The idea came from Forrest Mars Sr. of Mars Candy in 1930

Founders of M&M were Forrest Mars and Bruce Murrie of Hershey

In 1941, M&M’s chocolate candies were introduced to American GI’s serving in WWII

Forrest Mars got the idea from the Spanish Civil War when he saw soldiers eating chocolate pellets with a hard shell

Production

The production in 1941 started in Newark, New Jersey

It began with the colors Red, Brown, Green, and Violet

In the 1950s, the Black ‘M” was printed in black & changed to white in 1954
