The Air Force's core values of "Integrity First, Service Before Self, and Excellence in All We Do" are
already exemplified by Patrick. He is quick with words of gratitude for the many who have inspired
him, guided him, and supported him along the way. His parents are Patty and Brian Joosten.
Patrick will earn a Bachelor of Science degree and then go on for training as a pilot.
Congratulations, Patrick!

March 8 was a thrilling day in Little Chute
when 8th District Congressman Reid Ribble
came to the High School to present senior
Patrick Joosten with an appointment to the
Air Force Academy in Colorado.
The admissions process is exceptionally
vigorous and a very talented pool of
candidates are evaluated for academic
achievement, demonstrated leadership,
athletics and character. They also must also
pass a fitness test and undergo a thorough
medical examination. Furthermore,
candidates must be nominated by their
member of Congress from their home district
and that in itself involves a formidable
screening process. Congressman’s Ribble’s
committee unanimously selected Patrick
and Congressman Ribble noted that
unanimous selections are very rare.

Mr. Nick Rankin, high school science teacher and Earth Club advisor has been recognized
as an outstanding educator among many fine candidates when
he was named a recipient of the 2016 Herb Kohl Fellowship.
Teaching at LCHS since January 2008, Mr. Rankin embraces the
idea of a learning environment structured around growth and rigor.
He asks his students to embrace failure and learn from it. After all,
learning from failure is one of the
crucial underpinnings of the scientific
method. Without it, there is no
science, and that is an important
lesson to learn.
Encouraging a lifelong love of learning, Mr. Rankin also injects
fun into his instruction and assessments. He is recalled fondly
by many of his former students. “What I remember most
about my high school education is Mr. Rankin’s
overwhelming enthusiasm in the classroom. Reminiscing
makes me laugh a little bit—his cheerfulness and energy is still
infectious, years later. I think one of Mr. Rankin’s greatest
strengths as an educator is his ability to inspire students who would have . . . . . . otherwise
fallen through the cracks. His consistently full classes and his additions to LCHS’s science
curriculum attests to his natural tendency to excite students about science”, notes Ashley
Coenen, in the Physics Department of Georgia Institute of Technology.
Setting high expectations for his students and himself, he leads by example, demonstrating
lifelong learning. He has fully engaged with the Professional Learning Community (PLC)
model at LCHS. “I am excited about the added opportunity to self-reflect and collaborate
with my colleagues in a Professional Learning Community. Even in our first year of working
in PLC’s I can already feel myself becoming a better educator because I can share ideas
with my colleagues and we can work together to decipher the best approach to improve
student learning.” His network extends to educators around the state, and even the
country. In May, he will be graduating with a Master ‘s degree in environmental science
from UW – Stevens Point.
“Mr. Rankin personifies Little Chute Area School District’s mission of fostering learning for
ALL students,” said Dave Botz, District Administrator, “where ‘all’ means ‘all’ and Nick’s well
-deserved recognition inspires all of us to continue to strive to make our vision a reality.”
Mr. Rankin, along with LCHS, will be recognized at a regional luncheon on April 16. As part
of this honor, Mr. Rankin and Little Chute High School will receive a $3,000.00 grant.

Students at the Flex Academy met their goal early and surpassed expectations
for the Scholastic 100,000 minute challenge, a reading
challenge for kids by Scholastic. Students logged their
minutes and the goal of 100,000 minutes for the school
year was met in February. That’s 1,667 hours! With our
remaining part of the year, students took on the
challenge of an additional 100,000 by the end of the
year.
Trying out our hand at some STEM activities.
Fang and Dental Awareness Day- Students were treated
from a visit by Timber Rattlers “Fang” Elite Smiles Dental
Hygienists. They were part of a health and wellness day at
the Flex Academy. Students received a special bag with
toothbrush and toothpaste and given information about the
importance of a healthy lifestyle.
The Flex Academy, the District charter school serving grades K-
8, takes an innovative, site-based approach with a focus on
personalized learning, health and wellness education, and
service learning. The Flex Academy now in their second year,
currently has about 60 students engaged in personalized
learning.

Perhaps you have seen some advertisements in
the Times-Villager and advertisements on
Facebook, such as the one at the right. Earlier
this winter, Little Chute Area School District
collaborated with the school districts of
Kimberly and Kaukauna in an innovative
communication campaign about the
important role of public education in our
community. We are fortunate to have great
public schools right here in the Heart of the
Valley. Thank you for sharing positive news
about public education in our community.
Caring for Others and Making a Difference……..

Students at Little Chute Elementary School jumped all over heart disease and
stroke by participating in Jump Rope For Heart in their physical education
classes February 16th, 17th, and 18th. The students raised more than $5,515 for
the American Heart Association which funds research, programs, and
education to fight heart disease and stroke. The students all had a lot of fun,
and the kids enjoyed learning about the importance of physical activity and
how they can play a role in saving lives.
First graders from Mrs. Schlagenhaft’s and Mrs. Zwiers’ class enjoyed having Pooches to Pages come with
their dogs and listen to the children read to them. “It has been a wonderful program,” says Mrs.
Schlagenhaft, “the children love reading to the dogs, and the dogs get very excited to listen to the
children.” The pictures say it all!
Fourth graders at the Elementary School enjoy WIN time — otherwise known as “What I Need.” During this
time period, our students receive reinforcement or extension lessons in math concepts taught in the core
curriculum. Pictured below, their challenge was to use a given number of coins in order to make a grand
total of a $1.00. They needed to use their knowledge as it relates to the value of each coin, and their
addition skills as it relates to adding up decimals. The challenge also came into play when they had to
make dollar using a certain number of coins.

Exploring the Excitement of STEM!
What’s a ‘Scribble-bot’, you say? A Scribble Bot is a motorized contraption that moves in unusual ways! As it moves, it leaves a colorful mark. Fourth grade students had the opportunity to create their own in Mrs. Schulz’s art class in January. The students were asked to create the “body” of the robot using a wide variety of materials. The machine has 3-4 markers. They then added a motor and battery. Each Scribble Bot is unique, because everyone is investigating different methods for changing the variables: the placement of the motors and battery, methods of drawing, materials used for the base, the speed of the motors, etc. This project allowed the students to experiment, explore, invent and imagine. They were encouraged to use critical thinking skills combined with creative thinking skills.
Michigan Technological University’s Mind
Trekkers STEM Road Shows bring the WOW! of
science, technology, engineering, and
mathematics to the hands and minds of K-12
students under the inspirational guidance of the
Mind Trekkers team consisting of
undergraduate and graduate students.
A group of ninety 6th, 7th, and 8th graders
traveled to Northeast Wisconsin Technical
College in Green Bay on February 11 to explore
these exciting “hands-on” STEM exhibits by the
Mind Trekkers from Michigan Tech. Students
had fun exploring a surgery simulator, a
television green screen, making ice cream with
liquid nitrogen, running across Oobleck*, turning
bananas into musical instruments and many
other fascinating exhibits.
*Oobleck is a ‘non-Newtonian’ fluid. That is, it
acts like a liquid when being poured, but like a
solid when a force is acting on it. You can grab
it and then it will ooze out of your hands. Make
enough Oobleck and you can even walk on it
(or run)!

Little Chute Elementary is a very exciting place to work and learn. We have
many goals for our students; one being to use technology to analyze, learn,
and explore. We know obtaining technology skills will prepare our children to
work, live, and be productive members of society. We challenged ourselves
last spring by implementing a program called, the City X Project with our 3rd
graders. It taught basic 3D modeling, printing, and design skills to highlight
creativity in problem solving. Students worked together to solve real world
problems using the Stanford d. school design process along with 3D modeling
and printing technologies to invent, prototype, and test their solutions.
Through this program children learned the value of empathy, creative
thinking, and problem solving.
Through a team teaching approach, Mrs. Schulz (Art Educator) and Mrs.
Zoeller (Computer Skills Educator) taught key components of the City X Project. Mrs. Schulz focused on the
more creative aspects of the project including design modeling, prototyping, and creative problem solving.
Mrs. Zoeller instructed the students using Tinkercad, a web-based 3D design application. With the help of PTO,
D & M Interiors, Mr. Neubert, and Artsonia, funds were secured to purchase our very own FlashForge 3D
printer in order to bring the models to reality!
During second quarter this school year, the 4th graders learned about simple machines so Mrs. Schulz and
Mrs. Zoeller decided to extend their learning from last year and have them design a new “gadget” that
included at least two simple machines. Check out some of our proud inventors below!
“In an ever changing
world, the next
generation must be
equipped with the tools
to adapt, empathize,
collaborate, and
innovate.”

This year’s book fair was run a little differently at the
intermediate/middle school this February. A 5th thru
8th grade classroom got to learn some valuable,
firsthand life skills by working in a job setting. They had a
schedule to follow, kept a time card, set-up, organize,
greet and assist customers, work the register, close down
the book fair and count the funds earned. They learned
responsibility, time management, respect for and listen
to a supervisor/boss, respect for each other as co-workers, money handling skills and proper merchandise
handling skills. It was great to share this experience with the children, the smiles on their faces were an added
bonus! Thank you to all who came to visit and for your added patience with these new workers. Many
classrooms received new books to add to their room for all of the children to enjoy.
