Geographical / Relocation

• Issue bigger than the Bioindustry or even the Manufacturing sector

• Solutions need to be led by local and national governments to encourage economic growth, but influenced / supported by the industry

e.g. Expanding life science clusters (Northern Powerhouse, Northern Health Science Cluster, Northern Alliance Advanced Therapies Treatment centre, Cardiff Capital Region (CCR) City Deal)

• Brexit impact: industry to lobby for immigration policies that make it as easy as possible to continue recruiting talent from the EU

How can we address these issues?

Keeping skilled people in the sector

• More competitive salaries

• Up-skilling

o ATAC programme for technician, graduate and post graduate apprenticeships

o UCL MBI training / masters, VISION Leadership Programme

o CPD (Continuous Professional Development) through Professional Bodies

o BIA MAC LeaP

• Mentoring, internal or external e.g. CMC / Innovation Partnership mentoring at Allergan Biologics

• Corporate culture and policies

o Positive working environment

o Innovation driven e.g. organisation of events, promotion of scientific collaborations

o Flexible working patterns

How can we address these issues?

Providing relevant experience and skills

• Apprenticeships, year in industry and work experience placements

• Practical training e.g. university cleanrooms, NIBRT (Dublin)

• BIA PULSE programme (aspiring entrepreneurs and new CEOs)

• Academia and Industry to work in partnership

• Influencing academia content and guest lectures at universities

Note: ongoing initiatives to review industry skill needs:

o AToMIC – Advanced Therapies Manufacturing Industry Community (early career)

o Life Sciences 2030 Skills Strategy (wider industry)

o Digital skills review in progress by MMIP (Medicines Manufacturing Industry Partnership)

How can we address these issues?

How can we address these issues?

Getting more students taking relevant courses by increasing awareness

• Explaining things in 5 levels

• Join existing outreach programs

o STEM or SIP ambassadors

o CEC / EANs (Careers and Enterprise Company / Enterprise Advisors Network)

o School visits and Career days

o Helping community e.g. charity days

• Setup ‘Outreach toolbox’ to educate wider public

• National education and employment website: create ‘Careers vs Skills’ matrix
