Society and conflicts

The new social stratification:

• In the nineteenth-century Spain there were three different social groups, according to wealth

Upper class

(upper burgoisie

)Middle class

Lower class

UPPER CLASS• The upper class:• Formed by the nobility. Nobility lost the prvileges.

They kept their manor. And they maintained their political influence.

UPPER BURGEOISIE• The upper burgoise:• A small group formed by people who obtained

wealth from commerce and finance. They aspired to nobility by buying big lands.

MIDDLE CLASS• The middle class:• was formed by small landowners and urban

groups in the liberal professions , as well as skilled craftmen and merchants.

LOWER CLASS• The lower class:• Was formed by agricultural workers who either

worked for wages or rented the land in rural areas.

The beginning of the labour movement

• The severe conditions of the peasants who worked for wages in rural areas (day workers) and the proletariat in the cities were a source of social conflicts.

Day labourners suffered: Very low wages. Were unemployed for part of the year. The industrial workers had to work for

long hours (between 14-16 hours). Had no protection in case of accident,

illness… Were not financially conpensated when

they retired. Houses where they lived had no proper

ventilation or higiene.Woman and children suffered further explotations receiving lower wages.

The labour movement• The labour movement started with spontaneous

riots and the destruction of industrial machinery.• Later, the workers started organizing themselves

into associations that demanded improvements in wages and working conditions.

• During the sexenio revolutionary ( a rough period in which there were a lot of politic and economic conflicts) freedom and association and meeting was recognized

anarchism

• Anarchist ideas had a strong impacti in society. In 1870, the FORE (Federación Obrera Regional Española) was created.

• The FORE was a revolution that fought for the rights of workers and was founded in the Congreso Obrero de Barcelona. Bakunin (the one who developed anarchism) also formed part of this revolution. This ideas were extended throughout ( Madrid, Barcelona, Argentina…)
