“The first look gives me all the happy feels every single time,” Lesley Brown says of that moment when the groom sees his bride for the first time. Lesley shoots side by side with her assistant and boyfriend Junie Villarreal and this November the two of them will be having a wedding of their own. HITCHED would like to be the first to wish them a million blessings and a lifetime of magic. PS: Upon reviewing the rolls, Lesley determined that our cover image for this inaugural edition was shot by Junie. What a team!

THERE IS A SOLUTION. HEAD WEST.

FIVE REASONS YOUR OUTDOOR WEDDING SHOULD BE IN FAR WEST TEXAS

HITCHED: FEATURE ARTICLE

#1: THE weather

June is the most popular month for weddings, so it seems an injustice that it would also be the “hottest” month in west Texas. But guess what? West Texas hot isn’t all that hot. The lack of humidity makes the ambient temperature a good ten degrees cooler than the rest of the state, sometimes more. And while others swelter in July and August, we’re enjoying our rainy season. On a good year, cooling afternoon rains often take temperatures back down into the 70s, even 60s sometimes. And don’t worry too much about that rain. West Texas thunderstorms have a tendency to build up, let loose in the heat of the day and move on, leaving behind only rainbows and the lingering scent of wet desert creosote.

#2: THE views

If you want to get married against a backdrop of the “miles and miles of Texas” that Asleep at the Wheel sings about, there’s no better place than Far West Texas. Mt. Livermore just west of Fort Davis stands at an impressive 8,379 feet. Emory Peak in Big Bend N.P. is 7,825 feet. And Chinati Peak south of Marfa is 7,728 feet. You treat your guests to a whole new view on life when you get married in west Texas.

#3: sparklers

There’s no send-off quite like a sparkler send-off. Even if your reception is indoors, you can have your guests meet you outside to shower you with light and love, as you walk away for the first time as husband and wife.

Light and love.

Did we mention rainbows?><Miles and miles of Texas.

#4: THE sunsetsPhotographers know that the light is somehow different up in the high desert mountains - better, crisper, deeper. And everyone knows the best sunsets in the world happen over the Lone Star State. Throw in a few clouds and the mountains, and magic happens every night out here. All you have to do is look west.

#5: THE starsThe Big Bend area is the darkest place in the continental United States. It’s no wonder the University of Texas built McDonald Observatory in the Davis Mountains, or that so many stargazers flock to the national park to see the Milky Way each night. With a little patience and luck, you might even get the wedding photo of a lifetime, set against a backdrop of infinite stars.

JUST THE FACTSNames: Chase and Lauren Myers (née Barge)Date of Wedding: April 4, 2015

Wedding coordinator: The bride’s mother Vicki Lynn BargeWedding location: the Hotel Paisano courtyardOfficiant: The bride’s father Robert Barge

Photographer: Geoff Duncan - www.geodun.com

Welcome party catering: Food Shark served sandwich pockets and cookies. Jett’s set up a margarita bar for us. There was also Big Bend Brewing Company beer. Ceremony flowers: Out West Floral Design made the ranunculus, rosemary, eucalyptus and amaranthus bouquets. The flower crowns were from The Bloom Bar Co. out of Pleasanton, CA, (found on Etsy.) “I wanted very simple, a little sparse, and almost deconstructed bouquets, like someone went outside and picked the flowers fresh.”

Dress: “It was my grandmother’s dress, but I had it significantly re-done by a woman in Lubbock, Maria Chandler. She was amazing to work with!”Make-up: Sandy Maldonado.Hair: Chandra McReynolds.

Ceremony music: acoustic set by friends of the couple, Kallie Key and Mitchell Rambo. Ceremony and reception sound: Marfa Recording Co.Reception entertainment: Scott Keo, a Michael Buble tribute artist out of Arizona. “He was incredible.”

Reception location: The Capri at the Thunderbird. (“Kaki is a doll”)Reception catering: Joe T Garcia’s out of Fort Worth, a family favorite restaurant for the Barges. They served their “family style dinner” which included nachos, tacos, cheese enchiladas, rice, and beans. Chimichangas were passed during cocktail hour. The couple’s signature cocktails were a “Marfa Mule” and a “Myers Old Fashioned.” Cakes: Katy Rose Elsasser. Bride’s cake was classic white with a citrus-ginger filling, and swiss meringue buttercream. Groom’s cake was “black & white” dark chocolate cake with sweetened cream cheese and mini chocolate chip filling, and chocolate swiss meringue buttercream. There was also a birthday cake for one of the bridesmaids (the bride didn’t want her to feel left out) - a naked lemon cake with lots of sprinkles! Decor: Succulents brought out the southwest/desert theme. “I made the planters out of milk cartons, other random boxes, cement, and copper foil.”

Q & AWhy did you choose Marfa/West Texas for your wedding? “I grew up in Fort Davis, and my mom has worked in Marfa (she lives there now) for many years. I love the desert and this weird little town in particular. Chase and I started visiting my mom pretty frequently, and he fell in love with it too. It’s become something of a home away from home/perfect getaway for us (we live in Lubbock) so it just made sense.”

What was the highlight of your wedding? “Having everyone we love in Marfa. It was surreal. It still is.”

What would you do different if anything? “We forgot to buy a guest book...oops! In hindsight, I wish we had planned something to better document everyone who was there!”

Congrats on getting HITCHED, Mr. and Mrs. Meyers! And thank you for allowing us to interview you, Lauren! May you see many happy years together!
