1836 – INVENTION OF THE TELEGRAPH

The telegraph allowed people to communicate quickly over long distances.

Prior to the telegraph people had to rely on letter which might take weeks or even months to get from on place to another.

This is an early telegraph machine that is still usable.

1876 - INVENTION OF THE TELEPHONE

Alexander Graham Bell introduced the first telephone.

It required an operator to connect the lines.

1969 – THE INTERNET BEGINS

The Internet began as Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET)

The development was funded by the U.S. Department of Defense.

1971 – THE FIRST EMAIL IS SENT

The first email was sent by Ray Tomlinson from one computer to the other.

Tomlinson was the first to use the @ symbol.

The first computers were as large as rooms and had no keyboards, mice or monitors.

Early desktop computers, like this Apple 2 gained popularity in the early eighties.

We occasionally got to go to computer class when I was in elementary school. While in computer class we were allowed to play Oregon Trail.

In the game, you try to get your family across the country in the mid-1800s. The game required you to make tough decisions on when to stop, what to eat, and how much to leave behind.

1991 – WWW-DOT WEB ADDRESSES

What does www stand for? World Wide Web With the launch of www-dot web addresses,

browsing and posting to the Internet became standardized.

Developers embraced open-source code that could be shared to create a greater web of information.

1996 – AMERICA ONLINE

AOL brought the Internet in the homes of 10 million people by 1996.

AOL allowed users to easily check, email, browse the Internet and connect with friends through instant messenger.

• AOL users helped establish abbreviations like LOL, TTYL, and JK.

• AOL required a dial-up modem, which blocked the phone lines.

The dancing baby took the Internet by storm in the late 1990s. It was one of the first mass-distributed videos to travel across in the Internet via email and link. The dancing baby even appeared on television shows on occasion.

1998 - GOOGLE

Many search engines came before Google, but they entered the Internet with a great product.

From the beginning, Google has provided quick and relevant search results.

Today Google does much more than search by key term. It allows you to easily search imagines, news and shopping.

Google as has developed several web-based applications – from Google Docs to Web developer tools.

2004 - FACEBOOK

Facebook was started as a school project in 2004.

The site was designed as a directory for college students.

Today more than 750 million people are on Facebook. That’s more than twice the population of the U.S.

2005 - YOUTUBE

YouTube was launched in 2005 as a site to share videos.

Users share video tutorials, music videos, funny videos, and more.

2007 - IPHONE

Apply introduced the iPhone in 2007.

Prior to the iPhone, Blackberry was the primary data phone. It was mostly used by business people.

iPhone has expanded the use of the Internet to anytime, anywhere.
