Transcript of Historic Highway segments are finding new Calendar of Events · Remember Constructed between 1913...
RememberConstructed between 1913 and 1922, the Historic Columbia River Highway was America’s first scenic highway; taking full advantage of the Columbia River Gorge’s natural beauty. Upon completion it was referred to as the “King of Roads.” The Historic Columbia River Highway showed America how roads could and should be designed—with nature and scenic beauty in mind.
Revel Celebrate the Historic Columbia River Highway (and its new life as a state trail) along with our partners and sponsors. Look inside for celebration opportunities throughout the Gorge.
RestoreOver the past 30 years, incredible work has been done to restore the Historic Highway to the glory days of the 1920s.
By the 1950s, the initial construction of a water-level route (now Interstate 84) through the Gorge began. The Gorge is a difficult place to build roads, with limited space between the mountains, river and railroad, which led to the destruction of the Historic Highway; leaving abandoned or disconnected segments.
Local agencies and community groups have worked hard to restore existing segments for drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians.
Reconnect
Historic Highway segments are finding new life as a state trail.
Only 10 miles of Historic Highway between Cascade Locks and Hood River await reconnection as a state trail. Five of the remaining 10 miles are anticipated for completion in 2018.
The final five miles of the State Trail waits for funding; costly obstacles to this reconnection include Mitchell Point and Ruthton Point. However, once these last five miles are completed, bicyclists will be able to bike the beautiful Gorge without dangerous interactions with Interstate 84 traffic.

The Historic Columbia River Highway (Historic Route 30) turns 100 in 2016. A “Centennial Season of Celebration” invites visitors from around the world to honor one of the most significant, scenic and historic highways ever built. The Columbia River Highway, hailed “King of Roads,” was officially dedicated on June 7, 1916, with a dazzling affair that drew the atten- tion of the nation and the world.
This year, you are invited to explore and rediscover the historic highway. Take a drive, hike or bike, view magnificent waterfalls and vistas, visit communities along the way, and participate in local events.
The following events are planned as a way to celebrate the Historic Highway’s centennial and educate Gorge visitors about the history of this scenic area. Some events require a fee, so please visit the websites to learn more before visiting.
