HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus): The causative agent of AIDS. It is a RNA virus that belongs to the group of virus
called lentivirus -viruses that characteristically do not produce symptoms until some time after infection, sometimes ten years.
AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome): A collection of signs and symptoms that together are
indicative of HIV infection. AIDS is a disease while HIV is a virus.

The first incidence of HIV was first recorded in the early 1980’s. This occurred simultaneously in different part of the world.
However, HIV was first diagnosed in Nigeria in 1985 and reported at the international conference of AIDS in 1986.
In 1991, 1.8% of the population were already living with the virus in Nigeria and ten years later it was recorded that 5.8% of the population are HIV positive.
Over 33 million people are living with HIV in the world and 67% of this population live in the Sub Sahara Africa.
More than 25 million people have died of AIDS since 1981, worldwide, while Africa has recorded over 14 million AIDS orphans.
In developing and transitional countries, such as Nigeria, 9.5 million people are in immediate need of life-saving AIDS drugs; of these, only 4 million (42%) are receiving the drugs.
Therefore, there is a need to prevent further infection.
Today, in Nigeria, an estimated 3.4 million people are infected with HIV.
Approximately 170,000 people die annually from HIV/AIDS in Nigeria
80% of infections in Nigeria are through unprotected sexual intercourse.
According to 2012 figures, only 1.9% (2,792,611) of Nigerians know their HIV status.
According to 2010 HSS projection 2,527,107 children had been orphaned by HIV in 2012
About 3 in every 100 person in south west Nigeria live with HIV virus
In South West Nigeria, out of the 189,227 eligible for ART only 71,575 (constituting 37.8%) have access to the live saving therapy
An estimated 57,336 people in Oyo State live with the HIV Virus
3 in every 100 persons between 15 and 49 age in Oyo State live with HIV
The 2010 Sentinel survey showed that more than 3 in every 100 person in Ibadan and Saki have the virus.
