History of music video By Kellie rothery
Early History • The music video was first developed when the made music
was combined together with moving images.
• 1940-Scopitone= there was the first of the jukebox with a TV which was available to see the artist that was singing this has now developed into a jukebox without the TV, the reason for this is because now we have internet and TV with music videos, so now the jukebox is just to play music in the back ground when at restaurants or pubs.
1960 Promos • This was when artists started making short and little films for
the fans which started off the idea of getting more fans and fame with creating videos
• ‘hard day’s night’ was created which is a comedy short film about the story of the beetles. This was the one of the biggest short films there was in the 1960s out of 100 great films created in the 1960s
1970s https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_of_the_Pops
• It was traditionally shown every Thursday evening on BBC1, except for a short period on Fridays in late 1974, before being again moved to Fridays in 1996, and then to Sundays on BBC Two in 2005.
• Each weekly programme consisted of performances from some of that week's best-selling popular music artists, with a rundown of that week's singles chart.
• Additionally, there was a special edition of the programme on Christmas Day (and usually, until 1984, a second such edition a few days after Christmas), featuring some of the best-selling singles of the year
1980s • This is year when it was the beginning of MTV, the first video
launched with MTV was ‘boggles video killed the radio star’ • Artists started using a lot more of effects in the video and also
started putting on plots and storylines to their music. Michael Jackson was the first artists to do this with his song Billie Jean.
• Artists started take need for promo for every release
Growth in the years of music • Genre channels started to grow for example there is Kerrang!
Which was a channel for the rock kind of music, top 40 for the pop music etc.
• There was also black music that broke out which was when they started to swear and be more sexual with the words and videos
• Other companies set of channel spin offs
Buggles- radio killed the radio star • There is cardboard settings• A lot of stunts made obviously with string Different to recent videos because the setting is more update,
the budget for this music video is low which you can tell with the setting and how it is filmed
It is the same however as some of the animation for the singers are still used today
The only main thing that is different is how everything from that video is updated and a lot more CGI is used now in music videos
Phil Collins- in the air tonight • Slow paced editing • Set in a simple story • There is close up f the face • Performance shot • There is much used for the setting, mostly in a room The difference is once again the setting shows it is low budgetOnce again the animations and CGI is updated Similarities is that the animation used on the singers face is
used also in recent videos
The cardigans- loosing my favourite game • It is a simple narrativeThe kind of similarity is that the video shows more of the
budget being more biggerThe setting is more modern and the usage of the cars shows
its more recent and developed than the ones I have talked about before
50 cent – candy shop • This is a 2005 song and it is more of a sexual song as in the
video there is more of the women being not dressed as much and the men all over them
• This video shows that there is more development in the kind of video contained because there is more cars involved, more video footage being developed and the budget was big for the cars and the setting of a mansion being big.
