Britain & Latin America Latin America’s

independence marked nearly 200 years of attempts by merchants, ministers, and privateers to break into the Spanish and Portuguese empire and promote Britain influence up against the French.

Many capitalists of the early Industrial Revolution were also tempter by opportunities to seal cheap cottons to people in Latin America who have been starved of access to foreign trade.

Britain & Latin America In 1810, the British

government negotiated preferential trading privileges in Brazil in return for its support for the Portuguese royal family during the Napoleonic wars.

Restrictions on direct trade between the colonies and other countries were gradually dismantled during the conflict.

Britain & Latin America During the next decades, the economic

links between Latin America and Britain intensified.

British and continental European markets grew rapidly and the costs of shipping began to fall.

British investments in Mexico expanded noticeably and possessed import interests in Peru, Chile, and Uruguay.

Britain & Latin America By the middle of the 20th century, Britain's

influence in Latin America had diminished. WWI permitted the United States to gain

ground in Latin America at the expense of the European powers.

WWII reduced trade even further and put Britain into debt to the major Latin American countries as well as the United States.

The Second World  The multipolar

world, defined by having multiple centers of power and influence, is the direction some predict will be the future of many diplomatic and political agendas.

The Second World In Parag Khanna’s book,

he explains his view of the emergence of the United States, China, and the European Union as super global powers and how the other countries, he refers to as the “second world,” will off set the balance of future political struggles.

The Second WorldGlobalization, especially economically

with the “emerging markets” of many “second world’ countries, will be the deciding factor of which power they align themselves.
