AGM Friday 18 th October – Last day of term Welcome Back Everyone at Hitherfield has enjoyed welcoming back to school the children (and parents) in Years 1 to 6 this week and we are looking forward to welcoming the children into Reception and Nursery over the next week or two. I hope everyone has had an enjoyable summer and is well rested for the busy term ahead. Over the summer every classroom was painted and all the communal areas - corridors, halls etc - were also redecorated, so the school continues to look smart and be a nice place for everyone to work in and be proud of. Thank you to the PTA for paying for the new carpets in the Year 6 and 2 classrooms, as they needed to be replaced. Unfortunately, the section of the nature area that has been fenced off is still fenced off. The improvement to the supporting walls, the addition of tons of new soil and the replanting of this area will be a priority for this academic year once we have secured enough funding to undertake the work. As always the school grounds are open until 5pm every evening after school and our families are welcome to use the grounds sensibly. That includes supervising your children to ensure they are safe and are using the grounds appropriately, so that everyone can continue to enjoy the space. Traffic on Leigham Vale is still reduced due to the closure of the junction with Norwood Road. This makes it safer for everyone, but please remember not to stop or park outside both school gates as every child’s safety is everyone’s responsibility - we are one big family. I am very much looking forward to the academic year ahead. You should receive a copy of the Hitherfield Calendar of Events soon and this can be stuck on your fridge, or somewhere equally appropriate, so that you know what is happening. Please do read the weekly Hitherfield Herald as this is the school’s main form of communication to update parents and to celebrate the many achievements of our children. Thank you for your ongoing support for Hitherfield. On Monday 15th July 2019, Years

3, 4 & 5 French club children

performed an assembly. The

show was about people buying

and selling food in markets,

bakeries and cafés in France. The

children from Year 3 sang a song

about the days of the week. For

the grand finale, we performed

French Zumba to a song about

our body parts.

HITHERFIELD GOVERNORS REWARDED FOR LONG SERVICE

SIX members of Hitherfield’s Governing Board were among some 70 Governors from across Lambeth recognised

for their public service with Long Service Awards at a ceremony and reception held in Lambeth Town Hall on

Thursday 4th July.

Our Chair of Governors, Simon Hooberman, one of the longest-serving Governors in the borough with 37 years and

counting, Tessa Crilly, Phyllis Dunipace OBE, Michael Elliott, Graham Lee and Nicola Yarlett (who is also a

former Hitherfield pupil and parent) received their awards and our Executive Headteacher, Chris Ashley-Jones, was

also present and made a speech and announced all the award winners. The following is adapted from the text of an

e-mail from Maria Gabrielczyk, Lambeth Governor Support Officer, sent to all the borough’s Headteachers, Chairs,

Vice-Chairs and Clerks later in July.

“I just wanted to update you on the above event which took place on 4th July 2019 and was the first time ever that

such an event has been held for Governors.

I received over 90 nominations from schools – so thank you very much to the schools that responded.

There was plenty of excitement around the event and it was a great success. Governors were absolutely delighted to

be recognised for their work.

They attended an award presentation in the Council Chambers, where each Governor was presented with a

certificate by the Mayor of Lambeth and a glass plaque by Cllr Pickard. There were speeches made by the Mayor,

Cllr Pickard, Cathy Twist and Chris Ashley-Jones (on behalf of the Lambeth Schools Partnership).

After the award ceremony everyone was invited to the Mayor’s Parlour and the Heritage Suite for refreshments

(buffet, sparkling wine and soft drinks). This was also an opportunity for Governors to meet past colleagues and

have photographs taken.”

The Clerk to Hitherfield’s Governing Board, Peter Compton, was also rewarded for his 30 years’ service as an

employee of Lambeth Council, with most of the time spent working in the Governor Services team, in more recent

years as its Co-ordinator.

Articles about the event have also been published in Lambeth Life, Brixton Bugle and the South London Press.

Simon Hooberman said, “Hitherfield is such a fantastic school – it’s no surprise that so many members of its

community stay with the school for a long time and that we probably had more Governors receiving the awards than

any other school in Lambeth. OFSTED has twice recognised that the school’s Leadership and Management (which

includes governance) is outstanding, and the long service of Governors is a significant contributing factor. We are

all delighted to have been recognised in this way.”

Chris Ashley-Jones added, “It is essential that schools have Governors who are experienced and long-serving as

they can offer the right balance of support and challenge, whilst providing a degree of continuity and a deep

understanding of the school. Hitherfield is lucky to have such a breadth of experience on its Governing Board”

Here is a selection of photos from the event.

At Hitherfield we want to support the children and families in their in online safety. Sometimes children experience issues in online activities, which can at times include cyber bullying. As part of the schools computing curriculum, the children learn about E-Safety, and are closely monitored and kept safe in their use in the online activities in the classroom. We do need the support of families at home to ensure that their online activities are safe for themselves and others. It is parents’ responsibility to monitor what their child is doing online outside of school and it is not for the school to monitor. If you need guidance with online security and education, the NSPCC have a wealth of helpful information and support:
