The name Appian is synonymous with

engineering excellence. Claudius Appius,

the Roman official credited with con-

structing the Roman highway system,

enabled the Romans to conquer the

world. The superior quality of these

roads enabled Roman generals to dis-

patch their legions to the outskirts of the

empire quickly and efficiently. These

enduring roads also provided easy ac-

cess to trading ports throughout the

world.

The slogan “All roads lead to Rome” was

literally true due to the genius of this

ancient engineer. Many of these roads

still survive today after 2300 years and

the Appian Way which bears his name is

still used by travelers.
