Welcome to the romance-themed February edition of His & Hers magazine, which is bursting with the people, places (and, erm, shoes!) that have been setting our hearts a-flutter this month.

Highlights of the issue include our sweet table-top shoot, featuring a selection of gorgeous gifts from Liverpool retailers on p10 and our revealing interview with the irreverent Queen of Burlesque, Millie Dollar, from p24.Also this month we’re proud to introduce our new Men’s Style Editor Luke Trevaskis, who’ll be bringing you the most wearable menswear trends every issue. Look out for our first men’s Street Smart feature on p32, and find out why it’s time to ditch that military jacket on p34.While Luke’s been scouting for the city’s best fashion finds for men, Hester Brodie, our eagle-eyed Style Editor, has been finding out how real Liverpool women have been making fresh-off-the-catwalk fashion trends their own on p16.In between all that fashion watching we’ve been making time for some not-too-gruelling research into how best to unwind in the city for our road-test feature on p8. We’ve saved the real pampering for our readers, though, giving you a chance to win a luxury spa break at the Grosvenor Pulford Hotel by entering our competition on p28. Good luck! Emma Hill(Editor)

We bring you a round-up of our favourite celebrity sightings in and around the city...

Nicola RobeRts gets Ready foR Red Nose dayThis month Girls Aloud star Nicola Roberts spoke to His & Hers about why she’s proud to be modelling Vivienne Westwood’s charity T-shirt for Red Nose Day.

Nicola told us: “I am a massive fan of Vivienne Westwood. Everything she does, I follow. I just think she’s amazing and, of course, she’s got red hair!”

Like Nicola, we’re rather fond of a dash of Vivienne Westwood ourselves, and with her charity T-shirts priced at just £14.99 (with at least £7 going to comic relief) from high-street favourite TK Maxx we’re embracing this stylish way of doing our bit for charity.www.tkmaxx.com

Moyo said: “I was delighted to see so many people at the opening and I hope many of these people will now become our regular customers. I look forward to welcoming them back to the restaurant.”www.NovaRestauRaNt.co.uk

HIS&HERS ROADTEST

NICOLA HARRIS’S RESULTS-DRIVEN

FACIALSWhen the team at Nicola Harris

invited us to give a male and female

perspective on two of their best performing facials we didn’t need

asking twice.

Sat amongst a little army of tanned beauticians, cosmetologists and masseurs - it becomes gradually more apparent why men would rather swap their putter for a pedicure.

As males, we account for the fastest-growing segment of the spa-going population - a gure that is showing no sign of slowing down. We are slowly warming to the idea of looking just as good, if not better than, our female counterparts and it is no longer a taboo for a man to go and get a manicure or a microdermabrasion ... and I certainly didn’t refuse when Nicola Harris o ered me a Visible Brilliance Facial to start my day!

Taken from their Elemis product range, the facial uses a combination of deep cleansing, gentle exfoliation and nourishing oils to rm and rejuvenate the skin. Incorporating a range of massages, the tensions and stress of everyday life are released via the shoulders, head, arms and hands, ensuring your treatment is the ultimate in relaxation.

Despite shaving o half of my face in the mad rush to arrive

at the spa on time, none of the therapists bat an eyelid at the

blood-absorbed tissues clinging to my face and I was made to

feel right at home. Before I knew it, I was horizontal, listening to Nessun Dorma, whilst Ruth worked her magic.

With late nights and constant computer use, my eyes are prone to dark circles and wrinkles. Using the Time Defence Eye Reviver from Elemis I found the Red Ginseng, Pomegranate and amino acids helped di use the appearance of the darker areas, making them brighter and more radiant.

The fast-absorbing Macadamia and Lavender Oil in the Post Shave Recovery Mask soon calmed down my shaving nicks, and despite walking in like I had just come o the set of The Exorcist, I le feeling like a dazzling divinity of luminance!

If a trip to the spa doesn’t seem like the typical male destination, think again.

DESPITE WALKING IN LIKE I HAD JUST

COME OFF THE SET OF THE EXORCIST, I LEFT FEELING LIKE A DAZZLING DIVINITY OF LUMINANCE!”

Her Perspective:EDITOR EMMA HILL TRIED THE ELEMIS ‘VISIBLE BRILLIANCE FACIAL’ (PRICE: £75)

A er a hectic few weeks spent working on the latest issue of His & Hers, Luke and I arrived at Nicola Harris’s Allerton salon with the world-weary demeanor and rigid shoulders of those who spend their days (and sometimes nights) staring at computer screens while attempting gamely to meet a urry of deadlines.

To make matters worse, we’d both le for the salon in a hurry, while elding a succession of work-calls, so by the time we were ushered into the cosy waiting room clutching our mobiles, we were hardly a vision of relaxation.

However, once I was ensconced in a chic treatment room and Nicola had begun my Visible Brilliance Facial (one of a range of results-driven Elemis facials on o er at the salon) I felt my tension fading away surprisingly quickly.

The anti-ageing face and eye treatment included a clever micro-circulatory massage technique, which I’m convinced reduced the pu ness around my eyes in a way that no eye cream ever has, and the two-phase Amino Active Mask le my skin feeling clearer and brighter than it has for a long time.

The Visible Brilliance Facial lasts for an-hour-and-15-minutes – long enough for the scalp, neck,

arm and facial massage to work its magic, leaving even this frazzled reviewer feeling profoundly relaxed. I know 30-minute facials (which are also o ered at Nicola Harris) are increasingly popular with time-starved businessmen and women who want to look and feel better fast – we’re all desperately trying to cram as much into our days as possible, so it makes sense that the lunch-time x has become the new beauty holy grail. However, if you can possibly set aside just a little more time for a treatment like the Visible Brilliance Facial I’d heartily recommend it. You’ll emerge looking and feeling a little better than you did before you entered the treatment room and while I can’t guarantee that the feeling of relaxation will last once you leave the salon, the skincare bene ts de nitely will (for almost ve days in my case). WWW.NICOLAHARRIS.CO.UK

WHILE I CAN’T GUARANTEE

THAT THE FEELING OF RELAXATION WILL LAST ONCE YOU LEAVE THE SALON, THE SKINCARE BENEFITS DEFINITELY WILL.

HannaH, 19 This month we caught Hannah coming out of her favourite place in the world… Topshop. Wearing a cute pale pink dress and super sweet heart patterned tights, Hannah has added a leather jacket and boots to add a rock chick element to an otherwise girly outfit – top marks, Hannah!

Daisy, 20another stylista who loves to funk up her girly side is Daisy. This street-smart student has taken a floral mac and teamed it with shiny black leggings and Primark brogues. We love the way Daisy turns her dance-floor worthy leggings into suitable daywear; as all fashionistas know, versatility in your wardrobe is vital.

With warmer days ahead we’re slowly coming round to the thought of dressing for spring. However, there’s still a nip in the air,

so this month it’s all about trans-seasonal chic. WORDS: HesTer BroDie PICTURES: aDam KenricK

Zi Zeng, 19chinese fashionistas are often envied for their keen eye for colour and Zi is no exception. We love her pink jacket teamed with those fabulous leopard print leggings and green Uggs. Her simple but colourful outfit makes a grey February day just that little bit brighter, and if a colourful fashion find can do that then we’re with you, Zi!

gemma, 19Braving the chill with no jacket is 19-year-old gemma. as a student she gets her fashion hit on the high street and admits that Primark is a saviour for budget buys – and we’re in full agreement. By vamping up her Primark dress with well-chosen accessories, gemma adds a quirky edge to her look.

LUcy, 17We diverted Lucy from a shopping trip with her mother for a few minutes as we just had to ask where that jumper was from. of course our hunch was right – it was Topshop! and teamed with those cute high-waisted shorts, accessorized with her cheeky smile and that adorable headband, we think Lucy’s got tran-seasonal chic sorted.

eLLe, 23We loved elle’s laidback style from the moment we spotted her heading towards Liverpool one’s Urban oufitters. a good leather jacket will take you anywhere, and opting for classic converse trainers is a great way of adding edgy cool to any outfit. simple but totally street smart – His & Hers hearts elle!

KATE HENSHAW, OWNER OF KATE HENSHAW HAIRDRESSING.

At the tender age of 24, Kate Henshaw has just opened her rst salon. And business is booming.

Her rst agship salon, Kate Henshaw Hairdressing , recently launched in Leafy Aigburth and was the result of her hard work, determination and vision to create a new salon experience.

Kate started her career in Liverpool and having completed her training she sought adventure and headed to Dubai for what proved to be a very savvy career move. Kate was inspired by her time in Dubai, which gave her a wonderful insight into how some of the world’s leading salons function.

“My Dubai experience was the turning point.” commented Kate. “Developing my career and creativity in such a diverse culture enhanced my vision enabling me to create wearable, inspired hair designs for my clients. I felt passionate about returning to my home city and in my head I had a vision to create a unique salon experience in the suburbs.

“Opening the doors to the salon was a proud moment, but it wasn’t without its stresses or sleepless nights” said Kate “It’s been a steep learning curve, however it’s all been worthwhile”.

“For me, our rst location had to be Liverpool. The city represents the very essence of style and fashion and I’m so excited to be part of it. Since opening we’ve grown through reputation and it seems our Kate Henshaw Experience has really caught on.”

Kate Henshaw and her team pride themselves on the ensuring every client

receives a unique and personal service. “It’s important to me that our clients feel

pampered when they come to the salon.” said Kate. “Working in some of the most luxurious salons in the world has taught me a lot about client experience and I’d like to think that Kate Henshaw Hairdressing has brought a new twist on luxury to the Liverpool hair scene.”

The His & Hers team was bowled over by how much Kate has achieved at an age at which many of us are still trying to nd our niche in the workplace and we predict big things for this rising talent. www.katehenshawhair.co.uk

WE SALUTE LOUISE AND AMY FOR

FEARLESSLY FOLLOWING THEIR FASHION DREAMS.

MOTHER AND DAUGHTER TEAM LOUISE KAVANAGH AND AMY KEATING OF BOUDOIR BOUTIQUE.

When Louise Kavenagh launched Boudoir Boutique several years ago the store quickly established

itself as the place to source quirky and cool gowns and accessories in the city.

Despite launching Boudoir Boutique (which can be found within Cavern Walks) during the economic downturn, Louise had big plans for her new boutique and soon she’d enlisted the help of her fashion-loving daughter Amy Keating to deal with the day-to-day running of the business.

They started out without the big PR and marketing budget, or the army of workers, that their high-street rivals take for granted, but this didn’t a ect Louise and Amy’s determination to ensure that their store stood out from the crowd.

Before long they were expanding their business, adding an extra oor so they could broaden the range of labels they stock and working on the development of their own ‘Boudette’ label.

As their con dence grew so too did their celebrity following; soon the WAGs were spotted clutching Boudoir Boutique bags with pride, then gradually word spread beyond the city that a new fashion retailer was shaking up our shopping trips. Soon Rebecca Ferguson was spotted in-store picking out gowns for red-carpet appearances, then a visit from fashion royalty Zandra Rhodes (as featured in His & Hers last month) secured Boudoir Boutique’s status as one of the hottest shops in town.

We salute Louise and Amy for fearlessly following their fashion dreams, for expanding their business at a time when many were slashing their budgets and for ying the ag for Liverpool every time they’re featured in the national press. We don’t know what they’re planning next, but as this formidable mother-and-daughter double-act always have something interesting up their sleeve, the His & Hers team can o en be found whiling away our lunch breaks on the Boudoir Boutique website. Occasionally we nd out about the next big celebrity appearance at the store, more o en we just spot a great new out t or accessory that we need in our lives. Either way it’s time well spent!www.boudoir-boutique.com/blog

His&Hers Eating Out

One of the latest additions to Liverpool One’s Chavasse Park, Prego is the second of two independent eateries established in

the area by Franco Mercuri. Noted for its authentic Italian menu, impeccable service and relaxed environment, Prego was a refreshing change to the hustle and bustle of this busy shopping hub.

On arrival, we were greeted by our charming waiter and shown to our table where two bowls of the best chicken soup I have ever tasted were brought over to warm us up after our chilly walk across the Park. This was a lovely touch that reflected the warm, friendly atmosphere of the restaurant.

The menu, inspired by Mercuri’s travels across Italy, is said to be a culinary map of the different food regions throughout the country, combining traditional elements to create dishes that showcase time-honoured Italian ingredients and techniques.

The mouth-watering menu made us keen to place our orders and we were

particularly interested to see what sort of flavour the Josper charcoal grill would bring to our main courses. Heading a little to the East, my fellow diner opted for the Coda di Rospo (tempura monkfish with a lime and coriander mayo dip) while I kept to the traditionally marinated Gamberoni Diavola (king prawns dressed with garlic, basil and chilli). Both delicious, we were intrigued to see what the next course had in store for us.

The Josper roasted Welsh rack of lamb with a herb and pistachio crust and the Josper grilled Welsh fillet steak were both cooked to perfection, tender and moist with beautifully pink centres. Complemented by a delicious array of side-dishes and the perfect glass of red wine, as suggested by our lovely waiter, these dishes were certainly the highlight of the meal.

Of course, we all know that desserts play a vital role in the dining experiences so we finished off with a decadent chocolate torte and a macchiato - we were in chocolate heaven! I’m sure it won’t be long before we head back for some more of Prego’s Italian hospitality.www.pregoliverpool.com

Liverpool’s love for all things Brazilian is developing into an all out romantic affair with the launch of Bem Brasil Churrascaria

on Hardman Street. Truly a carnivore’s dream, Bem Brasil is centred around the unique concept of ‘churrascaria rodizio’, where guests have the opportunity to try a selection of 15 different cuts of meat rather than just one main course. Perfect if you find that you have trouble deciding between your favourites!

A tableside mixologist was more than happy to prepare the restaurant’s speciality Caipirinhas right in front of our eyes. Being professionals, we were more than happy to sample the delightful concoctions and the exquisite Brazilian cocktails turned out to be some of the best we have ever tasted.

A completely different dining experience, each cut of meat, marinated and cooked to perfection on a charcoal barbeque, is brought over to your table and carved by one of Bem Brasil’s experienced passadors (meat carvers). The traffic light card system lets the passadors know whether to keep coming back with more glorious meat or to give you a little breather. With a selection including everything from juicy cuts of lamb to chicken hearts, you can stick to what you know and love or take a more adventurous approach. Our personal favourite was the ‘Speciale’, a deliciously marinated beef rump which practically melted in your mouth and the baked cinnamon pineapple which, although not technically meat, was delicious and really refreshing flavour in between ‘courses’.

To complement the meats, we were

A Taste of summerAfter falling for Prego’s Italian charm earlier in the month, Emma Griffiths continued her taste odyssey with a visit to popular new restaurant Bem Brasil.

invited to choose from a selection of Brazilian side dishes and fresh salad that you can help yourself to throughout your meal. Taking advice from a previous visitor, I had a light lunch and kept my side intake low to save room for the ‘it’ dishes on the menu. With everything being so delicious it was difficult to say no to the lovely waiters but eventually, we were defeated by the meat and forced to wobble home to the comfort of our (stretchy) pyjamas.

Well worth a visit for their delectable Caipirinhas alone, Bem Brasil is sure to become a new favourite that we won’t be able stay away from for long.www.bembrasilrestaurants.com

Find out what happened when leading Liverpool photographer and blogger Matt Ford caught up with rising star

on the burlesque scene Millie Dollar.

When Matt Met Millie

You’ve been performing for over five Years. How did it start?I’ve been practicing in my bedroom mirror since I was young, in the style of old musicals that my mother and I used to watch. I never imagined what it would develop into. When I found out there was a whole scene, I was really excited. I thought, hey! It wasn’t just me practicing strip tease in my bedroom at the age of twelve.

wHere does tHe name come from?Jonny Dollar, the forties spy drama, was the first part, but what would go with Dollar? Then it hit me, Millie, short for million. Finding out my granddad’s headstrong sister was also called Millie and my burlesque idol shared my real name was a calling. How else could I take this?

are millie and Harrie tHe same person? Not at all, but one girl blamed her alter-ego for throwing glasses and cigarettes at the audience. You can’t do that. An alter-ego still reflects your personality. Millie is more confident, it’s not something to hide behind, but it’s a confidence I wish I could always have. I’m quite shy really.

It’s a dull foggy Monday afternoon when my interviewee Harrie (better known to most as Millie Dollar), an ex-New Zealand missionary kid, tiptoes through the door of Café Tabac. Before she notices me I can’t help but look her up and down. She’s wearing wellingtons, a black and white striped Parisian jumper and a cashmere red beret which can only be described as war time chic.

This dainty vision is wrapped up in a black circle skirt overcoat, her lightly made up face complete with matt burgundy lipstick looks surprisingly understated, yet charmingly demure.

With her select cult following she still somehow manages to be recognised as her alter-ego, internationally renowned strip tease artist Millie Dollar, curator and lead act at the risqué burlesque extravaganza The Martini Lounge.

I order a mocha for myself and hot chocolate for Harrie, then the interview begins… I first met Harrie in 2006 when we shot a burlesque story. She was studying for an Arts degree, but her paintings of bygone burlesque icons didn’t impress her tutors. Then during a trip to L.A, when the opportunity to perform amongst the greats arose, she decided to cut her losses to pursue the ‘dream’.

His&Hers PEOPLE

wHo are Your idols? The graceful 20s star Sally Rand, and the raunchy 50s star Zorita. She was so wild. Zorita performed with snakes, but one day a snake pissed on her. Instead of toilet training them she taped them up. Unfortunately she kept them taped up for so long they often died. She was obviously controversial and a renowned lesbian, rumoured to have had a relationship with Marlene Dietrich. She was such an entertaining character.

How would You compare Yourself to tHem?I started performing with classic burlesque like Sally Rands feather and balloon dance. That involves dancing inside a giant inflated balloon, quite a feat. However burlesque is bitchy and I kept finding my balloon slashed. Now I perform to songs like Ram Jam - Black Betty, which is from the 70s but very modern for me.

burlesque, put simplY, is stripping. do You tHink tHere’s a difference?Burlesque is for the audience, stripping is one-on-one. With burlesque you think about the full article/routine, lap dancing you would be thinking about, well... just making tips. They make a lot more money than we do.

do You frown upon tHem?Stripping is frowned upon in my industry but it’s just an evolution. Burlesque turned into go-go dancing, then in the 70s poles were introduced and then in the 80s laps. I give all respect to it; these girls get bruised from throwing themselves around poles. Lots of them, like me, see it as an art form. Seeing them as lesser performers is ignorant.

tHeY go all tHe waY to make a living - How far would You go? Probably all the way. I’m not that shy (I wonder whether I’m interviewing Harrie or Millie now?) There aren’t many pictures of early burlesque, as it was illegal to be naked in public and as we’re famous for nipple tassels which weren’t invented back then, it proves something else was happening.

How did tHeY get awaY witH tHis?A blue light signalled the police arriving and Zorita’s marvellously hidden contraption, where she simply kicked her leg back, made sure she was covered up just in time.

Has it ever gotten in tHe waY of Your relationsHips? Yes, it’s been hard. I was in a relationship when I was starting out. He didn’t know Millie so I understood it would be challenging. I knew I had to do it, but he felt like he had to chaperone me to my shows, even outside the UK. When he started becoming a problem with promoters I took a step back and thought about what I really wanted. My current boyfriend met me knowing both Harrie and Millie (smiles).

wHere Has burlesque taken You? Geneva, Paris, Zurich, Milan, Croatia, Amsterdam… many places. The best was L.A. It was life-changing. Apart from being able to learn from the best and developing my act, it made me realise I wasn’t missing my boyfriend. I could see my future. Unfortunately that wasn’t with him.

Millie Dollar will next be performing The Martini Lounge Burlesque Show at St. George’s Hall on 25th February. www.martinilounge.co.uk

‘FATEPOD’ LiverpooL’s Latest dating craze

advertorial feature

When we first heard about FatePod.com, we didn’t know what to

expect – a site where you leave messages for someone you’ve met only fleetingly and hope that fate guides them to you? Was this really going to work?

Still, we were curious, so we enlisted the help of a willing single friend, *Claire (not her real name) and invited her to road-test FatePod while keeping a diary.

We handed Claire a stack of FatePod cards to hand out to anyone who caught her eye. Claire’s challenge was to hand out as many cards as possible to men she found attractive. If Claire felt too self-conscious to hand out cards she could also leave a message on FatePod.com for her potential dates to find.

Day OneKnowing about my new-found way of meeting someone, I leave the house with a spring in my step. I haven’t told my friends or family I’m doing this, as I think telling people would just add pressure. On my lunch break I stroll through the city falling in love with every guy that glances my way, but I don’t pluck up the courage to do anything about it.

Day TwoTonight I’m meeting a friend for a meal; I’ve fancied the guy who manages the restaurant for a while, so maybe I’ll try handing him my first FatePod card. I keep glancing at ‘restaurant guy’, but he doesn’t catch my eye and the moment’s lost.

Day FiveNo-one’s caught my eye since ‘restaurant guy’. However, it’s Saturday night, I’m out with the girls, so maybe a few drinks will give me courage. Halfway through the night I meet a guy at the bar. By the end of the night, he asks for my number. I don’t want to give my number to a stranger, but I do like him. Now I’m guessing this is where the FatePod site is great; I can talk to this guy but give him no personal way of contacting me. I scrawl the name of the club on a card and give it to

him with the words, ‘log on, find me’ then leave to join my friends.

Day SevenAs I’m walking towards my local coffee shop I spot a guy who I swear I’ve seen before. I stand in the queue trying not to look at him, he is gorgeous. He turns round and we make eye contact. I blush and smile nervously. He, on the other hand, smiles like a normal person, grabs his Americano and walks out. When I get home I start thinking about him and before I know it I’m logging on to Fatepod, and scanning the coffee shop encounters from today…. Nothing that could resemble Americano man or me. Could this be my cue to upload my first message and jog someone’s memory. I think it’s about time I gave fate a helping hand... http://www.fatepod.com

Dating on Valentine’s Day – The Ugly TrUTh!

His&Hers relationships

This month Christine Toner reveals the perils of dating during ‘the most romantic month of the year.’

Most people think January is the most depressing month of the year. I disagree. Yes January can be rubbish, the festivities are over, the

diet has begun and you’re facing the fact that those ‘few Christmas pounds everyone puts on’ actually amount to about a stone.

However, January also brings with it the chance for a fresh start. The detox isn’t too bad at all because you’ve overindulged far too much over the previous weeks. And, of course, there are the January sales.

Then we get to February. It’s still cold and miserable, you’ve yet to make any headway in shifting the weight and there’s that day of the year that singletons dread – Valentine’s Day. Regardless of your feelings about being single

for the remaining 364 days of the year, being single on Valentine’s Day sucks, big time.

I’m not the kind of girl who revels in being in a relationship. In fact I’d

go as far as to say I struggle to be part of a ‘we’ and tend to screw up relationships, consciously or subconsciously, before they get anywhere near the point of

shopping trips to Ikea to buy his and her coffee mugs. However on

February 14th even I get caught up in the romance and start longing

to be part of a couple. For 24 hours each year I find myself daydreaming about being so ludicrously loved up with someone we wear matching

outfits a la Posh and Becks and record answerphone messages together like

they do in the movies. I must point out these thoughts last only for that day but still, while fleeting, they are difficult to ignore.

Knowing I would feel like this on Valentine’s Day I decided to do something I thought I’d never do – I let a colleague set me up on a blind date on Valentine’s Day.

Being one of the few single girls in my office the run up to Valentine’s Day was as annoying as ever. The fact is, you could have the most amazing weekend ever planned but if it’s Valentines and you’re without a date then your plans will be met with a pitying “ahh, nevermind”. “What are you up to on February 14th, Christine?” “I’ll be doing a bungee jump in the morning before a quick lunch with Gordon Brown, afternoon tea with Barack Obama and then a night on the town with the Kings of Leon, the Arctic

Monkeys and Liam Gallagher who have all promised to perform a song especially for me.” “Oh, no date then? Ahh, nevermind.”

So this year when one particularly concerned colleague suggested I meet her friend Daniel* for drinks on Saturday 13th I thought ‘why not’? While both Daniel and I may have an awkward/unpleasant night at least we’d be out, looking like a couple, on Valentine’s weekend.

My colleague gave Daniel my email address and he emailed me within ten minutes of getting it. This is very sweet of course but that nagging voice at the back of my mind was yelling “desperate!” at a ridiculous volume. Still, I ignored the voice and replied to the email.

On the day of the date I had none of the excitement date days usually bring. This is my problem with the idea of blind dates. It’s just two people thrown together because a third party thinks they may work well. Still, I made the effort to dress up, shaved my legs (no I wasn’t getting ahead of myself, just standard date courtesy!) and got a taxi to the bar.

Surprisingly it wasn’t that busy and finding Daniel wasn’t difficult as he was the only man on his own. He was actually quite attractive, tall, slim build, blonde (I don’t usually go for blondes but then I don’t usually go on blind dates on Valentine’s weekend, first time for everything and all that).

Trying to give him the benefit of the doubt I thanked him and sat down. We discussed jobs (he’s “inbetween jobs” right now – read: unemployed), football (until he plainly pointed out he found girls who like football a turn-off - nice and sexist there Daniel) and cars. Yes, cars. Actually ‘discussed’ is probably stretching it. It was more like being at a lecture by the automobile industry. While listening to Daniel’s excruciatingly dull thoughts on engine sizes I realised being on a date on Valentine’s only works if you’re on a date with someone you actually like. Being on a date with a contender for Britain’s most annoying man just makes being single all the more miserable.

Needless to say the date ended relatively early (it’s amazing how quickly those migraines can come on, eh?) and I was back home by 10.30pm watching Ronan Keating’s best loved love songs on telly. Still, at least that’s that over with for another year!

i DeciDeD to Do something i thought

i’D neVer Do – i let a colleague set me up on a blinD Date on Valentine’s Day.

Jody, 26 Jody’s vintage leather jacket from Pop Boutique adds a retro feel to his look. He’s dressed for the season with a snood from H&M and a simple shirt and jeans (also from H&M). Also, proving that style doesn’t have to cost a fortune, Jody’s shoes are from George!

SAMMy, 25Given his job, it’s no surprise that Sammy has a keen eye for fashion. We loved his blue puffa jacket from Zegna and his shirt, jumper and cords (all from American Apparel). Sammy’s look is completed with bespoke shoes from Timberland.

It can be difficult when looking for fashion inspiration and all too often we overlook the diverse influences that tread our

JoHn, 20John gives a subtle nod to the long-running nautical trend with his structured black jacket from river island. John’s jeans are from Tk Maxx, his boots are from Burton and his shirt and bag are both from river island.

SeAnWe immediately spotted Sean in his pale grey jacket from river island, nicely accessorised with a scarf and T-shirt from All Saints and shoes from office - a perfect trans-seasonal look.

ToM, 18We spotted Tom making his way up Bold Street with his skateboard, and immediately warmed to his casual style. Tom’s coat and jeans are from H&M, his top is from Pop Boutique and his shoes and skateboard are both from Lost Art.

It can be di cult when approaching a new season to stay en-trend without breaking the bank. As we moved into 2011, the biggest question I was

being asked is “what should I be wearing this season”?

Well guys, walking through the city I have noticed we need to ditch the military. Liverpool is fashion-forward and we should be setting the trends – not sporting exhausted of-the-rack nds.

To stay ahead in the style-stakes keep to clean lines, crisp whites, and muted tones of camel and biscuit. It can sometimes be di cult to translate high-fashion into a wearable out t but by choosing some staple pieces, you can work this style into your wardrobe to refresh your look and forge spring’s vogue.
