Our Organization Founded in 2005, the Hong Kong Lasallian Volunteers (HKLV) is a non-profit making voluntary organization that operates under the Hong Kong Lasallian Family. Members of the HKLV are either graduates or school-leavers of the Lasallian secondary schools in Hong Kong (Saint Joseph’s College (Est. 1875), La Salle College (Est. 1932), De La Salle Secondary School, N.T. (Est. 1965), Chan Sui Ki (La Salle) College (Est. 1969) and Chong Gene Hang College (Est. 1971)). Faithful to the founder of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, Saint John Baptist de La Salle (1651 – 1719), and being inspired by the Lasallian education philosophy, our members would like to extend their service to the Hong Kong Lasallian Family even after leaving school. The mission and vision of the HKLV are:

to serve the needy and transform their lives in the spirit of Saint John Baptist de La Salle; to share faith and community life with the De La Salle Brothers; and to give sound formation to those within and in connection with Lasallian Volunteers.

Annual General Meeting Since her establishment in 2005, programmes of the Hong Kong Lasallian Volunteers have been organized and coordinated by various standing committees. However, with the growing population of the Volunteers and to prepare for the sustainable development of the organization, the standing committee in 2012 proposed that a formal hierarchy structure should be adopted, a constitution drafted and that an annual general meeting held to meet the emerging needs. The Annual General Meeting 2013 was held on February 15, 2013 at La Salle College. Together with the members of the HKLV, the meeting was attended by Brother Thomas Lavin, Auxiliary Visitor of the Lasallian East Asia District, Brother Patrick Tierney, Sector Leader of the De La Salle Brothers in Hong Kong, Brother Jeffrey Chan and Brother Steve Hogan. The Inauguration of the First Executive Committee was officiated by Brother Thomas and the first Constitution was signed as well. A Spring Dinner was held later that evening. This historical milestone was reported in Gateway Issue 45, LEAD Story 86, PARC View (February 17, 2013), Young Lasallians’ Council Facebook Page and the school website of La Salle College.

Formation Trip to Manila An overseas formation trip was organized for the first time from June 15 – 22, 2013 to Manila, Philippines. The objectives of the trip were:

to learn from Lasallians in the Philippines about youth formation, especially on organizing youth programmes;

to enable participants to have a common understanding and analysis of different social issues in order to respond from the Lasallian perspective; and

to strengthen participants’ bonding through their common experience in this overseas exposure.

Apart from visiting various Lasallian institutions in the Philippines, the delegates also paid visits to the Kuya Centre, Bahay Pag-Asa Dasmariñas and Gawad Kalinga Village. Kuya Centre caters to children living on the streets. The Centre provides children with evidence that there are people who care and are ready to assist them in practical ways to re-establish their self-esteem and to help them adjust. The Bahay Pag-Asa Youth Centre aims to nurture children-in-conflict with the law (CICL) in achieving their full potential and to be a venue for them to become positive resources for the church and nation. The Gawad Kalinga Village is an innovative approach that could be the key to solving some of the Philippine society’s biggest concerns – poverty and homelessness. The delegates were deeply touched by the community service done by the Lasallians in the Philippines. The Filipino Lasallian brothers and sisters also showed their warm hospitality to our participants.

Spirituality Day A Spirituality Day was held with the Form One students of La Salle College on June 25, 2013 as one of their post-examination activities. Apart from reinforcing the Lasallian Spirit that they have come across during the Form One Bridging Programme in the summer of 2012, the main themes of the activities were on service for the less fortunate and team building with their peers. It is hoped that, as a continuation of the Bridging Programme, we may provide a comprehensive, wholesome and tailored programme to every newcomer to La Salle College.

Form One Bridging Programmes As in the previous years, Form One Bridging Programmes were held for the newcomers to our schools.

The annual Bridging Programmes cover the fundamental information that any newcomer to a Lasallian school should know. Newcomers were introduced to the life of our founder, Saint John Baptist de La Salle. The basic idea of what Lasallian Spirit was also covered. As a new member of the Hong Kong Lasallian Family, students were also introduced to their new home. It is hoped that through various games and reflection sessions, students would be able to have an idea of the story and life of being a Lasallian. As the students would participate in the Spirituality Day later in the academic year, which may serve as the second part of the Bridging Programme, the programme was specially tailored for La Salle College. At the beginning of the bridging week, students from each class were asked to prepare a 5-minute role play on a particular part of the life of Saint La Salle based on their research. When the students came together in a few classes during our workshops, a wider picture of the life of the founder was captured and integrated.

Facilitators’ Camp The Facilitators’ Camp 2013, which is the second of its kind, was held on August 24 – 25, 2013 at La Salle College. The Camp serves as a welcoming and training for the new members of the HKLV. As our members would serve as facilitators at the annual Leadership Camp, it is vital for them to have more advanced knowledge on various topics within the Lasallian Family. We were glad to have Brother Jeffrey Chan to serve as our facilitator and speaker for the Camp. Input sessions on Lasallian Spirit, Lasallian mission worldwide and the role of the lay partners were conducted. As an organization which emphasizes very much on community, plenty of team building activities were held. A few reflection sessions were also conducted for participants to recapture and reinforce their experience in the input sessions and / or games. Participants were asked to write down their dreams on a postcard, which were later posted back to them, as a finale of the programme.

Christian Brothers’ Schools Leadership Camp The Christian Brothers’ Schools Leadership Camp 2013, which was held on October 12 – 13, 2013, marks the 9th anniversary of the Camp. As the annual highlight of the HKLV, the Camp provides a golden opportunity for student leaders from our schools to come together as a family. It is hoped that the student leaders would help spread the Lasallian Spirit through their words and actions to their schoolmates after the seed has been planted in their hearts.

Organizers and Helpers 24 The Opening Ceremony kicked off at La Salle College on October 12, 2013. Apart from our Sector Leader, Brother Patrick Tierney, we are glad to have invited four of our Principals, Brother Steve Hogan (LSC), Miss Caroline Chan (SJC), Mr. Lee Ting Leung (CSK) and Mr. Eric Ku (DLS), and the Teacher Coordinators of each school to be with us that morning. Brother Jeffrey Chan was kind enough to serve as our facilitator again. Filled with much enthusiasm and anticipation, the programme started off with an introduction to the life of our founder. Participants were then occupied with various ice-breaking games and the Island Tracing. Boundaries among participants were quickly torn down. After settling down at the Salvation Army Bradbury Camp on Cheung Chau Island, various reflection sessions were held to recall and reflect on what the participants had experienced. A key input session on Lasallian Leadership was conducted by Brother Jeffrey after dinner. It is probably one of our key features of our functions that a follow-up game or activity and reflection session would be held right after each key input session so as to consolidate the information that participants had just absorbed. The Sunday morning was a busy morning for every one as the groups were engaged in a rotation of three different practical leadership workshops. After an overall reflection of those two days, all participants, organizers and helpers took the photo of the Human Star of Faith. This photo has brought Lasallians from six different communities into one single community as a family.

Adventure-based Training In order to strengthen the bonds between members of various years for better teamwork and, more importantly, to better equip them to take up the baton as the Executive Committee of the HKLV, a two-day adventure-based training was held on January 25 and 26, 2014. Nine committee members attended the two-day session held at Training for Life at Hung Leng, Fanling. A series of adventure-based activities, which included High Balance Beam, High Wall, High V and Giant Ladder, and sharing sessions were conducted by professional coaches. All participants had fully immersed themselves into the activities and were deeply inspired. They had an even deeper understanding on the importance of team work and that of mutual trust and encouragement. They agreed that the adventured-based training days should be included in the annual plan for the coming years. It not only enhanced the common experience among peers, but also made the strengths and weaknesses known to oneself and their peers. This is can be a good means for selecting members into the Executive Committee.
