    Primary Sources

Many of the most important primary sources are available in translation, but a useful

    compendium is:

Michael Maas (ed./trans.),  Readings in Late Antiquity : A Sourcebook (London: Routledge,

    2000)

    Cambridge Histories

If in doubt, resort can always be made to the Cambridge Ancient History and the  New

Cambridge Medieval History , which are modern part-works with essays by many experts on

    various matters:

Alan K. Bowman, Peter Garnsey and Dominic Rathbone (edd.), The Cambridge ancient

history. Vol. 11, The high Empire, A.D. 70-192 , 2nd edn. (Cambridge: Cambridge University

    Press, 2000)

Alan K. Bowman, Peter Garnsey and Averil Cameron (edd.), The Cambridge ancient history.

Vol.12, The crisis of empire A.D. 193-337  , 2nd edn. (Cambridge: Cambridge University

    Press, 2005)

Averil Cameron and Peter Garnsey (edd.) The Cambridge ancient history. Vol.13, The late

    empire, A.D. 337-425 , 2nd edn. (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1998)

Averil Cameron, Bryan Ward-Perkins and Michael Whitby (edd.), The Cambridge ancient

history. Vol. 14, Late antiquity : empire and successors, AD 425-600 , 2nd edn. (Cambridge:

    Cambridge University Press, 2000)

Paul Fouracre (ed.), The new Cambridge medieval history. Vol. 1, c.500-c.700 (Cambridge:

    Cambridge University Press, 2005)

     And see also:

Thomas F. X. Noble and Julia M. H. Smith (edd.), The Cambridge History of Christianity, volume 1:  Early medieval Christianities, c.600--c.1100 (Cambridge: Cambridge University

    Press, 2008)

    Web-Sites and On-Line Resources

There are plenty of relevant web-sites. Lots of articles can be found on Academia.edu,

http://www.academia.edu, but this is not easily searchable. Currently the easiest way to find

articles on the site is to include the string ‘site:academia.edu’, without quotes, in a Google

search on the topic you are interested in, rather than going to the site itself. You do not need

an account to read articles on Academia.edu, but you do to download them. Nonetheless,

there are very few undergraduates with accounts there.

A web-site that can be unequivocally recommended is Richard D. Wiegel (ed.), De

Imperatoribus Romanis: An Online Encyclopedia of Roman Rulers and their Families,

http://www.roman-emperors.org. As the title suggests, this is a site dedicated to the Roman

Emperors: most of the entries are superlative, having been written specially by current leading

Late-Antique scholars in the United States.

Wikipedia is very variable, but many entries on Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages

were good at time of writing (e. g. those on the Vandals and on the Goths, which also have

useful external links, which provide on-line access to some of the major sources in

translation). Wikipedia is always subject to change, however, and is therefore best used as a

route to other sources rather than a reference itself.

Pretty well every primary source is available on-line, and can be found by a simple Google

search: good places to look are Michael Hart and Gregory B. Newby (edd.), Project

Gutenberg , http://www.gutenberg.org, The Internet Archive, http://www.archive.org, or (for

selections) the Internet Sourcebooks Project, specifically Paul Halsall (ed.), Internet Ancient

Sourcebook, http://legacy.fordham.edu/Halsall/ancient/asbook.asp, and Halsall (ed.), Internet Medieval Sourcebook , http://legacy.fordham.edu/Halsall/sbook.asp.
