"Three Rivers Railroad" trip on the Three Rivers Rambler", providing 90minutes of funand fellowship on a wonderful June afternoon for 58 club members and guests. Thisproject was lead by Conner Mathews.

Good program/meeting agenda's resulted in good but average attendance percentagesfor our club.. Average club member attendance this year was 78.8% plus visitors andguests. For the pst five years , the annual average attendance has ranges from a low of76.6% to a high of 80.3% with a five year average of 79.1% In January, Lou Arnoldpresented the perfected attendance pin to deserving club members. Lou noted that twomembers show perfect attendance for just less than a full year: Hal Schmitt, since March23 and Kelly Dagenhart, since April 6. Four members had unfortunate breaks in longperfect attendance records, due to the inflexible requirements for the record: BillCampbell and Bob Craig after four years, Pat Hopkins after nine years, and Dave Copeafter twenty-two years. One year perfect attendance was achieved by Dave English,Serge Fornier, Connor Matthews, and Andrew Yin.; Two years by Bill Martin, CharlieSamuels, and Judy Stroud, 3 years for Mark Denton 9 years: for Virginia Jones. 10years for Charles Jones and Jack Richard, 12 years for Fritz McDuffie and 40 years forBill Sergeant. At least one Rotarian in the world is reported to have 75 years of perfectattendance.

Outstanding program speakers during the year were selected by a group with ChairmanSteve Wyatt and chair -elect Bill Campbell in charge. Programs such as the UN day withthe high school were outstanding. Stop Teen smoking was another excellent programwith teenager Danna Davis from Nashville, Dick Smysers year in review program was atits usual excellent standard. From the Wild Kingdom, Stan Brock came in his lead forRemote medical services. Great talk and the club donated $1000 to the Remote Medicalservice project. Andrea Peterson was great as she spoke as a high school student onthe UN, John Morgan from state government spoke on how do we finance the statebudget, Barbara Hattan from Knoxville college was most impressive. Judy Garnder’sfashion show was a great time for all. Other good programs during the year were:

SUMMARY OF OUTSTANDING PROGRAMS

Dr. Bob Overholt, physician and television personality, offered advice on how to stay healthyand live the good life.

Our own Ruth Pardue gave a hilarious mini-talk on “Trailer Trash Gardening”

Don Lindsey of the American Automobile Association (AAA) delivered what was a surprisinglycontroversial talk. AAA is lobbying for NAFTA truck safety issues because: "membersconsistently tell us they're nervous about driving with trucks". It turns out many in ourmembership are very sensitive to the issue of inspecting Mexican trucks.

John Hoel, Director, State Government Affairs, Philip Morris Companies gave anotherinteresting discussion. Mr. Hoel gave us a brief description of the company's products, what thecompany is doing to improve its reputation and touched on some programs that “give back tosociety".Jack Richard, District Governor of Rotary District 6780 and former president of our club, askedour members "to involve yourselves in at least one aspect of Rotary's workwith participation in at least one new club project." He also asked the club to help carry outRotary's Global Quest to strengthen Rotary's numbers (which had declined from 1.5 million to1.2 million until 26,000 new members were added last year) by bringing in at least one newmember every month.

Landdrom Bolling, the director at large of Mercy Corps International, a nonprofit organizationbased in the United States and Scotland was a guest speaker. Bolling has served as a diplomaticresource for communications between political leaders and governments since the Carteradministration. He discussed many aspects of U. S. foreign relationships, their causes andconsequences.

Mira Kimmelman, a holocaust survivor talked about her experience in Europe during WWII.During World War II, she spent five and a half years in ghettos and concentration campsincluding the infamous Auschwitz-Birkenau. As a result of Nazi efforts, she lost almost her

entire family; out of eighteen family members only she and her father survived. Her experiencetaught lessons about survival and tolerance. "Our role is to teach the young about tolerance, acceptance of difference, and avoidance of hate”.

Our own club member Bill Wilcox, retired technical director of the Y-12 and K-25 plants, spokeabout the Manhattan Project and why it succeeded giving seven reasons for the project's success.

Past RI President Jim Lacey, also Vice-Chairman-elect of the trustees of The Rotary Foundation, gave us many stories and personal reasons to be proud of, and supportive of the Foundation.

DISTRICT ACTIVITIES/ROTARY FOUNDATION ACTIVITIES

Jack Richard reported that there was a great gathering for the 2nd U. S. - Mexican FriendshipConference which was held the first week of November in Pueblo. Jack, Bill Martin, Keith Kahl, and Charlie Whittle participated from our club. During the conference, participants prepared apackage of grant applications which totaled $350,000.Over 150 people attended and during the conference, participants agreed to 36 projects. District6780 committed to 15 of these projects totaling approximately $175,000. Our club committed tolead 3 of the projects which focus on the needs of children.

Top club for annual giving to the RI Foundation was McMinnville. Our club was 6th with$14,638 and was the top club with restricted giving with $6,685.00.

This year’s District Conference was very special for the club. As the home club for the DistrictGovernor, Jack Richard, it was our responsibility to organize and operate the conference. Manypeople contributed but of specific note were: Bill Martin (General Chair), Keith Kahl (ProgramChair), Karl Rapp (Treasurer), Chuck Frew (Registrar) Conner Matthews (Operations), BonnieBruton (Decorations), Rick Chinn (Protocol/Flag Parade), Charlie Kuykendall (Sargent at Arms),Carol Johnson and Larry Beeman (Concierge/Tour Desk), Fred Heitman (Hospitality Room),Dan Conrad and Fred Heitman (Polio Plus), and Ted Fox, Bill Sergeant, Tom Row, and RuthPardue (participation in programs).Approximately, 570 people participated (Rotarians, spouses,Interact club members, and exchange students). Thanks to the club’s participation we won thechallenge with the Breakfast Club. We had 78 club members and spouses versus their 14members and spouses. The president of the winning club was to have his car washed by thelosing president. Rather than forcing them to wash President Ted’s very dirty and rather oldToyota Celica he suggested that the Breakfast Club could donate $200 to the Foundation in ourclub's name. war work project in World War II. Rotarian Bill Wilcox conceived theidea of this Centennial project. Co-Chairmen Fred Heitman and TomHilton headed the project. The cost of the SCCW turned out to be$287,000. The groundbreaking for the Walk was held on February 23, theactual founding date of Rotary International. Highlights

The incoming BOD gathered in advance at Fall Creek Falls to develop goals and objectives and to create a budget, for the first time in recent memory.

At least 18 members attended the Awards Luncheon of the District Conference inKnoxville April 27-28. We won nine awards as noted above.

Throughout the year, our Program Chair Jane Miller and her committee did anoutstanding job of providing us with wonderful speakers.

We supported local children’s groups with proceeds from the GALA. August 4, 2005we presented checks for $1500 each to Girls, Inc., the Boys Club and the Children’sMuseum.

An unpleasant event occurred August 6, 2005 when the Secret City CommemorativeWalk was defaced during a peace rally. Tom and Pat Row noticed that signs andbanners were hung from the monuments. They called several club members whohurried to the site and cleaned up the mess. There was no permanent damage to theSSCW.

Sometimes things come up that are not planned. Such is the case with HurricaneKatrina that struck Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana with such devastating force. Aday later, the levies broke and New Orleans was flooded. Later, Hurricane Rita ravagedthe part of Louisiana that was not hurt by Katrina. Never in recorded history have weseen the total devastation and destruction over such a large area. People in the affectedareas were without homes, food, water, or any of the basics necessities of life.Rotarians in Oak Ridge quickly rose to the occasion and began an effort that was latercalled “80,000 Pounds in 80 Hours.”

This effort started when Rotarian Tom Row called club President Fred Heitman and said“Let’s get a truck load of supplies and send them to those folks.” A mere 80 hours later itwas done. Fred contacted Morristown Drivers Service, Inc., a trucking firm inMorristown, TN, who donated a tractor/trailer and driver for the ride to a destination yetto be determined. Tom started marshalling local resources. The trailer was parked in

Page 18: HISTORY ROTARY YEAR 2000-2001 · large poster of our Appreciation Days for Awareness was ... Polio Plus Bumper Sticker project was ... Our Mr. Rotary was given his "Service Above

4

the Wal-Mart parking lot. Rotarians and other oak Ridge citizens manned the trailer. We procured a large banner which screamed that we were accepting donations forKatrina victims. Announcements were made on area radio and television. Soon, donations of cash and kind began pouring into the trailer area. Dozens of Rotariansfrom both Oak Ridge Clubs worked for two days, Saturday and Sunday of Labor Dayweekend, to accept, sort and load the donations. Our club members were eitherhelping to load the trailer or donating supplies. It was gratifying to see how we allworked together on this project that “just came up.”

People would drive to the trailer and drop off what they wanted to donate. We wouldsort the items into like materials and place those onto shipping pallets, wrap the contentswith shrink wrap and then load the pallets onto the trailer. Often people would drive upand hand us cash and ask us to buy what was needed. We gathered over $17,000 incash in addition to the trailer load of supplies. At one point several of the women whowee working at the trailer came to Tom and Fred and said that there was on thing sorelymissing from what they were collecting and could they have some of the money to gobuy it. Tom and Fred were perplexed until they learned that the items were femininehygiene products. The women took some money and came back with a goodly supply.DG Karen Wentz and her husband joined with us as we loaded the trailer.

On Sunday the OR Fire Department brought one of their ladder trucks to the site

and extended an American flag to the top of the ladder as a way to help folks locate us.Donations continued to pour into the site as Oak Ridgers rose to the challenge to helptheir fellow Americans in need. It became apparent that we were going to fill the trailerthat day but where were we going to take the supply, we had no idea!

Fred and Tom were working the cell phones looking for a place that needed all of thesupplies that were being gathered. The problem was that the places that needed thesupplies could not be contacted because all of their communications were down due tothe storm. Through a Rotary District Governor in Louisiana contact that we obtainedfrom our DG Karen Wentz we talked with the newly appointed District DisasterCoordinator in Shreveport, LA. They were desperate for the supplies that we had. Theywere overrun with people who had evacuated from the storms. They had the equipmentto unload and store the supplies we were sending. We made arrangements for the truckto go there. However, because of the storm the truck would need credentials and amanifest to get through police road blocks. President Fred Heitman wrote a Letter ofAuthorization for the truck to be wherever it was that it was stopped, and they made amanifest and sent the truck to Shreveport. It arrived safely and the supplies were put togood use.

Page 19: HISTORY ROTARY YEAR 2000-2001 · large poster of our Appreciation Days for Awareness was ... Polio Plus Bumper Sticker project was ... Our Mr. Rotary was given his "Service Above

5

By this time the entire community was engaged in bringing items to the site. After themassive efforts all of the Rotarians were worn out and too tired to continue. The OakRidge fire department wanted to continue the effort, and they filled three more trucks andsent them to various places down south.

As people dropped their supplies some also gave us cash. As we were looking forplaces to send a truck we found several other places that were at the edge of thedevastated areas that served as local distribution points for supplies. We quicklylearned that we could not quickly send people what they needed so, instead, we wentthese distribution centers money. This allowed them to buy the items that they neededat the time. We sent money to Baton Rouge, LA; Lake Charles, LA; Francisville, LA; andLaurel, MS. All of these places used the money to buy locally the supplies that theyneeded for their local people. There were evacuees arriving in Knoxville too so we madea small donation to the Central Baptist Church in Bearden that was serving as a localdistribution center.

In October we teamed with the OR Breakfast club to sponsor a Hurricane DisasterLuncheon. Knoxville Mayor Mike Ragsdale was our speaker. We raised about $18,500from this effort. Presidents Fred Heitman, RCOR, and Ben Andrews, RCORB,auctioned the opportunity to hit them in the face with a pie, for $100 each. Foursponsors and 20 corporations sponsored tables at the event. Jane Miller and MarilynMcLaughlin were the organizers and they did a GREAT job!

As a final project regarding Hurricanes Katrina and Rita we teamed with clubs fromBirmingham. With John Germ’s assistance we received a $50,000 grant from theDisaster Relief Fund. We provided about $18,000 from the hurricane lunch that we heldin October. The Alabama clubs also provided about $3000 in direct funds. All of themonies were used to fund a community septic system for a Habitat for Humanity productin south Alabama that had been affected the storm. By installing a community septicsystem it took less area than individual septic systems and the project was to build anadditional three homes on the site that otherwise would have required the land for drainfields.

In total, we provided over $85,000 in cash and a trailer of supplies to people in LA andMS as well as helping the fire department get started with their three truck loads ofsupplies

The Street Painting Festival, chaired by Loretta Friend was held October 7 – 9, 2005.Over $17,000 was raised this year for scholarships to RSCC. This year, 164 artists

participated The many winners in various categories were recognized at a club meetingby President Fred Heitman, and District Governor Karen Wentz congratulated them.

On a cold and sunny morning, December 10, 2005 club members gathered withmembers of the OR Garden Club for our Oak Ridge Beautification Day Project. Weplanted more than 200 bare root sapling dogwood trees all around the city. We alsoplanted about 1000 daffodils in the flower beds at the SCCW with able assistance fromDevrin Kuiper’s children, Amanda and Michael. Later, we received a District SimplifiedGrant of $2000 and purchased ten large dogwoods that were planted at the west end ofBissell Park. .

We celebrated Police and Fire Appreciation Day January 5, 2006. There were 34 policeofficers and two firemen in attendance.

On March 9, 2006 we held the 711 Club drawings. Kim Denton, Dave Mason, BobHightower, Devrin Kuipers, Leonard Abbatiello and Charlie Samuels were selected toname others as Paul Harris Fellows.

Rotary College, led by Deans Charlie Kuykendall and Larry Beeman, started March 30,2006 and had 14 students this year;13 graduated.

We held the GALA on April 1, 2006 in the Double Tree Hotel. We sold 132 tickets andraised a net of $9300 for community service projects for the next year’s BOD.

The Rotary Year of 2006-2007 was a year of challenges for this slate of officers and board. "Lead theWay" was the RI theme and after returning from Malmo, Sweden and Copenhagen, Denmark in Junefrom the RI Convention, this club would be looking for new ways and projects to get everyone involved. The Oak Ridger Newspaper splashed the pictures of the Rotary Presidents from 3 of our clubs; ClintonRotary, Oak Ridge Breakfast Rotary and the Oak Ridge Rotary Club as being the first 3 women inAnderson county to take the "Lead" as presidents of their clubs.

A board retreat was held in May 2006 at Fall Creek Falls over a weekend. This gave the new board andofficers a chance to review and plan the upcoming Rotary year. The board decided to purchase a laptopsystem for the treasurer and new microphones and lapel microphones for our weekly meetings. All ofthese new electronics would enable our club to pass along information to the next leadership team andbe able to report at the Board meetings with clear and correct reports. The new sound system at the Elkscoupled with the microphones would ensure all members could hear the guest speaker and do liveconversations from the audience when needed.

The membership began with 145 members and 1 honorary member. The average attendance for themonth of June 2006 was at 72%. With the use of a new Rotary program (RICAS) our secretary andtreasurer would be able to track funds and attendance of members in a professional manner.

The club membership as of the District Conference in Chattanooga in April 2007 was 141 and ouraverage attendance was between75% - 80%. Our club did attain an 80% attendance several times. As of March 2007, our club had 112 Paul Harris Fellows that were active members. Our Foundationgiving based on 142 members at the $100 giving pledge meant that our club would give $14,200 to theFoundation and give us our Star Status. We did that and surpassed our goal at a club meeting!

Permit Rotary to license alcoholic beverages.Introduce Esperanto as Rotary's second language.Increase per capita club dues to RI by $1.00 a year for each of the next three years and thereafter.Decrease per capita dues.Make attendance by club presidents at PETS not mandatory.Permit "community leaders" to be eligible for club membership even though not meeting any othercondition for membership.Establishes a new type of club membership called "associate membership" who will be excused from allattendance requirements.

Our club gave donations to the following projects:

Water for the Secret City Festival at our Secret City Commemorative WalkUlster ProjectMethodist Medical Robotics ProgramRotary International Rose Parade Float

Our club's theme of "Fun, Food, and Fellowship" inspired the Special Presidential Committee to come upwith some fun and humor to start the meeting. We had some joke telling and funny stories to tell andthen the best "humor" won a prize. This lasted about a month or so and was a pilot idea so the nextleadership team can fine tune or recreate this feature for the meeting.

The year was finalized with the Year End Celebration & Installation Dinner on June 25th. District

Governor Elect, Robin Textor attended to install the new officers and directors and Bill Sergeant gave thefinal remarks as to why he is a Rotarian. A great meal and a social hour highlighted this group of 56Rotarians and set in motion the new leadership team for 2007-2008.

It was my honor to serve and "Lead the Way" for the Rotary Club of Oak Ridge!

Yours in Rotary Service and for the Board of 2006-2007
