Over the next few years additional barbeques, a guest register, and more concrete tables with donor plaques were sponsored by community groups and families.

On Saturday, July 17, 1920, the dedication ceremony was held with patriotic music, speeches, poetry, and flag-raising. The official name for the park was voted on from six proposed names. The final decision was “Live Oak Park.”

In 1925, the County of San Diego accepted the park land for “park purposes only forever.” By this time, Live Oak Park had become popular for gatherings and auto camping.

History of Live Oak County Park

In 1919, the Chamber of Commerce of Northern San Diego County, led by President

Ben Thorpe, voted to formally establish a park at Fallbrook’s Reche Grove, in memory of George W. Houk. A former president of the Chamber and philanthropist, Houk was instrumental in financing civic projects in neighboring communities. His estate provided matching funds to purchase 7-acres of oak woodland to be set aside as a public park.

About the same time, Denver O. Lamb also wanted to preserve oak trees in the area. He and his wife, Lucy E. Gird, deeded 3 acres of land between the two creeks to the Northern Chamber of Commerce, making a total of nearly 10 acres suitable as park land “for the people.”

The community rallied to develop the park. Lamb and his son-in-law Eric Hindorff worked tirelessly to remove poison oak and to build improvements.

Through the decades the park remained a cornerstone of the community and a well-known rest stop. In the 1990s, the County partnered with the Live Oak Park Coalition to care for the park. The partnership continues today.

On June 26, 2003, the circular picnic tables, the barbeque and registers were given local historic designation. In recent years, an amphitheater for weddings and group activities and a leash-free dog area were added to the park’s footprint.
