(Thunderhawk Gathering of Information for Friday)
September 10, 2021 Hopewell Families:
We have been back in school for almost 4 weeks now. What a great time to sit down with your student and check Home Access Center and Canvas. See what’s coming up, what may still be out there to be done, or have conversations about what they are currently learning! Color Run In collaboration with our PTSO, the HJS Color Run is back again this year. While this is a primary fund raising event for our PTSO, it is even more a community building event for our students and staff. We love seeing all of our students hanging out together and having fun! This year’s event is Friday, September 24 right after school until 4pm. To participate, students have to turn in their donation form by today. They have received this form several times including as late as Wednesday of this week after they watched a video during lunch on past Color Runs. I think this is an event that they will look back and regret not taking part in if they miss it. First Dance Our first dance of the school year, and really in almost 2 years, will be Friday, September 17 after school until 4pm. A couple things about school dances:
• School dress code applies - there will be no changing of clothes prior to the dance. • Students stay after school to attend. If a student leaves at the end of the day, they are not
permitted to return to the dance. • No student may leave the dance early unless their parent personally signs them out. • Cost is $10. This includes all the Pizza and drinks they can handle. • A dunking booth will be available for additional cost - staff will fill the booth. • Please have rides here at 4pm. Be patient - everyone is getting picked up at the same
time. With the help of our resource officer, we will get everyone out safely and efficiently.
Clubs and Extracurricular Activities Many of our clubs began meeting this week. It was so awesome to see our kids get involved in their interests. The Club Card allows students to get involved in several clubs for one price. Clubs that are covered under the Club Card are: Drama, Student Council, Art, Engineering, Yearbook, and Jazz Band. Clubs outside of this list, may have their own separate charge. This does not include athletics. Covid Protocols Thank you to everyone for continuing to remain vigilant in our efforts to keep our kids in school. Mask wearing is tough on everyone, no question about it. It has also allowed me to not quarantine hundreds of kids this year. It will also allow us to return to events like school dances, the Color Run, and in person concerts. Thank you all for making this as seamless of a transition as possible. What a great community we live in!! Take Care,
Jeff Rouff

Grit and Communication
Try to institute an “Ask 3 Before Me” strategy with your student. If they cannot figure something out, first ask a friend, then ask a sibling, then try googling the issue. (or any other “3” ways to find information.) Teachers have instituted type of this for years, and it could help your child build grit and perseverance! If your student still cannot find an answer, it is best to first ask the teacher in person. Finally, students can use their student outlook or Canvas inbox to send the teacher an email.

As students transition back into in-person learning, it could be beneficial to develop and practice different self-care regimens. Many students may face common challenges of anxiety, stress and loss of motivation as the school year continues. Susannah Winters Ted Talk describes self-care taking care of your wellbeing through restorative activities. Winters also digs deep on which self-care regimens could give more feelings of revitalization. For additional information for back-to-school self-care, check out this article on various self care techniques for students, teachers and parents.
