    >An audio cassette recording of thesupplications in English and Arabic will beavailable in the near future, Alla>h

willing.{ May Alla>h reward those who havehelped in this endeavour, amongst them:Dr. V. Abdur-Rahi>m (lecturer at theIslamic University Madinah), Dr. Ar (from the khidmatus-Sunnah department Islamic UniversityMadinah), and all those students from theUniversity of Madi>nah who contributedone way or another in both editions of

this translation.Scholars have varied opinions on theunderstanding of some of thesupplications. In some of these cases wehave cited an opinion which we consideris the most accurate, in other cases, when the opinions are in our view, ofequal strength, we have cited oneopinion only.

    Translators note

Firstly, thanks and acknowledgmentought to be bestowed upon BrotherRiya>d}huddi>n for his diligent work in

translating the piece before us. By thewill of Alla>h, the draft of his work waslost, which is when the present translatorundertook this noble assignment.Secondly, it should be stated clearly andemphatically from the onset that thistranslation in no way encourages theEnglish speaking Muslim to take tosupplicating and remembering his Lord inthe English tongue as regards the

following supplications, since the subjectmatter here stems from the Qura>n andthe Sunnah. Care should be taken toadhere to the language in which it wasrevealed, i.e. the eloquent tongue of theArabs. Instead, what we desire is topresent the English reader with anapproximation of the meaning of theoriginal, in the hope that through doingso, he may come to an improved statetowards worshipping his Lord.

Our Lord, if we have been able in these

ourselves and the wickedness of our owndeeds. Whomever Alla>h guides, cannotbe lead astray and whomever Alla>hmisguides, none can guide him. I bearwitness that none has the right to beworshipped except Alla>h, alone withoutassociate, and I bear witness thatMuh}ammad is His slave and Messenger.Alla>h praise him and send peace uponhim, his household, and his companionsand all those who follow them inrighteousness till the Day of Reckoning. The following pages are a selection frommy book entitled:

accordingly I have limited myself to citingbut a few of the sources contained in theoriginal work. Thus, all those wishingfurther information regarding a particularcompanion or a particular narration,

Furthermore, may all who read itfind benefit, as well as those who print itor in some way serve to publicize it.Indeed Alla>h is able to actualise that

and is patron to such. O Alla>h, sendprayers upon the Prophet Muh}ammad, his household, and his companions andall those who follow them inrighteousness till the Day of Reckoning.

And bring your Lord to remembrance inyour [very] soul, with humility andremember without loudness in words, inthe mornings and evenings; and be not ofthose who are unheedful.5

The Prophet said: The comparison ofthe one who remembers Alla>h and theone who does not remember Alla>h, islike that of the living and the dead.6

He also said: Should I not inform you ofthe best of deeds, and the mostsanctifying of deeds before your Lord, which does more to raise your positions[with Him], and are better for you thanthe disbursement of gold and money orbattle with the enemy? They [thecompanions] said: Indeed! Inform us. Hethen said: Remembrance of Alla>h.7

    The Prophet also said: Alla>h 5 Al-Aara>f: 205.6 Al-Bukha>ri> with Al-Fath} 11/208 and Muslim 1/539 with

the following wording: The comparison of the house in whichAlla>h is mentioned and the house in which Alla>h is not

says: Indeed I am as My servantpresumes Me to be, and I am with himwhen he remembers Me, so if heremembers Me to himself I rememberhim to Myself, and if he remembers Me

amongst a company I remember himamongst a company greater than it, andif he draws near to Me the span of a handI draw near to him the span of an arm,and if he draws near to Me the span of anarm I draw near to him the span of twooutstretched arms, and if he takes a steptowards Me I hastily step towards him.8

On the authority of Abdulla>h Ibn Busr :A man said to the Prophet , O

Messenger of Alla>h, The rites of Isla>mare much for me, so tell me of somethingthat I might hold fast to. He said, Letnot your tongue cease from theremembrance of Alla>h.9

The Prophet also said, Whoever recitesa letter of Alla>hs Book has for it, amerit and ten more like it, not to say thatalif, la>m, mi>m are one letter but8 Al-Bukha>ri> 8/171 and Muslim 4/2061, this specific wording

    is related by Al-Bukha>ri>.9 At-Tirmiz}i> 5/458 and Ibn Ma>jah 2/1246, see: S{ah}i>h}At-Tirmiz}i> 3/139 and S{ah}i>h} Ibn Ma>jah 2/317.

    rather alif is a letter, la>m is a letter andmi>m is a letter.10

Uqbah Ibn Amir, may Alla>h be pleasedwith him, relates that Alla>hs Messenger

came out when we were in aJ-Iuffah andsaid: Are there any of you who wouldwish to go every day to Butha>n oral-Aqi>q [i.e., the name of two ditches inal-Madi>nah] in the early morning andreturn from it with two she-camelswithout incurring any sin or severingrelations? We [the companions] said:We would indeed love that, O Messengerof Alla>h. He said: then you should goto the Masjid and acquire some

knowledge, or recite two At fromthe Book of Alla>h, that would be betterfor you than two she-camels, and threeAt are better than three she-camels, and four At are better thanfour she-camels, and the same for a likenumber of male camels.11

The Prophet also said: Whoever takes aseat and fails to remember Alla>h, hasincurred upon himself a loss from Alla>h,10

    At-Tirmiz}i> 5/175, see: S{ah}i>h} At-Tirmiz}i> 3/9 andS{ah}i>h} Al-Ja>mi As}-S{aghi>r 5/340.11 Muslim 1/553.

and whoever lies down [relaxes] and failsto remember Alla>h, has incurred uponhimself a loss from Alla>h.12

He also said: Whenever a people sit in

a gathering in which they fail toremember Alla>h and send prayers uponthe Prophet they incur a loss uponthemselves and if Alla>h willed He wouldpunish them, and if He willed He wouldforgive them.13

Similarly, he said: Whenever a peoplerise from a gathering in which they failedto remember Alla>h, they rise as if theyhad arisen from the corpse of an ass andincurring upon themselves grief.14

. 23 Alla>h does not create pure evil which does not have any

good or contain any benefit, wisdom or mercy at all, nor doesHe punish anyone without having committed a sin.Something can be good in terms of its creation when viewedin a particular perspective and at the same time be evil whenviewed in another way. Alla>h created the devil and by him,He tests His servants, so there are those who hate the devil, fight him and his way and they stand in enmity towards himand his followers and there are others who are at allegiance

with the devil and follow his steps. So evil exists in Hiscreatures by His will and wisdom, not in His actions or act ofcreating.
