Preservation of Miller- Beyer House

description

Beginning early 1890’s, residences in various Victorian styles were built by the prominent citizens on West Union Street. West Union Street became Burke County’s preeminent showcase of residential architecture. The Miller-Beyer House was constructed in ca 1895. This one-and-one-half story frame house is an excellent example of the Queen Ann style with heaped roof and gabled dormers. For a long period of time, the house was unoccupied and deteriorated. Because of substantial damage the house became an endangered property. Mr. and Mrs. Beyer purchased the property and decided to rehabilitate the house in accordance with State Historic Preservation Standards.

Past is not the property of historians –

it is a public possession. It belongs to anyone who is aware of it, and it grows by being shared. It sustains the whole society, which always

needs the identity that only

the past can give.Dr. Walter Havighurst

EPILOGUE

Preservation engages the past in a conversation with the

present over mutual concern for the future.

William J. Murtagh

Page 75: Historic Preservation: Victorian Queen Ann at Historic Burke Annual Meeting 2009

Most environmentally sustainable building is the one

that’s already built. There are many reasons why

preservation is critical for maintaining the spirit of our

community and the protection of our environment.
