History, background The Namibian, founded in 1985 by Gwen Lister, goes unchallenged as the country’s largest, most influential and independent national English daily newspaper. Tangeni Amupadhi took over as editor in 2011. At the core of our commitment to “telling it like it is”, is the belief that Namibians have the right to know, the right to be informed both about themselves and about the world at large through journalism; maintenance of standards of professional ethics, credibility; integrity and trustworthiness; and the ability to report events and express opinions freely without interference or intimidation of any kind. The dominant brand equity our paper enjoys today, did not come about by chance, but as a result of hard work and commitment, which has rooted the newspaper amongst the people of this country. The Namibian is the only Namibian newspaper verified by the ABC, is widely distributed throughout Namibia with 39,125 copies printed Mondays to Thursdays, and 70,900 on Fridays. Being Namibia’s biggest selling daily newspaper, we are motivated by a balance between profit and principle by “putting back” into the community. The Namibian spends close to N$3 million a year on various social responsibility projects.
