The PhD Program

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree program in

the HKUST Business School is research oriented. It

prepares students for a teaching and/or research career

in universities, research institutions, governments,

and business organizations. The program has a global

perspective. The doctoral program currently allows

specialization in accounting, economics, finance,

information systems, management of organizations,

marketing, operations management and statistics.

Individual Faculty Advising

Each doctoral student works with an academic advisor to

design a program o study that refects the student’s interests.

Solid Foundation Training inResearch and Teaching

 The program design eatures 2 years o course work and 2-3

years o research. Course work requirements depend on the

background and areas o concentration o the student. The

student must also pass a qualiying examination and then write

and orally deend a thesis.

During the program, students will be provided with substantial

training to prepare them as eective teachers. This includes

courses in language and presentation skills, teaching practicum

and teaching workshops. PhD student teachers are eligible to

compete or the School’s Franklin Prize or Teaching Excellence

awards.

Prominent scholars such as Nobel Laureate in Economics

 Vernon Smith (let) and the Emotional Intelligence guru Daniel

Goleman are invited to the School’s various conerences and

events.

Program Requirements and Curriculum

  In general, a PhD program consists o our parts:

Each student is required to take at least 9 credits o 

PhD level courses in the major eld. Additional course

requirements are imposed or some major elds.

Minimum Course Requirements

 The minimum course requirement beore advancing

to candidacy is 36 credits, with a minimum o 15

credits o PhD-level courses excluding the common

core requirements. Subject to the approval o the PhD

Director, up to 12 credit hours can be transerred rom a

postgraduate program at a recognized institution.

Major Field Examinations

Full-time students must make the rst attempt by the end

o the second year, and part-time students must make therst attempt by the end o the third year unless a later date

is approved by the department.

Research Paper Presentation

Students have to submit research proposals to the PhD

coordinator by the end o the second (third) year, and no

later than their rst attempt at the major eld examination,

and prepare and present the paper by the end o the third

year (ourth year). The paper must be approved by two

aculty members in the student’s major department.

 Thesis

 Ater passing the major eld exam and acceptance o 

the research paper by the major department, the student

should orm a thesis committee to direct his/her thesis

research. The process o the preparation and acceptance

Structure o the Program

 The PhD program is designed to enable students to gain

a deep knowledge o management in general, to ocus

on a specialized eld, and to provide opportunities or the

student to do original, undamental research in his/her

specialization. Thus, the rst two years o the program

will normally be devoted to coursework, leading to the

major eld examination and a research paper. Ater that,

the student will begin to write the thesis.

Length o Program

 A ull-time student making good progress is expected to

be able to complete a PhD degree in our to ve years (two

years or courses and examinations, and two to three

years or the thesis).

HKUST is home to Asia’s premier accounting program, combining world-leading research, award-winning teaching, outstanding students, and a state-o-the-art curriculum to train tomorrow’sleaders. All aculty have PhDs rom the world’s top research universities.

In recent years, the department consistently ranks among the best globally in publications in leadingaccounting research journals. For example, according to The UTD Top 100 Business SchoolResearch Rankings, the Department ranks 12th worldwide in publications in top three accounting journals in the last ten years (1998-2007).

HKUST is accredited by the Hong Kong Institute o Certied Public Accountants. In 1999, HKUST became the irst accounting program outside North America to win accreditation rom AACSB,

the premier accrediting agency or business schools. In 2003, HKUST became the rst universityoutside North America awarded a chapter o Beta Alpha Psi, the world’s premier accountinghonorary organization.

 The research oci o Department o Accounting aculty members are in the ollowing areas:securities pricing, management perormance measures, accounting and corporate nance issuesin China, East Asia and the US, accounting and capital markets, China law and practice, earningsmanagement, auditing and corporate governance.

 The Department hosts the international Summer Symposium on Accounting Research on theHKUST campus which is now a signiicant event on the calendars o accounting academicsworldwide.

Our PhD program is one o the best in the Asia Pacic region. It aims to train students to become

outstanding researchers and educators. The program is similar in structure and content to those attop universities in the world. The program requires students to go through rigorous course trainingin the rst two years to build up a solid oundation o knowledge on economic theories, statistics/ econometrics, nance, as well as accounting. Upon passing the qualiying examination, the studentormally enters the dissertation stage. Throughout the program, aculty advisors work closely withstudents to provide advice and guidance on coursework and research development.

 The Department o Economics emphasizes both teaching and research, and sees them asmutually reinorcing. Faculty members are encouraged to engage in important research that leadsto publication in leading international journals. Faculty members are also encouraged to applyrigorous methodologies to local economic issues that are o high academic value.

 The Department’s research eort is ocused on our specic areas in addition to the common coreo microeconomics and macroeconomics. They are (1) econometrics; (2) economic growth anddevelopment; (3) industrial organization and theory o the rm; (4) international economics; and (5)China’s Economy.

Faculty members in the Department are highly regarded and their accomplishments are ormally

recognized in several studies o productivity in economics research. In a study o East Asianuniversities published in Economic Inquiry (October 1999), HKUST was ranked number one inEast Asia. In a study commissioned by the European Economic Association (2001), HKUST wasranked rst in Asia and 37th in the world. In a study o publications in econometrics published inEconometric Theory (2003), HKUST was ranked 17th in the world or its publications in three coreeconometrics journals and 26th in all theoretical econometrics publications.

 The Center or Economic Development was established in 1995 with support rom the Department.Its goals are to support research on the process o economic development, with emphasis oneconomic development in Greater China and the Asia-Paciic region.  The mission o the Department is to produce world-class research, deliver irst-rate inanceeducation, and contribute to the nancial developments in Hong Kong, Mainland China and the Asia-Paciic region. The Department now has more than 20 ull-time regular and visiting acultymembers who are actively engaged in research and provide high quality teaching. We also attractinternational renowned scholars and experienced industry practitioners to contribute to our researchand teaching activities.

 The Department has made remarkable achievements since its inception. It has been consistentlyranked No. 1 in research in the Asia-Paciic region, and is currently ranked 26th in the world,according to the FMA-ASU Finance research rankings. Because o the quality o its aculty, theDepartment has quickly gained an international reputation or its research, as well as a local

HKUST Information Systems

 The Department o Inormation Systems, Business Statistics and Operations Management (ISOM)consists o two divisions: Inormation Systems and Operations Management. The Departmentwas ranked 12th in research productivity worldwide based on publications in the top InormationSystems and Operations Management journals by INFORMS.

Faculty members o the Inormation Systems (IS) division are on the editorial boards o the top IS journals and hold prominent positions on the Councils o the Association or Inormation Systemsand the International Telecommunications Society. Our students have gone on to academicpositions in Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, UK, and the USA.

 The research oci o the IS division are:

Behavioral Research: The primary interest is in studying the management o inormation technology(IT) and the use o IT or managerial and organizational purposes. The research examines morethan just the technological system or just the social system; it investigates the phenomenathat emerge when the two interact. Examples include human-computer interaction, useracceptance o IT innovations, IT strategy, electronic communities, e-government, e-commerce,and telecommunications policy. The methodologies employed are surveys, experiments, andield studies. PhD students will need to take courses in psychology, organizational behavior,survey design, experimental design, multivariate statistics, etc. Prospective students with excellentanalytical ability and good prociency in English are preerred.

 Analyt ical and Empirical Modeling: Economics has contributed to the theoret ical richness andmethodological rigor o IS research. Examples include inormation economics, the economics o electronic commerce, economic models or the impact o IT on organizations and markets, and

supply and demand o IT. This interdisciplinary collaboration will help resolve many dicult IS issues. The research methodologies are analytical and empirical modeling. HKUST Operations Management/Statistics

Operations Management is a division o the Department o Inormation Systems, Business Statisticsand Operations Management. The department was ranked 12th worldwide by INFORMS inresearch productivity based on publications in Inormation Systems and Operations Management journals. The division includes two research areas: Operations Management and Statistics.

 The PhD program in Operat ions Management emphasizes model-based methodology andpractice-motivated research. The program trains students to use quantitative tools and analyticalrameworks rom operations research, economics, and other disciplines to study managerialproblems in business processes, such as supply chains, manuacturing, and service systems.

Admission

Prior Educational Background

 Applicants or admission to PhD programs must possess

a good irst degree rom a recognized university or an

approved institution. An applicant’s undergraduate

background is not a precondition or admission. We

encourage students outside business majors, such as

science, engineering, arts and other areas to apply.

 The GMAT or the GRE

 An appl icant must demonstrate his/her capabili ty or

graduate study by obtaining a satisactory score on the

Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or the

Graduate Record Examination (GRE), or other equivalent

means. The test score is not the primary deciding actor

or admission to doctoral studies. However, applicants

with a GMAT score below 600 must have a strong

academic record and/or extensive experience in their

chosen eld to demonstrate their potential. Registration

 The Application Date

 Admission to the PhD program occurs at the beginningo the all semester. The Admissions Committee begins

to review applications in the previous January. Applicants

are urged to submit all application materials (including

copies o GMAT and TOEFL scores) by early February.

 Applications submitted ater this date will be considered

only i spaces are available. As not every department will

consider admission to the PhD program or each year,

applicants should check with individual departments

beore they apply. Applicants will be notiied o the

decisions no later than May.

TOEFL

For applicants who attended educational institutions where the

language o instruction was not English and whose rst language

is not English, a satisactory score on the Test o English as a

Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required.

Tuition and Other Fees

 A non-reundable application ee o HK$150 (or an

amount equivalent to US$20.00) is charged or eachapplication or admission to the University, payable at the

time the application orm is submitted.

 The tuition ee or ull-time PhD students or the academic

year 2008-2009 is HK$42,100 (US$5,400)* per annum.

 The ee may be paid in ull at the beginning o the

academic year, at program registration time or in two

equal installments.

 The tuition ee is subject to an annual review by the Hong

Kong SAR Government. There are likely to be small

increases in the next two years.

Financial Assistance

Postgraduate awards in the orm o studentships

(HK$130,000 per annum in 2008-09) are allocated

to qualiied ull-time PhD students o the University to

provide them with nancial assistance during the course

o their study. Awards are based on academic merit and

the suitability o the applicant or the proposed program

o study, as is the selection o applicants or admission

to postgraduate studies. Recipients o studentships are

required to engage in ancillary teaching and/or research

duties in the department, which supplement their ormal

degree programs. The nature o these assignments may

change rom time to time according to need. Non-local

students should note that they are not allowed to work in

Hong Kong.

Housing

Postgraduate students are housed in two types o on-

campus postgraduate halls o residence. The residential

hall is or single occupancy, the rental is aroundHK$1,700 (US$220) per month. Each sel catering lat

has our single rooms, a kitchen, bathroom acilities, and

a sitting room. Monthly rental or a single room is around

HK$3,000 (US$390).

 There is no on-campus accommodat ion or married

couples, with or without children. The Student Aairs

Oce o the University is responsible or matters related

to student housing. It provides services, on a limited

scale, to assist students in nding o-campus housing.
