OCTOBER 2019 [email protected] www.nztertiarycollege.ac.nz HISTORIC MILESTONE FOR NZTC INDIA A significant milestone has been achieved by New Zealand Tertiary College (NZTC) as a result of their early childhood teacher education efforts in India. Annual graduation ceremonies have taken place since NZTC India’s inception in 2009 and on Sunday 22 September, a decade of graduates was celebrated in Mumbai. A luncheon was held at Le Sutra - The Indian Art Hotel with 70 guests attending from throughout India and Sri Lanka. NZTC Chief Executive Selena Fox, General Manager James Ward and IT Operations Manager Brent Simpson flew in from New Zealand to share in the festivities with graduates and their families. Thirty-three students graduated with a New Zealand Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care (Level 5), Bachelor of Education (ECE) or Postgraduate Diploma in Education (ECE). Special commendation awards were presented to outstanding graduates with Bhavna Rangnani receiving the Most Outstanding Student award and Meherzad Dotivala awarded the college’s treasured Values Award for his commitment to each of the college values of Vision, Heart, Competence and Spirit . Graduate representative speaker Abhilasha Sharma shared her Bachelor of Education (ECE) study journey with fellow graduates, reflecting on how her studies have hugely supported her everyday work with children. “The program complemented what I was doing at work and helped to consolidate that learning quickly and seamlessly. This not only gave me tremendous confidence, it also inspired me immensely to further explore the play-based learning space,” said Sharma. Today we celebrate NZTC India’s rich history which has many stories of students, graduates, and team members touching many lives. We have graduates teaching in the highest quality international schools, graduates who have travelled to international destinations and graduates in remote villages who waited for the electricity to come on each day to serve children in their communities. A DECADE OF NZTC INDIA GRADUATIONSIn celebration of our tenth graduation ceremony in India, we reflect on the ten key moments that led us to where we are today.

Selena returns to India in 2007 with beginning NZTC India steps. Over lattes at a local café, she shares her desire to support children, girls and families in India with local early childhood teacher Pearl D’Silva, who

continues to support NZTC students today.

In the same year, Selena reaches out to support local girls in need by supporting Jagriti Pioneering Society.

A desire to support early childhood teacher education in India results in the establishment of NZTC India in 2009, enabling international early childhood teacher

qualifications locally in India.

PSYCHOLOGY GRADUATE PURSUES TEACHING DREAM IN NZIt was her passion for psychology that originally brought Ivone Yoong to New Zealand, where she realised she could make a difference through a career in early childhood education.

Ivone Yoong’s international study journey began in New Zealand’s bustling capital city, Wellington, when she left her hometown in Malaysia to study a degree in psychology. Upon graduation Ivone moved to Auckland, determined to use her new knowledge to make a difference. She decided to spend some time working in early childhood centres and was touched by the positive impact she could have on children’s days.

“I’ve always had a special interest in the education sector and I still remember my aspiration when I was at school was to become a teacher,” said Ivone.

“After working in an early childhood setting, I was more determined about my passion for early childhood education and that it would match well with my psychology degree.”

After researching early childhood education study providers in New Zealand, Ivone was immediately drawn to NZTC’s strong practical component and flexible learning modes. She enrolled to study a Graduate Diploma in Teaching (ECE), a qualification that would enable her to become eligible for New Zealand teacher registration in just over one year.

Ivone’s passion for teaching quickly grew as she learnt more about New Zealand’s unique approach to early childhood education.

“I love how Te Whāriki guides teachers’ teaching and learning and places an emphasis on bicultural foundation and diversity. Most of all, it highlights inclusive and responsive practice and recognises every child’s right to be empowered,” she said.

Ivone continues to love her new life in New Zealand and plans to extend her learning further with a postgraduate qualification.

“New Zealand is my second home and I love living in this amazing country. I have gained so much invaluable knowledge and have enjoyed meeting people from various backgrounds,” said Ivone. “I would recommend NZTC for students who are looking for flexible modes of learning and practical experience. The practical component was definitely my favourite! I’m also planning to return to NZTC to pursue postgraduate studies.”
