¡Celebrando Nuestra Herencia!

De parte del Comité del Mes de la Herencia Hispana,

Queremos invitar a la comunidad a cel-ebrar el Mes de la Herencia Hispana del 15 de septiembre al 15 de octubre. La Comisión del Mes de la Herencia Hispana (HHMC por sus siglas en inglés) fue establecida en el 2007

para coordinar y destacar los eventos que ofrecen las organizaciones en la ciudad y el estado para el Mes de la Herencia Hispana. Muchas organizaciones están dedicados a celebrar todo lo que los hispanos han con-tribuido a la sociedad estadounidense en el terreno de las bellas artes, la educación, los veteranos de guerra, los negocios, al gobierno y cuidado médico. La meta del HHMC es pro-mover y conservar la cultura hispana para las generaciones del presente y futuro. Con estos eventos, esperamos prolongar las tradiciones y el espíritu que contribuye a nuestra historia, idioma y legitimidad.

Los eventos durarán un mes entero. El lanza-miento será el miércoles 9 de septiembre a las 11 a.m. con una rueda de prensa en el Old Town Plaza. El evento será presentado por el Acalde Martin Chávez y las organizaciones representa-das por el HHMC, además los oradores invitados, entre ellos la Secretaria del Estado Mary Herrera. Un calendario con una lista de todos los eventos del mes será anunciado. La mayoría de los even-tos son gratis y abiertos al público.

Para concluir, quisiéramos agradecer a las numerosas organizaciones que trabajan juntas esforzándose para crear oportunidades educativas e informativas. También, quisiéra-mos ofrecer un especial GRACIAS a Más New Mexico, nuestro patrocinador oficial de pren-sa. Por su dedicación, podemos hacer público todos de estos eventos en el estado.

Celebrating our Heritage!

On behalf of the Hispanic Heritage Month Committee,

We would like to invite the community in celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 through October 15. The Hispanic Heritage Month committee (HHMC) was established in 2007 to coordinate and highlight Hispanic Heritage Month events that are being offered by city and state-wide organizations. Many organizations are com-mitted to celebrating the contributions that

Hispanics have made to American society in the areas of fine arts, education, veteran af-fairs, business, government and health care. The goal of the HHMC is to promote and pre-serve Hispanic culture for present and future generations. It is through these events that we hope to continue the traditions and spirit that adds to our unique history, language and legacy.

The month-long events will begin with a press-conference kickoff event on Wednes-day, September 9, at 11 a.m. in Old Town Plaza. The event will be hosted by Mayor Mar-tin Chávez and the organizations represented on the HHMC, along with invited speakers including Secretary of State Mary Herrera. A calendar listing the month long events will be

unveiled. Most events are open and free to the public.

On a final note, we would like to thank the many organizations that are working together to provide a unified effort to create education-al and informational opportunities. We would also like to extend a special Gracias to MAS New Mexico who is our official media spon-sor. It is through their commitment that we are able to publicize all of these events throughout the state.

H I S P A N I C H E R I T A G E M O N T H Each year from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month to

honor the rich cultural, historical, political and scientific achievements members of the Hispanic community have contributed to our great nation. The month honors the impact U.S. citizens with ancestral ties to Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America have had on our society.

The first Hispanic Heritage Week was instated by President Lyndon Johnson in 1968, and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan 20 years later to span an entire month.

The month kicks off on the day of independence of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Hon-duras and Nicaragua, which is followed by Mexico’s Independence Day on Sept. 16 and Chile’s Independence Day on Sept. 18. The month also spans over Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, on Oct. 13.

Hispana Nacional para honrar los logros culturales, históricos, políticos y científicos que miembros de la co-munidad hispana han contribuido en nuestra gran nación. CNM Hispanic Heritage Day CelebrationQué: Our goal is to provide educational information to approximately 500 visitors. CNM students, members of the Albuquerque community and students from APS schools are invited to attend. Come learn about the opportunities CNM has for you, including; English as a Second Language classes, GED courses, high school dual credit, associate degree programs, certificate programs and distance learning classes that allow you to take class anywhere you have a computer. Translators will be available to inform you on how to register for upcoming classes. We will have many organizations offering services to the Hispanic community, as well as great artists interpreting Latin American and Mexican music representing our Hispanic Heritage.

Nuestro objetivo es proveer información educativa para unos 500 visitantes. Estudiantes de CNM, miembros de la comunidad de Albuquerque y estudiantes de APS están invitados a asistir. Signed posters of the cookbook cover will also be available for purchase as well as a chance for a hot air balloon ride.

Alianza, la Alianza Latina Nacional para Erradicar la Violencia Doméstica, lanzará su libro nacional de recetas de cocina titulado Remembering the Sabores of My Cocina, en reconocimiento del Mes de Conciencia de Violencia Doméstica (octubre). Albuquerque — Después de 40 años de proveer una comunidad de apoyo para los es-tudiantes hispanos, latinos, chicanos, El Centro de la Raza en la Universidad de Nuevo México (UNM) está preparándose para 40 años más.

En 1968, un grupo de estudiantes preocu-pados empezó reunirse formalmente para en-contrar una forma de contrarrestar los índices de abandono para estudiantes minoritarios.

“Queríamos aumentar los números, pero queríamos que los chicanos que llegaban a la UNM pudieran ser chicanos y aún poder ser profesionales”, comentó Arturo Sandoval en un documental en el sitio oficial del Centro de la Raza.

“Creó un camino para los chicanos para conseguir educación superior y aún ser com-pletamente chicanos”, comentó en el docu-mental.

Sandoval estuvo entre el grupo original de estudiantes que formó el grupo United Mexican American Students y empujó para programa de estudios chicanos. Desde esos difíciles inicios, la organización ha crecido, cambiando nom-bres y desarrollando en un centro total y siste-ma de apoyo para estudiantes que necesiten un lugar donde pueden sentirse en casa, de-bajo del nombre El Centro de la Raza.

La organización ha crecido de una oper-ación de un director con un asistente admin-istrativo y unos cuantos trabajadores estudi-antes a una comunidad de alcance y centro de servicio estudiantiles con siete miembros del personal trabajando bajo la guía de la actual directora Verónica Méndez-Cruz, ofreciendo apoyo a los estudiantes, ser mentores, con-sejo académico y de carrera, becas y ayuda financiera, eventos comunitarios y alcance de secundaria, programas culturales e incluso oportunidades de trabajo.

Albuquerque — After 40 years of providing a community of sup-port for Hispanic, Latino and Chi-cano students, El Centro de la Raza at the University of New Mexico is gearing up for 40 more years.

In 1968, a group of concerned undergraduates started meeting formally to counter the dismal dropout rates of minority students by giving them a resource to guide them through all aspects of uni-versity life.

“We wanted to increase the numbers, but we wanted Chicanos who showed up at UNM to be able to be Chicanos and still be profes-sionals,” said Arturo Sandoval in a documentary about the history of El Centro.

“It created a path for Chicanos to get higher education and still be completely Chicanos,” he said, in the documentary.

Sandoval was among the origi-nal group of students who formed United Mexican American Stu-dents and pushed for a Chicano studies program.

Since those rough beginnings, the organization has grown and developed into a comprehensive center and support system for all students who need a place where they can be themselves, under the name El Centro de la Raza.

The organization which has grown from a one-director opera-tion with an administrative assis-tant and a few student workers to

a community outreach and student services center with seven staff members working under the guid-ance of current director Veronica Mendez-Cruz.

It offers student advocacy, peer mentoring, academic and career advisement, scholarships and fi-nancial aid, community events, high school outreach, cultural programs and even employment opportunities.

But more than student ser-vices, El Centro has come to be a place that most describe as a home away from home, where students can find a place to study, to get advice or use just the kitch-en and eat lunch with friends.

“I used to just hang out here all the time,” said Mario Chávez, a mar-keting student who volunteers with El Centro. “It was basically home.”

Christopher Smith López, who is now student programs special-ist, found El Centro at a moment of crisis.

“I hit a major wall in my per-sonal life and I didn’t know where to go,” he said.

So staff helped him withdraw from his classes and figure out a strategy to graduate.

Since that day, Smith López has become a part of the center, working “to set forth a path for the future generation that’s coming.”

El Centro invites the communi-ty to celebrate their 40th anniver-sary in a two-day symposium with workshops, presentations and a career fair on Oct. 5-6. For more information see the calendar.
