters Hospital up in Lowell Hill.” This was the first hospital in the Mahoning Valley. The little hospital remained open until 1911, when St. Elizabeth Hospital opened in Youngtown, Ohio.

The Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care CenterThe gift of the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive

Breast Care Center at St. Elizabeth was

given to the community during a blessing and

ribbon cutting ceremony on Nov. 2, 2011.

“The Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast

Care Center is a gift given by members

of our community,” said Dr. Rashid Abdu,

whose vision, persistence and promise to

his wife, Joanie, made the center a reality.

“They gave of themselves and of their

resources to build a better community and

a better tomorrow. Collectively, it is our gift

to future generations of women, and some

men, who may need the excellent care,

compassion and service that this center

will provide.

“Eighteen years ago when Joanie was

in her death bed from breast cancer,

I promised her of this day,” he said.

“It was a dream. Now it is real.”

The center was designed with the specific

needs of breast patients in mind. The

environment is patient-centered, warm

and comforting with a sense of peace

and well-being.

The center features a team of world-class

physicians, surgeons, nurses, technologists,

breast health navigators and dedicated

staff radiologists — all with extensive

experience in breast health and utilizing the

most advanced equipment available.

This interdisciplinary team of specialists

meets weekly to evaluate each individual

breast cancer patient’s case. The entire

team works together to provide the best

treatment options for breast disease.

The center offers complete diagnostic

breast care services, including screening

and diagnostic 3D digital mammography,

ultrasound, MRI, breast-specific gamma

imaging, needle localization, biopsy

services and bone density testing.

“We were all very excited to open this

beautiful new center to the public,”

said Chuck Folkwein, HMHP vice

president of ancillary services, “but the

proudest person of all was Dr. Abdu,

who was present to greet the first

patients on opening day.”

And give them their gift!

A ‘Gift’ to the Community

Many of the people involved in the development of the center joined together

for the official ribbon cutting. From left, Rodney Lamberson, Wayne Tennant, Chuck Folkwein,

Daryl Cameron, Dr. Ralph Perrico, Jim Schultis, Bishop George V. Murry, Dr. Rashid Abdu, Sister

Stella Schmid, David Sabine, Dr. Nancy Gantt, Sister Susan Schorsten and Bob Shroder.

Dr. Rashid Abdu speaks during the ribbon cutting of the Joanie

Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center on November 2.

Blessing and Dedication StoriesMany of the people who attended the

blessing and dedication ceremony noted

the beautiful arrangement near the speaker’s

podium. However, few knew the stories

behind the items used in the centerpiece.

The crystal bowl that held the holy water for

the blessing was on loan from Sister Susan

Schorsten, Spiritual Leader of the Sisters

of the Humility of Mary. Dr. Rashid and

Joanie Abdu gave this bowl to Sister Susan

as a farewell gift when she resigned as

administrator of St. Elizabeth in 1993. The

pink bible arrived, anonymously, in HMHP’s

spiritual care offices in October. Passages

intended to give comfort and hope to

women with breast cancer are highlighted

in pink. Truly, a few of what will be many

blessings in store for the center.

HEALTH CARE MINISTRY, 1875, The sisters struggled to support themselves and the orphans. During the building of the railroad in nearby Lowellville, a deal was struck with the railroad officials to purchase the Villa trees for railroad ties. In exchange, the sisters promised to care for any sick or injured railroad workers. The sisters set aside two rooms for a small clinic to care for these men.

Page 15: HMHP 2011 Annual Report

On March 30, a blessing and open house

was held for the expansion project of the

St. Elizabeth Dental Clinic.

The expansion project grew from great

need, with volumes increasing every year.

In 2010, the clinic saw over 7,000 patients,

an eight percent increase over 2009.

“The completion of this project will have

a great and positive impact on the

community, particularly the poor and

underserved, who would otherwise not

have access to dental care,” said

Dr. Frank Beck, St. Elizabeth dental

residency program director.

The expansion included adding four

state-of-the-art dental operatories,

increasing the total to eight, with features

such as electronic health records, digital

radiography, cameras for patients to

view the exam and a patient education

video system.

The dental clinic is the largest safety net

for dental services in the Ohio. Safety net

dental clinics provide oral health care to

individuals regardless of ability to pay.

There are 122 safety net dental clinics in

Ohio, all with a mission to provide care

to vulnerable populations, such as

individuals enrolled in Medicaid, those

without adequate dental insurance, or

those who lack the cultural, mental

or linguistic skills necessary to negotiate

the traditional health care system.

Support for the expansion project was

provided by the HMHP Foundation,

HealthPath Foundation, the Ohio

Department of Health, and the

US Health Resources and Services

Administration.

Mobile Dental Service Adds New Van The St. Elizabeth Dental Clinic not only

treats patients at its clinic in the

Ambulatory Care Center at the hospital,

it also takes the show on the road with

a mobile dental clinic to provide dental

health services and education to

underserved children and adults in

Mahoning and Trumbull counties.

Called the Smile Station, the mobile

dental clinic service added a second van

to meet the needs of the community in

2011. The Smile Station dental vans are

staffed by dentists and hygienists who

provide comprehensive dental care in

a mobile setting.

Services include oral exams, cleanings,

sealants, extractions, fillings, fluoride

treatments, x-rays, root canals, hygiene

instruction, oral cancer screenings,

referrals and education.

In 2011, the mobile dental service

provided dental education to over 1,400

preschool and first grade children. Children

received toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss

and dental education information.

The new Smile Station van was

generously supported by the HMHP

Foundation, Kikel Trust, HRSA, HMHP

Medical Education Department,

CareSource Foundation and the Ohio

Dental Association Foundation.

The dental clinic staff (from left), Jenna Chismar; Christy Zedaker; Becky Tarr; Mary Ann DeBlasio; Dr. Douglas Styka, associate program director; Stephanie Gay; Dr. Frank Beck, program director; Chrissy Gay; Barbara Frank; Beatrice Julian; Chrissy Hassey; and Betty Saunders enjoyed the open house and blessing ceremony.

When Tom Gunsher traveled from his home

near Buffalo, New York, to the Covelli Centre

in Youngstown, he had no idea that part of

his trip would include an ambulance ride and

a much longer stay than he had planned.

As he and his family arrived to hear a concert

by ZZ Top and Lynyrd Skynyrd, Mr. Gunsher,

71, started seeing stars in more ways than

one. He began feeling nauseous, lightheaded

and dizzy, and suddenly, he slumped to the

ground, unconscious. He was in full cardiac

arrest (suffering a heart attack).

Fortunately, St. Elizabeth Health Center’s

mobile intensive care unit is always on hand

at major Covelli Centre performances to

respond to medical emergencies. Using an

automatic external defibrillator, members of

the unit shocked Mr. Gunsher’s erratically

beating heart. A second squad was also

at the scene, and its EMS providers

performed lifesaving cardio-pulmonary

resuscitation (CPR).

Mr. Gunsher was transported to

St. Elizabeth, the region’s only Level I

Trauma Center, the most highly skilled

possible. “I woke up in the ambulance,”

he says. “I thought my care was very

good – from the paramedics and nurses

to the doctors. The surgeon, Dr. Fulton,

must have done a good job because I

recovered pretty quickly.”

Upon arrival at St. Elizabeth, the

emergency department staff gave the

patient intravenous medications to restore

his heart to a normal rhythm. Then he was

taken to the cardiac catheterization

laboratory, where a cardiologist discovered

that three of Mr. Gunsher’s arteries were

80 to 100 percent blocked. Soon after,

Jeffrey Fulton, DO, director of cardio-

thoracic surgery, performed quadruple

bypass surgery.

Mr. Gunsher’s situation is a textbook case

spanning the full spectrum of heart care –

from outstanding pre-hospital care, which

resulted in revival of the victim, to a speedy

transport to a Level I Trauma Center and

expert interventions by highly skilled

emergency medicine and cardiology

physicians, nurses and other clinical staff.

“Many people like Mr. Gunsher could

prevent heart attacks by getting regular

checkups, eating right and exercising,”

says Bernadette Skruck, physician

assistant at St. Elizabeth. Mr. Gunsher

had not been to a doctor in at least 10

years. Fortunately, he is doing well now,

thanks to the speedy and highly skilled

care he received here in Youngstown.”

Now home in New York, Mr. Gunsher is

enjoying life. “I’m feeling better,” he says.

“I changed my diet and do things like

watch my salt intake and eat wheat bread

instead of white. About three times a

week, I work out at the gym, where I use

the treadmill and strength machines.”

All this is good news for his family, including

a son, daughter and two grandchildren

who are all a big part of Mr. Gunsher’s life.

A retired cost analyst for an aerospace

company, he likes to attend automotive

events. “I watch drag races and help

friends work on their drag-racing cars,”

he says. “Plus, I enjoy music and friends.”

Thanks to his finely tuned heart, Mr.

Gunsher should be able to enjoy these

activities and the people in his life for years

to come.

“Cultural competency is a set of behaviors, attitudes, and policies that come together in a system, agency, or among professionals that enables effective work in cross-cultural situations.” - office of Minority HealthUS Department of Health and Human Services

Cultural competence in health care

describes the ability to provide care to

patients with diverse values, beliefs and

behaviors, including adjusting the delivery

of care to meet a patient’s social, cultural

and linguistic needs.

In 2011, HMHP’s community outreach

department added two bilingual (Spanish

and English) employees to meet growing

community need as the number of new

clients increased significantly. One bilingual

employee joined the Resource Mothers

program and the other joined the Hispanic,

Latino and Immigrant Health program.

The HMHP Hispanic, Latino and Immigrant

Health program added a Promotora.

This tile comes from a program for

migrant farm workers that started in 1985

in southwest Michigan. The Promotora

works as a community health liaison for

Spanish-speaking individuals and families,

encouraging them to seek medical care,

promoting health awareness, providing

information about community resources

and teaching basic health education.

The HMHP Hispanic, Latino and Immigrant

Health program has seen significant

growth over the past few years. The

program provided more than 650 health

screenings in 2011 and went with non-

English proficient clients to close to 1,000

in-person appointments for medical, social

and financial services. These numbers

represent increases of over 60 percent

compared with 2010.

Since 2009, HMHP has added a special

section to its internal website to provide

easy access to tools for employees when

treating limited English-speaking patients

or patients with special needs. The

organization has begun to evaluate clinical

outcomes as well as patient experience

based on ethnicity. All three HMHP hospitals

have been evaluated to assess the

organization’s performance according to

the 14 national standards for Culturally

and Linguistically Appropriate Services

(CLAS) in health care. These standards

focus on the actual delivery of culturally

competent care, the availability of language

assistance and the organizational support

for cultural competency. Action plans were

developed and are being used to address

areas that need improvement, such as

using only medically trained interpreters for

medical/clinical translations and ensuring

that every level of the organization reflects

the diversity of the Mahoning Valley.

HMHP’s Continuing Journey to Culturally Competent Care

Providing a medical interpreter for a person who is not able to speak or understand English helps to make sure that there is

SMALLPOX EPIDEMICS, 1864/1872, Shortly after the sister arrived in America, a smallpox epidemic broke out in New Bedford, Pennsylvania, and in 1872 another epidemic hit Lowellville, Ohio. Both times, the sisters went into the homes of farmers and took care of those stricken with the illness. They often brought the children back to the convent so they would not be exposed to the disease.

HMHP’s mission is to extend the healing

ministry of Jesus by improving the health

of our communities with emphasis on

people who are poor and under-served.

Whoever comes to HMHP in need is

cared for, regardless of their ability to pay.

There are more than 54 million people in

the United States who do not have health

insurance; more than eight out of 10 are

in working families. Many of them live in

the Mahoning Valley. That number has

grown considerably in the past seven

years, given the area’s economy. While

there continues to be debate about

national health care legislation, the reality

is that community not for profit hospitals

bear the burden of caring for individuals

who are unable to pay for some, or all,

of their care.

Since 2005, the number of charity care

cases – both inpatient and outpatient –

at HMHP has increased by almost 50

percent. The cost to HMHP of caring

for charity care patients was more than

$26.7 million in 2011, an increase of 85

percent since 2005. By being a good

steward of its resources, HMHP has

been able to meet this community need

and will continue to do so in the future.

Charity care makes up the largest

component of HMHP’s demonstrated

community benefit as reported to the

Internal Revenue Service. Not for profit

hospitals must demonstrate that they

deserve that tax status. In 2010, the latest

year available, HMHP provided $173

in community benefit for every $100 it

would have paid in taxes.

Charity Care and Community Benefit

Strong performances by athletes and volunteers across a wide range of activities resulted in HMHP claiming first place honors in the Red Division for the 2011 Community Cup. HMHP team

members celebrate being named champions!

We realized a dream in 2011. When

the ceremonial ribbon was cut to signal

the opening of the Joanie Abdu

Comprehensive Breast Care Center,

a large crowd cheered. We were

thrilled that the promise Dr. Rashid

Abdu made to his beautiful wife Joanie

17 years ago had finally come true.

We were gratified to know the benefits

this wonderful facility will bring to our

community. We were humbled that so

many shared our vision and were

willing to work with us to transform

health care in our valley.

Partnerships are vital. The HMHP

Foundation, with its staff of dedicated

employees, can only do so much to

meet the needs of our community.

It takes others, many others, to make

that happen. We are so grateful to

those whose names you will see on the

following pages. These donors didn’t

simply hope for a better community,

they became active participants with

us in achieving it. Because of their

generosity, the foundation was able to

award almost $4 million to HMHP

entities to support programs that

benefit our area.

The impact of those awards, however,

far exceeds the dollars spent. For

example, the foundation funds HMHP’s

Prescription Assistance Program. Staff

members screen individuals to see

if they are eligible for free or low-cost

medications from pharmaceutical

companies and help them with their

applications. Thanks to the kindness of

our donors, more than 6,000 requests

were submitted for medicines this year,

with an adjusted wholesale value of

$5 million.

Message from the HMHP Foundation

Additionally, thousands of people have

stopped smoking with help from the

HMHP Regional Tobacco Treatment

Center. The health of low-income

individuals with diabetes was improved

though the distribution of glucose test

strips. An innovative program assigning

pharmacists to work with physicians in

the St. Elizabeth emergency department

improved patient satisfaction, decreased

adverse drug reactions, reduced time to

receive medication and saved money.

The Mobile Dental Clinic (Smile Station)

continues removing barriers to dental

care by traveling to schools and

community centers to provide dental

exams and services. A second mobile

clinic was purchased to offer additional

services throughout the region.

Our foundation’s board of directors

works tirelessly to enable us to reach

our goals. We are grateful to them all

for their efforts. Each brings a unique

perspective and experience, which

enriches all of us.

St. Elizabeth Health Center just

celebrated its 100th birthday. The next

one hundred years will see tremendous

advances in health care. Treatments

and technologies will change. But, one

constant will remain...the generous

heart and soul of our community.

A successful organization relies on the

dedication and talent of its employees.

A truly successful organization inspires its

employees to share and support its vision.

Those two truisms were confirmed in the

employees came together to form the

ROSE Club. ROSE stands for: Reaching

Out, Serving Employees.

The HMHP Foundation, led by Jennifer

Brindisi and an employee steering

committee, launched the ROSE Club as

a full-scale employee giving campaign.

Initial donations supported the Joanie

Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care

Center. Emphasis was on participation,

rather than gift amount. Employees had

the opportunity of giving an outright gift or

contributing through payroll deduction for

one or two years.

The program included incentives for

employees giving $100 or more.

These employees were recognized as

Centennial Club members and an

anonymous physician donor generously

added $50 to each of those donations. In

addition, the HMHP Foundation matched

half of that gift, with the matching founda-

Sam Covelli (left), chief executive officer of Covelli Enterprises, and Jim Schultis, president of the HMHP Foundation, enjoy a day in the sun at the 2nd Annual Panerathon.

It’s going to be a challenge to top Panera-

thon 2011! More than 4,000 walkers and

runners showed up ready to go on the

morning of the second annual Panerathon

at the Covelli Center. August 28 was a

perfect day for a 10K run or 2-mile walk/

fun run! The event raised $191,000, with

100 percent of the proceeds devoted to

the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast

Care Center at St. Elizabeth.

Sam Covelli and Covelli Enterprises are

so pleased with the outpouring of support

for the event they’ve decided to make

Panerathon a signature fundraising event.

Future events will support a new program

at the JACBCC called “Joanie’s Promise,”

a program that will provide mammograms

at no cost to low-income individuals or

those with no health insurance. “We are

proud and happy to partner with Covelli

Enterprises and its fine employee team,”

says James P. Schultis.

Panerathon 2011 was a two-day event.

The party kicked off the night before with a

sold out performance by singer and song-

writing legend Barry Manilow at the Covelli

Center. Sponsorships are growing, with

a total of 100 generous local businesses

supporting the event!

tion funds going to support projects at the

employee’s home facility.

“We are extremely grateful to and

impressed by our ROSE Club members,”

says Jim Schultis, president, HMHP

Foundation. “The campaign exceeded

my expectations because so many made

very generous pledges.”

In just four months, the HMHP

Foundation welcomed nearly five hundred

new donors. The $135,000 raised by

employees generated more than

$350,000 with matching funds included.
