RIVER COTTAGE

Hilo Medical Center Foundation

launched a fundraising campaign

to repair the hospital’s 4,000

square-foot River Cottage to house

medical students and residents ro-

tating at the residency program, the

hospital and community physicians

offices.

After seeking community and

local businesses for support, HPM

stepped up to donate the roofing

materials and Sherwin William

donated the paint.

“By repairing the River Cottage,

we will be ensuring medical stu-

dents and new doctors have a posi-

tive experience in Hilo,” said Lori

“This project is very much in line

with our mission to support the

hospital and benefit our commu-

nity.”

LOBBY RENOVATION

In March, the Foundation

received the “Secret Life of the

Sea” painting by Hilo artist

Christina Skaggs. The newly

refreshed hospital lobby was

selected as the location to display

Skaggs’ artwork. Her donation

rounds out the Hilo Medical

Center’s lobby renovation project.

In addition, artwork by members

of the Hilo Photo Club also graces

the walls along the lobby corridor.

The Foundation raised funds for

new carpeting, painting, lighting,

paneling and furniture.

“We also appreciate the tremen-

dous financial contributions by

First Hawaiian Bank, Hawaii

Electric Light Company and

Hawaiian Telcom,” said Rogers.

“Their generosity has given the

community a beautiful and

soothing lobby.”

T he Hilo Medical Center

Foundation Board of

Directors is pleased to

present our 2010-2011

Annual Report.

Our East Hawaii community is most

fortunate to have many, many generous

communitarians. All of you continue to

support the new Hilo Medical Center

hospital; the largest acute hospital on

Hawaii Island. We are all very grateful

for our dedicated physicians and

medical staff who care for our families,

residents, and visitors 24 hours a day,

everyday.

Because of you, our generous donors

and community stakeholders, we were

able to accomplish many things this

year, and it is only through everyone’s

combined effort and support that we,

your Foundation, are able to continue

to do what we do, which is to be a

community partner supporting

community healthcare needs and the

new Hilo Medical Center.

Some of the Foundation’s major

accomplishments this year was helping

the hospital with its Lobby Renovation,

fundraising for and purchasing a

14-passenger accessibility van for the

hospital’s Long Term Care Facility,

Support of the Scrubs project and

hospital staff recognition ceremonies,

continued support of the Rural

Residency Program that will bring new

doctors to practice in our community,

and renovation of the old hospital

administrator’s cottage aka “the river

cottage.”

The River Cottage will house visiting

medical students who do rotations with

our local physicians and house

residents until they get settled in the

community. Lastly, we have a new

strategic plan in place that creates the

roadmap to guide our efforts to best

help the community and the hospital in

the coming years.

The Foundation is capable, resolved,

and steadfast in our ability and desire to

serve the hospital, and our

community’s needs for years to come!

We humbly and gratefully thank you

for your generosity and, more

importantly for your belief in our

efforts and your continued dedication

to your community.

T he Executive Committee

has operated consistent

with the By-Laws and

Policies of the HMCF.

Monthly meetings were held. The

annual review of the Executive

Director was completed. Policies and

procedures were reviewed and up

dated. A list of projects, programs

and/or equipment were established

and prioritized for healthcare

services for our community via

HMC. Of note, HMCF got behind

the fledgling residency program and

brought it back to life and it also

purchased the resident's van for the

LTC facility. The Foundation is now

partnering and working

cooperatively with other community

service organizations. Local

businesses are donating materials to

renovate the River Cottage to house

medical students.

The Foundation is maturing and is

being recognized by other service

organizations and businesses.

Dawn Pung

Foundation President

In 2011 the Development

Committee (DC) reviewed its

strategic plan, by-laws, and

policies to ensure the

committee's tasks were aligned

with the overall HMCF goals.

This resulted in modification

of the bylaws and revisions to

the DC portion of the strategic

plan plus revising policy docu-

ments. The bylaw and policy

changes have been submitted

for Board review and

approval. The revised DC

strategic plan incorporates six

objectives with specific,

measureable actions to

promote continued success in

fundraising.

When integrated with the

other committee input to the

HMCF strategic plan, the DC

believes the actions outlined

will strengthen the

foundation's capability and

provide an effective approach

to meeting its commitments.

This year the ad hoc committee has

met ten times. The purposes of this

ad hoc committee are to: identify

grant sources; coordinate efforts to

write grants for Board identified

projects; assure that processes are in

place to accept and distribute the

grant monies.

The highlight of this year’s work

has been the purchase of a Van for

the Hilo Medical Center’s Extended

Care Facility. The effort to raise

funds through grant sources has been

a two year project.

With the initiative of Dr. Robbins

contacting various vendors to obtain

the most viable price and having

received funding from grants

submitted to HMSA Foundation,

Matson Navigation, McInerny

Foundation, Atherton Family

Foundation and Alexander and

Baldwin Foundation, the van was

purchased and delivered to the

Extended Care Facility in April of

2011.

The Ad Hoc Committee has also

developed a system to research

possible foundations that may be

useful funding sources for future

projects. This will allow for potential

grant resources being available

within the Foundation office.

Ad Hoc Grant Committee Report

HMCF entered the world of social

media this year with a Facebook

page along with refurbishing our

website with online donation

capability. This was made possible

with the contracted help of Ian Hatch

of A.C. Design and Services, LLC.

Using social media, along with

staying committed to communicating

via mail, telephone and newspaper

help keep the foundation in the

minds of the community we serve.

A meeting with the strategic plan-

ning committee helped solidify the

committee’s role/expectations for the

next few years. The PR section of

the bylaws was reviewed and edited

with anticipated board of approval

by end of 2011.

We continue to work closely with

HMC public relations department

with various community articles and

advertisements. Up coming projects

will include developing a Logo Pol-

icy along with exploring the idea of

an Aloha Wagon for new physicians

moving to the community.

Overall the 3rd annual HMCF Golf Challenge was a

highly successful one that was played on a very breezy,

hot summer day on July 31, 2010 at the Waikoloa

Kings’ Course. Every year we get bigger and better,

especially since our very large, hard-working volunteer

golf committee members consists of our Foundation’s

staff and Board of Trustees.

Not only did we have outstanding teamwork from our

golf committee, but we also had a record number of

golf participants, which at 74, was the largest since we

started this fundraiser.

Due to the great feedback from the golf participants,

sponsors, and committee members it was decided to

continue on with the preparation of the 4th Annual

HMCF Golf Challenge in 2012. We hope to see a

record turn-out again with more golfers and sponsors.
