The Gospel presentsa picture of a farmerscattering the seed aroundhim with ample motion, with lots of seeds beingsown. As the farmerscatters his seed, so Jesusscattered his words amongthe crowd assembled onthe shore. He does notsow sparingly butgenerously. The seed ishis message – somethingmore than human words. It is the word of God. The

people gathered aroundhim are the people ofGod, the natural heirs toGod’s message.

Just as the farmerscatters his seed on variedsoil around him, JesusChrist offers the word ofGod to the variedaudience in front of him. Some listeners accept it;some reject it; some areoverjoyed by it; othersremain untouched. Yet,the seed remains fertile. The kingdom isinaugurated in thisencounter between theword of God andhumanity, between themessage of Jesus Christand the people aroundhim.

Our Lord tells us thatthere are four types ofground on which the seedfalls. The first is describedas the footpath. Theground is very hard.

We marvel at thet r e m e n d o u saccomplishments of theBasilian Sisters throughoutthese past one hundredyears of ministry. Take amoment and reflect on thehard footpath whichMother Langevych and herBasilian Sisters faced intheir environment at thetime of arrival. There weretremendous prejudicesand suspicions of theintentions of the Sisters. The beginnings wereexceptionally difficult times.Much was expected ofthem while l i t t le wasoffered to help themaccomplish their ministry.

However, they generouslyresponded to the invitationby Bishop Soter StephenOrtynsky to immediatelyminister to the many anddiverse needs of theimmigrants. Their strongfaith and their determinedwill to serve God and Hisholy Church prevailedagainst the challenges ofa Church which lackeddiscipline and order. TheBasilian Sisters can be saidto have made fertile thesoil of the hard paththrough their sacrifice andservice. We witness thepower of faith lived outby religious women intransforming even thehardest heart in hearingthe word of God.Consider the changinginfluence on lives becauseof the Basilian Sisters’ministry to children in theorphanages, in the manyparish catechism programsthey offered for childrenand adults, in the manyschools in which theytaught, the manyprograms ofevangel izat ion andspiritual counseling offered. Many a hard footpath didnot have a chance to behardened because theBasilian Sisters dedicatedthemselves to reveal theword of God in love andservice.

Imagine the winds ofadversity faced by theBasilian Sisters throughoutthese past one hundredyears of ministry. TheBasilian Sisters nurturedGod’s word in responseto the needs of manydifferent people. Needschanged and the Sistersneeded to adaptthemselves to changingneeds and times. Theylearned to let go of someministr ies whi le theyenhanced their ability to

fulfill others. While primarilyserving the UkrainianCatholic Church, whatprevai led was theirdemonstrated commitmentto minister to all of God’screation. Consider themission of Manor Collegeoffer ing academicformation for people ofdifferent ethnic groups andraces. Saint Basi lAcademy is open to girlsfrom all walks of lifeoffering formation within aUkrainian Cathol icenvironment. The BasilianSpirituality Center respondsto the spiritual thirst ofeveryone who comesthrough its doors. TheBasi l ian Sisters havedeliberately chosen not toconfine themselves toserve only persons of theirown ethnic and religiousidentity. They have chosento minister beyondthemselves. The BasilianSisters have notsurrendered to thetemptation of serving onlyyour own people. Theyhave not al lowedthemselves to become arocky ground which cannotallow for the rooting ofGod’s word wherever it isscattered. They havechosen to nurture God’sword through their livedout ministry to all of God’screation. The BasilianSisters give us atremendous example oftrue evangelization. They

give us example toemulate in the entireUkrainian Catholic Church.

Come and Get to Know Your Clergy And Religious Men and Women!

Very Rev. Msgr. Ronald Popivchak

Pastor of Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, Bridgeport, PA

Training Grounds (Part II)

Seminary can be quite frustrating at times, because a seminarian must place his trust wholly in God and allow our Lord Jesus Christ, and His Holy Church, to shape him into a competent minister and leader. If he does not do this, he can make mistakes, some benign, some serious. There are days when a seminarian just does not understand Father Rector’s orders and creates headaches, such as unintentionally damaging a washer/dryer by placing a clean dryer filter in backwards, or by pouring fabric softener into a bleach chute. Sometimes they get careless, resulting in phenomena like the infamous St. Josaphat smoldering mulch patches (a result of an improperly disposed cigarette). These are little mistakes that make for funny stories, although there are a few times where the mistakes are, unfortunately, more serious. The upshot of this is that whoever wishes to serve God must be willing to place all of his trust in God and in the Church. Due to our fallen natures, mistakes will be made, but we must be ready to minimize their impact, minimize their number, and above all else, LEARN FROM THEM. Because when the seminarian is finally ordained to the diaconate and priesthood, there is no room for error, especially when tending to souls. This is why formation is so important. Just as one expects a doctor to be credentialed with a good medical school education and internship, so one should expect a “doctor of souls” be properly formed at seminary, because the damage done to a soul can be catastrophic for both the priest and the soul that is damaged. May we all pray for our seminarians and clergy that God guide them in all they do, and that they have the grace to let God guide their steps all their days!

The Entrance of the Theotokos into the Temple

As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village wherea woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sistercalled Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. ButMartha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. Shecame to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left meto do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” “Martha, Martha,” theLord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but fewthings are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” As Jesus was saying these things,a woman in the crowd called out, “Blessed is the mother who gave youbirth and nursed you.” He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hearthe word of God and obey it.” (Ëê 10, 38-42; 11, 27-28)

The Feast of the Entrance into the Temple of Our Most Holy Lady the Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary iscelebrated on November 21 each year. The Feast commemorates when as a young child, the Virgin Maryentered the Temple in Jerusalem.

The birth and early life of the Virgin Mary is not recorded in the Gospels or other books of the New Testament, however this information can be found in a work dating from the second century known as the Book of Jamesor Protevangelion.

When Mary was three years old, Joachim and Anna decided that the time had come to fulfill their promiseand to offer her to the Lord. Joachim gathered the young girls of the neighborhood to form an escort, andhe made them go in front of Mary, carrying torches. Captivated by the torches, the young child followedjoyfully to the Temple, not once looking back at her parents nor weeping as she was parted from them.

The holy Virgin ran toward the Temple, overtaking her attendant maidens and threw herself into the arms ofthe High Priest Zacharias, who was waiting for her at the gate of the Temple with the elders. Zacharias blessedher saying, “It is in you that He has glorified your name in every generation. It is in you that He will revealthe Redemption that He has prepared for His people in the last days.”

Then, Zacharias brought the child into the Holy of Holies—a place where only the High Priest was permittedto enter once a year on the Day of Atonement. He placed her on the steps of the altar, and the grace ofthe Lord descended upon her. She arose and expressed her joy in a dance as wonder seized all who sawthis happen.

The Virgin Mary dwelt in the Temple for nine years until, reaching an age for marriage, she was taken fromthe Temple by the priests and elders and entrusted to Joseph as the guardian of her virginity.

The Entrance of the Theotokos into the Temple signifies her total dedication to God and her readiness for herfuture vocation as the Mother of the Incarnate Lord. This is a feast of anticipation. As honor is shown to Mary, the faithful are called to look forward to the Incarnation of Christ, celebrated in a little more than a monthby the Feast of the Nativity on December 25.
