Electricity
• Use energy saving light bulbs. They last
up to 10 times longer than ordinary
bulbs, and using one can save you
around £50 over the lifetime
of the bulb.
• Make sure all your electrical
appliances are turned off at the
plug when you’re not using them.
Some appliances still use energy
when they’re plugged in, even if
they’re turned off.
Hot Water• Insulate your immersion tank to keep your water hot for longer.
• Replace your boiler if it’s over 15 years old. You could save up to £340 a year if you install a new condensing boiler and controls.• Get a hot water cylinder jacket. It could save you up to £35 a year.
ENERGY Energy Saving Tips for 2016Save money on your energy bills this New Year…
• Use the kettle to boil water for cooking,
instead of heating a pan on the stove. It’s
quicker and uses less energy.
• Use a pan that’s the right size for your
cooking ring, then put a lid on it – it’ll heat
up quicker and use less gas.
• Invest in a steamer, or a segmented pan,
so you can cook different vegetables on
one ring.
• For foods like beans or soup use the
microwave instead of the oven –
it cooks food quicker.
• Turn your microwave off when you’re
not using it.

• Use your central heating timer (not the thermostat) to turn heating on and off.
• Turning your boiler down won’t always save money. If you have a room thermostat then it is best to turn your boiler to it’s maximum setting and adjust your temperature using the thermostat.
• Keep your radiators clear. For example, don’t put a sofa in front of your radiator, because it will absorb a lot of the heat.
• If your radiators are fixed to the outside wall, put radiator panels behind them to reflect the heat back into the room.
• Use heavy curtains during the winter, and close them at dusk so heat doesn’t escape through the windows.
• Using central heating is often cheaper than heating one room with a gas fire.
• For properties with high ceilings, placing a shelf just above the radiator helps to deflect the heat into the center of the room rather than it drifting straight up to the ceiling.
• Get a draught excluder – you could save up to £35 a year when you get rid of all the draughts in your house. Film for 4 windows should cost around £8.
• Install insulation. Cavity wall insulation could save you around £160 a year and loft installation could save around £140.
Heating Laundry
• Washing at 30oC rather than 40oC can save you a
third of the cost to run a cycle.
• Try to dry your laundry outside or on a maiden
rather than in a tumble dryer.
• I f you do need to use the tumble dryer make sure
you clean the filters and use eco balls. They spread
out your washing so your clothes dry quicker.
• As tempting as it is, don’t dry clothes on the
radiators. It makes your boiler work harder than it
needs to; try and use a maiden instead.
Fridge Freezer
• Keep your fridge’s temperature around 3°C to 5°C.
• Defrost your fridge and freezer regularly to stop ice
building up.
• Try to position your kitchen so your fridge and
freezer aren’t close to cookers or direct sunlight.
• Get the feather duster out from time to time. When
dust gathers on the condenser coils at the back of
your fridge, it uses more energy.
• Upgrade an old fridge-freezer for a newer model.
Choosing an A++ model can save you around £190 in energy bills over the lifetime of the product.
