HISTORY OF THE OLYMPIC GAMES
Olympic Games is the largest international multi-sport event,
held every four years. Tradition, which existed in ancient
Greece, was revived at the end of XIX century French
philanthropist Pierre de Coubertin. Olympic Games, also known
as the Summer Olympic Games, held every four years since
1896, except for the years who came to the world wars. In 1924
established Olympic Winter Games, which were originally held
in the same year as the summer. However, since the 1994, the
time of the Winter Olympics shifted by two years on the time of
the Summer Games.
CREATOR OF THE OLYMPIC GAMES
PIERRE DE COUBERTIN
Coubertin much thought over the idea of international competitions in order to popularize the sport.
Noticing the increased public interest in the ancient Olympic Games, caused by loud archaeological
discoveries in Olympia, Coubertin drafted revival of the Olympic Games and made 25 November 1892
at the Sorbonne, the world famous Paris University, on "Revival of Olympic."
For the Games in 1912 in Stockholm, Pierre de Coubertin created the new sport discipline - modern
pentathlon.
From 1912 to 1948 years of Art is holding a contest at the Olympic Games included in the Olympic
program at the initiative of Pierre de Coubertin. [1] V1912 year, under the pseudonym of
participating in the Competition of Art at the V Olympic Games in Stockholm, Pierre de Coubertin
won the gold medal for "Ode to Sport" (nomination - literature) [2].
In 1916, at the height of World War II, Coubertin put on his uniform and went to the front, where he
joined the French army. In these conditions, it could not and did not consider it possible to stay on as
president of IOC. Coubertin insisted on the transfer of authority to a member of the committee “
Godefroy de Blonay”, as representative of neutral Switzerland. A year after the war ended in 1919,
Coubertin again led by the International Olympic Committee.
June 23, 1894 Coubertin efforts failed. At the Congress at the Sorbonne
took the historic decision: "Because there is no doubt about the benefits
provided by the revival of the Olympic Games, both in terms of sports, as
well as international, but these games will be revived on the basis that
the demands of modern life." Also established the International Olympic
Committee (IOC), which Coubertin was appointed General Secretary. It
was decided to hold the Games every four years. After the discussion,
Congress supported the other Coubertin Demetrius Vikelas to host the
first modern Olympic Games in Athens, in a sign of the continuity of the
ancient Games. Demetrius Vikelas was elected president of the Olympic
Committee.
Monument in Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta (USA)
Games took place in the summer of 1896 and had great success.
After their completion Coubertin became IOC president vacated
seat.
In the future, the Olympic movement had to face serious
difficulties, since the next Games -the 1900 in Paris ,the 1904 in
St. Louis - have attracted little attention in the background and
was held simultaneously with the World Expo. The situation
changed since the 1906, when held so-called Intermediate Games
in Athens, and the Olympic Games are the greatest sporting event.
