The History Of Vadodara

• Baroda, is a city with many names. Christened as Baroda by English and Badod by Paris, it is now Vadodara - city of Banyan trees.

• Baroda has over come time to satisfy a rich culture heritage. A city which has engendered the spread of education, fine arts, music, literature and the spirit of traditional ethos. It encompasses architectural treasures of lavish Palaces, Havelis and Wadas built in both majestic and eclectic Indian Neo-Gothic, Renaissance, Victorian, Edwardian and the 19th century style.

HIS HIGHNESS THE LATE MAHARAJA SAYAJIRAO IIIThe Maker of Modern Baroda.

• During the rule of the visionary Sir Sayajirao Gaekwad III, Vadodara came to be recognized as a centre of education, liberal and the science alike. Gaining from the contribution of legendary personalities like Shri Aurobindo, Shri Rang Avdhot, Shri Vinoba Bhave, Ustad Faiyad Khan, Rajkavi, Chandrashekhar and Shri Manubhai Mehta, Vadodara blossomed into a city excelling in diverse fields like education, commerce, culture & sports.

Endowed with such rich legacy ; in the post

independent period, the city became the nerve centre of the chemical

industry of the country. Be it petrochemicals,

fertilizers or plastics, big path-breaking ventures blossomed and became

the leading edge of industrial renaissance of

the State.

Laxmi Vilas Palace

Constructed between Year 1880 and 1890, it is built in the Indo-Saracenic Style.

•The Lakshmi Vilas Palace, since the Gaekwad family started ruling the Vadodara State. It is an extravagant building of the IndoSaracenic school, was built by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III in 1890. Major Charles Mant was the architect.•It is reputed to have been the largest private dwelling built in the nineteenth century and four times the size of Buckingham Palace.

Nazarbag Palace

This is the oldest Palace in Baroda. State Jewellery was

deposited here in 1940.

"Nazarbaug Palace" was Gaekwad Royal Palace in the city of Vadodara, Gujarat state.Nazarbagh

Palace was build in 1721. It has solid gold and silver guns, each barrel weighing over 100kg. It also has a

Sheesh Mahal, a Glass Palace.

Pratap Vilas Palace

This is the former residence of Maharaja Sayajirao III when he

was Yuvraj. 

•The Railway Staff College is the management training institute for the officers of the Indian Railways. The college trains not only newly appointed officers but also senior managers and executives.•The college is currently housed in the Pratap Vilas Palace (built in 1914 AD) surrounded by lush green lawns and designed by C.F. Stevens in the renaissance style.
