January-February 2017 Volume 30, Issue 1 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE I’m glad to report that the 2017 Hawaii Land Surveyors Association Conference was a success! This year’s venue, at the Courtyard by Marriott King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel, was received well by our members. Our Conference attendees had a great opportunity to hear and discuss very important topics. I would like to express our sincere thank you to our special guest speaker Mr. Matt Vernon, who came from California to give a presentation on the Public Land Surveying System. I would also like to express our great appreciation to all the speakers and vendors who helped make our conference possible. Your support and involvement have always been so crucial to our success. Thank you to the staff at the King Kamehameha Kona Beach Hotel for accommodating our needs and providing outstanding support! This year’s elected board members are: President Clayton Kaneshiro Vice President Christina Seto NSPS Director Joanne Williamson Treasurer Kenn Nishihira Secretary Alika Garo 1st Director Russell Higa 2nd Director Meyer Cummins Thank you for allowing us to serve as the HLSA Board of Directors. We will work diligently to serve the members to the best of our ability towards the greater good for the Association. Lastly, I would personally like to thank our board members who worked tirelessly planning and arranging the conference. Without their efforts, the conference would not have come to fruition. Special thanks to our Vice President Christina Seto, for making all the name tags and Christina’s aunty, Ms. Beverly Villa, who made the beautiful leis for all the speakers. Much Mahalo!! This year’s Surveyors Challenge was conducted by Gavin Hirano of the State Land Survey Division. Gavin is also, by the way, in charge of the Land Court section. The challenge was to review find all the errors on a Land Court Map, which was provided by Gavin. Congratulations goes out to Nick Yamasaki from Wes Thomas and Associates! He found the most correct number of errors on the Land Court Map. Great job!! Also, congratulations to our HLSA 2016 Photo Contest Winner, David Thompson, from Walter P. Thompson, Inc. for the beautiful photo he submitted. He won the $200.00 dollar Grand Prize!!! Honorable mention winners were Russell Delos Santos from Leaps & Boundaries, Jeff Lucas from Walter P.
