Need for relocation Planning and design stage is currently underway for the new building. Construction will begin later this year. HISD | Milby High School Transition Plan 3 Milby 10 th-, 11 th- and 12 th -grade students will relocate to the Jones High School campus, which also serves as a home for South Early College High School and the Futures Academies at Jones. Relocation plan Milby 9 th -grade students will relocate to Attucks Middle School. HISD | Milby High School Transition Plan 4 Though multiple schools may be located on one campus, each will be kept physically separate. All four principals are working together to develop a strong team and a smooth transition: Milby High School Principal Roy de la Garza Futures Academies at Jones Principal Geovanny Ponce South Early College High School Principal Steven Gourrier Attucks Middle School Principal Dierdre Sharkey Student organization HISD | Milby High School Transition Plan 5 Students will be temporarily displaced for the duration of the construction process, which could be up to three years. Construction will begin later this year. The new school is slated to open in August Timeline HISD | Milby High School Transition Plan 6 The district looked at a variety of alternatives before recommending this transition plan. Swing space options This was the only plan that allowed 10 th through 12 th grades to be kept together in one location. HISD | Milby High School Transition Plan 7 After a thorough review, this option was selected as the best solution for the school community. In addition to being the least disruptive, this option also best suits space requirements and building budget while also allowing us to keep the focus on student safety. Swing space options HISD | Milby High School Transition Plan 8 In 2012, voters approved a new school that would preserve the schools architecturally significant building structure. Preserving the historic entrance limits the ability to phase the project on site in a timely manner. Phasing on site not an option HISD | Milby High School Transition Plan 9 Part of the issue is the overall size of the Milby campus. The construction team estimates it could take as long as four years from the start of construction to phase Milby on the current campus. This extended period of construction would be more disruptive to the Milby community. It would have been cost-prohibitive to use additional portables, which are funded by our construction budget. Temporary buildings HISD | Milby High School Transition Plan 11 Students who live more than two or more miles from their assigned campuses are eligible for transportation services at district-designated stops. Bus schedules will be ready during the week of August 18. Transportation HISD | Milby High School Transition Plan 12 If there is an available location at Milby High School, then the pickup will be located there. Otherwise, it will be at another location. Parents will be informed of this location during the week of August 18. Transportation HISD | Milby High School Transition Plan 13 Most Milby games and practices will be held either at Attucks Middle School or at district stadiums. All sports will be offered. Most sports will be offered at Attucks Middle School, though some select indoor sports such as basketball, volleyball and swimming may be be offered at the Jones campus. Athletics HISD | Milby High School Transition Plan 14 Athletic practices for most sports will be held at Attucks Middle School because space is available. HISD will provide transportation from Jones to Attucks Middle School for all 10 th through 12 th grade students housed at Jones. Athletics
