History of Adventure Films

Background
• Adventure Films are exciting stories, with new experiences or exotic locales.
• Adventure films are designed to provide an action-filled, energetic experience for the viewers- similar to a ‘action film genre.’
• Rather than emphasis the violence however, they emphasis the journey and the struggles of the main character.
• Adventure films were intended to appeal mainly to men, creating major male heroic stars through the years. These courageous, patriotic, or altruistic heroes often fought for their beliefs, struggled for freedom, or overcame injustice.
First Adventure Film
• Starred Douglas Fairbanks and were silent films and aim for a male audience with the courageous male hero and sword fighting
1930’s• Adventure films that offered tales of British
colonialism and imperial campaigns of
worldwide conquest.
Late 1940’s- 50’s
• Many adventure epics have been based
on the legend of King Arthur, these films
included the hero and a quest.
1960’s
• Adventure films became a real Adventure
as they started to be set in different
countries such as Africa and Russia.
1970’s• This was the time of Major Films such as
Star Wars and Jaws. Where advanced
special effects began and Stars Wars was
set in a digital future.
1980’s-90’s• Modern Day Swashbucklers were made in
this time with pirate theme, although these
films didn’t have as much success as
other an adventure film.
Modern Day• Pirate of the Caribbean, Lord of the Rings
and Re-makes of Swashbucklers films.
• All of these films have advanced special
effects and most have a comedy element.
These also include a range of heroes.
