Inherent Risk Form

Cheerleading is an exciting, time-consuming sport that involves flyers, bases, spotters, and tumblers. Flyers are lifted into stunts by the bases, along with the safety-oriented spotters when needed. Bases and spotters are responsible for catching the flyers when the stunts come down. Cheerleading also requires forceful motions, tumbling, voice projection, jumping, lifting, and exercising. The cheering area varies greatly from one location to another, inside and outside. Because of these conditions inherent to the sport, participating in cheerleading exposes an athlete to many risks of injury. Those include, but are not limited to: paralysis due to serious neck/back injury, brain damage, damage to internal organs, serious injuries to bones, ligaments, joints, and tendons, general deterioration of health, and possibly death. Such injuries can result not only in temporary loss of function, but also in serious impairment of future physical, psychological, and social abilities, including the ability to earn a living.

In an effort to make cheerleading as safe as it can be, the coaching staff will instruct athletes concerning the correct techniques for stunts and rules of cheerleading. It is vital that the athletes follow the coach’s skilled instructions, training rules, and team policies to decrease the possibility of serious injury.

We have read the above stated information concerning the risk of cheerleading. We understand and assume all risk associated with trying out, practicing, or cheering at games/competitions. In signing this form, we assume the inherent risk of cheerleading and waive a future legal action by our heirs, estate, executor, administrator, assignees, family members, and ourselves.

PHILOSOPHY / PURPOSE

The purpose of the cheerleaders is to support the curricular and extracurricular activities of Hiram High School by promoting school spirit. Being a cheerleader is an honor and special privilege. Cheerleaders exist to promote good sportsmanship, good citizenship, and wholesome, enthusiastic, school spirit. Cheerleaders are first and foremost ambassadors of their school. Cheerleaders should exemplify both individual and group behavior suitable to their position in accordance with Paulding County School District and Hiram High School rules. Cheerleaders have a fundamental responsibility to play a leadership role in building teamwork and helping the school achieve its goals and objectives. Because of these responsibilities, members of the cheerleading squad will be expected to maintain a higher standard of behavior both on and off campus and academic achievement better than that of their peers.

COMMITMENT

Student athletes selected for the cheerleading squads are expected to make a total commitment to the team and to the sport. This involves seven key areas: Dedication, Character, Sportsmanship, Responsibility, Honor, Spirit, and Stability.

DEDICATION

Being a cheerleader is not all privilege; it involves sacrifice. Dedication is demonstrated by an athlete’s unselfishness and loyalty to his/her team and school. Throughout the seasons, there will be trying times as well as rewarding times; it is essential that cheerleaders maintain their loyalty to their team, coaches, and school. An organization is only as strong as its weakest member and cannot grow and survive without the loyalty and dedication of all members. Each cheerleader MUST remember that no individual is more important than the team. Cheerleaders may find that they disagree with coaching decisions and policies, but they MUST support and respect the decisions made. Cheerleading is a selfless endeavor. Cheerleaders are expected to maintain a positive attitude and build school spirit on and off the field and court without anything in return other than the satisfaction of a job well done.

CHARACTER

As a cheerleader you represent not only yourself and your family, but also your team, your school, and your community. As a cheerleader, you are the most visible of all Hiram students and athletes. We require that you represent your school well by demonstrating your respect for yourself and others at all times. In other words: do not be rude, discourteous and/or obnoxious. Be proud and confident, but not cocky and loud. Cheerleaders are expected to abide by rules of public displays of affection and to dress according to the dress code of the Paulding County School District, setting an example for other students. Cheerleaders are expected to be courteous and respectful when speaking with fellow students, teachers, administrators, and coaches. Back-talking and disrespectful language is not permitted.

Page 9: Hiram High School Cheerleading Tryout Packet 2019-2020hiramathletics.com/cheerleading/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/2019-2020...Mar 21, 2019  · Education, and its employees, agents,

SPORTSMANSHIP

Athletes selected for any cheerleading squad of The Hiram Cheerleading Program are expected to maintain the highest standards of sportsmanship at all times. Sportsmanship is a great tradition in sports and competition that means playing clean and handling both victory and defeat with grace, style, and dignity. Some people define good sportsmanship as the "golden rule" of sports — in other words, treating the people you play with and against as you'd like to be treated yourself. You demonstrate good sportsmanship when you show respect for yourself, your teammates, and your opponents, for the coaches on both sides, and for the referees, judges, and other officials. Everyone feels great when they win, but it can be just as hard to be a good sport when you've won a game as when you've lost one. Good sportsmanship takes maturity and courage. In competition — as in life — you may not always win but you can learn something from losing, too. It's pretty tough to lose, so it definitely doesn't help matters if someone continues taunting you or your team after the competition is over. Sometimes it's hard to swallow your pride and walk on. But there's always the next match. When you do lose — and it will happen — don't take it out on your opponent, blame the officials, or blame your team. Take it in stride. When you lose, lose with class. Being proud of how you performed, or at least being aware of things you need to improve for next time, is key. When it comes to losing, good sportsmanship means congratulating the winners promptly and willingly. Also, it means accepting the game's outcome without complaint and without excuses, even if you sometimes feel the referees or judges made a few questionable calls. When you win, the trick is to be a gracious and generous winner. Good sportsmanship means acknowledging victories without humiliating opponents, being quietly proud of success, and letting victories speak for themselves. Even if you win by a landslide, good sportsmanship means still finding ways to compliment your opponents.

RESPONSIBILITY

When a student/athlete makes a commitment to a team with the Hiram Cheerleading Program, the team, its members and the school count on that individual to carry out all of the duties and responsibilities that are included. It is the athlete’s responsibility to follow up on all assignments in and out of the classroom, check for announcements, and be present and active at all practices and other activities. It is for this reason, that if a cheerleader quits one squad, he/she quits all squads and will not be allowed to tryout again for one full school year. It is not enough for a cheerleader to “show up.” He/She must be prepared and appropriately engaged at all times. A cheerleader’s responsibility includes being physically and mentally prepared. Cheerleaders must arrive on time, with all their gear, dressed appropriately, with the right attitude, and prepared to be accountable. Cheerleaders are required to participate in numerous activities throughout the year. It is the cheerleader’s responsibility to keep up with provided schedules; there will not be constant reminders. Cheerleaders are expected to be responsible for themselves and their behavior at all times.

HONOR

Honor is a multifaceted concept. You must not only honor yourself, but you must also honor your family, teammates, coaches, school, and community. Making a total commitment is not an easy task; it involves self-discipline and respect. You must respect yourself and conduct yourself in an appropriate manner even when others do not. Further, cheerleaders will not “share” their Hiram cheerleading clothing and equipment with others.

Page 10: Hiram High School Cheerleading Tryout Packet 2019-2020hiramathletics.com/cheerleading/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/2019-2020...Mar 21, 2019  · Education, and its employees, agents,

SPIRIT

Cheerleaders demonstrate school and team spirit when their team wins and losses. It is a cheerleader’s job to focus on the positive and lead fans in positive cheers for their team. Cheerleaders never participate or encourage cheering against referees; they cheer louder, positively leading fans in an appropriate manner. Cheerleaders do not shout for a coach to make a change during a game. Cheerleaders speak positively about HHS and NEVER complain about “having to go to a game.” Cheerleaders work to encourage other students to come out and support their teams. Cheerleaders do not whine about lack of attendance; they improve it. Cheerleaders are honored to be asked to participate in extra events by ALL teams they support, not inconvenienced because of a lack of their own personal recognition or time.

STABILITY

Everything else is pointless if it is not done consistently with a constant level of effort. We all slip, but you MUST have the mental discipline to recognize your error and make it right. You must be willing to be there at every function, every practice, every game, and to be there for others. If your team cannot count on you, then you are not part of the team. If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem. Being a part of the team adds to the stability of your team. You must maintain a positive attitude. Be someone others can count on. Be a positive leader. Be a role model. Be consistent.

INJURIES

Cheerleading requires strenuous physical activity on the part of each cheerleader. It is the cheerleader’s responsibility to immediately notify the coach in the case of an injury. If the cheerleader requires taping or the like prior to a game or practice, the cheerleader is still expected to be on time. Cheerleading requires its athletes to be in top physical condition to avoid injury. Cheerleaders are expected to not only maintain their strength and agility, but to be working to improve those skills as well.

RULES

● Be at practice, games, and events on time. ● Be dressed appropriately. ● Be respectful! ● ALWAYS show good sportsmanship. ● Place Cell Phones in your cheer bag prior to practices and games. You cannot use them during this time. If

there is an emergency, you may use a coach’s phone.

Being late or missing practice will result disciplinary actions. Practice time cannot be made up and missing practice is a serious offense. Injured cheerleaders are required to be at every practice, as appropriate. There are legitimate reasons for missing practice; those must be cleared with the coach PRIOR to practice. We expect reasons for missing practice to be religious holidays, illness, or extreme family-related emergencies (not last-minute family plans, reunions, or concerts). If it becomes necessary to suspend or remove a cheerleader, the parent or guardian will be notified. The coaches reserve the right to determine each case on an individual basis.

Page 11: Hiram High School Cheerleading Tryout Packet 2019-2020hiramathletics.com/cheerleading/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/2019-2020...Mar 21, 2019  · Education, and its employees, agents,

ACADEMICS

HHS is a school with high expectations of its students. The cheerleading program at HHS will work to promote each cheerleader’s success in the classroom as well as on the sidelines, court, and mat. An athlete’s grades should go up, not down during the season. Athletics is NOT an excuse for failing grades. A true athlete is well disciplined and realizes that the sacrifices required to become a member of team does NOT include academics. Free time, social time, and wasted time must be sacrificed, if necessary, for your academic and athletic well-being. Our priority is proper academic advancement. We do NOT support a student athlete taking an easier class during the season; we expect our athletes to keep their priorities straight and to challenge themselves at all times. Cheerleaders will not be discipline problems in or out of season; they will be focused and on-task in class. The following are suggestions for success in the classroom:

● Sit toward the front of the class. ● Bring all materials to class daily and do your homework. ● Study ● Be respectful ● Make each teacher feel his/her class is your most important class. ● Set a positive example for other students by your words and actions.

CREED

● We work together. We win and lose as one. ● We are open and honest. ● We are trustworthy and unselfish. ● We keep our heads up and our attitudes positive. ● We work hard to improve our skills. ● We set high standards for ourselves. ● We are students of and ambassadors of Hiram High School and the PCSD. ● We are responsible for our own behavior and resulting positive/negative consequences thereof.

UNIFORMS / EQUIPMENT

If a cheerleader loses his/her uniforms or equipment, he/she will be required to pay for a replacement. Cheerleaders will only be charged what the program pays for the item. Uniforms must be returned, cleaned, in their original condition. Cheerleaders and their parents are expected to pay for cleaning expenses and/or replacement costs for uniforms that are returned soiled and/or damaged. Uniforms are NOT to be altered in any way. The uniform is the PROGRAMS, not the cheerleader’s. Any cheerleader that alters their uniform will be required to pay for a replacement.

The Hiram Cheer Program reserves the right to collect a nonrefundable rental fee for uniforms that are distributed. If a uniform is returned in any condition which would render it unusable or in need of repair, the parents will be responsible for the damages. Any uniform not returned by the due date will be considered lost and the parents will be charged for a replacement.

Lettering Requirements

Varsity Letters are awarded by coaches to athletes based upon the following criteria:

● Cheerleader must cheer at the varsity level. ● Cheerleader must attend all practices, games and/or competitions, unless properly excused by a coach. ● Cheerleader may not be disciplined more than 3 times.

*If a cheerleader quits or is dismissed from a squad, he/she forfeits his/her letter privileges for that squad.

Cheer shoes should be white and in good condition for all games, competitions, and events. I. Uniforms should be cared for properly and clean at all times. Do not use irons on uniforms. Do not use

chlorine bleach. Uniforms should be washed in cold water and laid flat to dry. J. Uniform, practice wear, jerseys, warm-up jackets, etc. may only be worn by a Hiram Cheerleader. These

items should never be given out to friends and family to wear. K. Failure to be in complete and proper uniform will result in disciplinary actions which will include the

cheerleader sitting out of the game or event and disciplinary action will be decided by the individual coach. Cheerleaders should come to games prepared for any type of weather.

L. The team will be in uniform at all times, so everyone should make sure to bring all issued necessities or expect to sit out of the game. This means that if we are on the field, court, or at an event, all squad members are matching! If we are wearing our jackets on a cold night, you ALL are wearing your jackets. Therefore, Pack all of your apparel that is needed in your cheer bag on Sunday night for the week.

VIII. Dismissal

A. Offenses that result in dismissal: a. 5 demerits during a season or year or sitting out of 3 games. b. Failing 2 or more classes after probationary period in a semester. c. Unbecoming conduct (use of drugs, alcohol, profane language, stealing, smoking, fighting, disrespect

to adults, being jailed for any reason, or exhibiting inappropriate behavior. This includes but is not limited to disrespecting a teammate, coach, and/or member of the community)

d. Although the coaches do not monitor social media, if it is reported that a cheerleader is in uniform and has posted pictures that misrepresent our program, that cheerleader and her parents will be contacted. Once that conference has occurred, if the situation continues, the cheerleader will be removed from the team. Cheerleaders who are dismissed are still responsible for the payment of supplies.

e. Cheerleaders are expected to perform all skills exhibited at tryouts (tumbling, stunting, etc.) Failure to perform the same skill during the season results in dismissal from the team.

Page 17: Hiram High School Cheerleading Tryout Packet 2019-2020hiramathletics.com/cheerleading/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/2019-2020...Mar 21, 2019  · Education, and its employees, agents,

IX. General

A. Drama free attitude & behavior. If you choose not to be a team player and disrespect your coach and/or teammates with verbal or body language, (rolling eyes, name calling, etc.), then disciplinary action will be taken.

B. Cheerleaders are expected to maintain appropriate behavior. Any behavior which is deemed by an administrator as reflecting poorly on the intended image of the school is grounds for dismissal from the cheerleading squad.

C. Cheerleaders should act in a respectful manner at all times to parents, teachers, athletes and students while in or out of uniform. Cheerleaders are not to engage in affectionate behavior towards boyfriends at any time while in uniform. This includes public displays of affection (hugging, kissing, etc). Such actions will result in disciplinary action by their individual coach.

D. Cheerleaders are expected to attend a banquet at the end of each athletic season. E. All cheerleaders understand and acknowledge their commitment to any squad; therefore, if a

cheerleader does not complete the full season with a squad, then the cheerleader forfeits her opportunity to tryout or participate on any cheerleading squad for one full year from time of dismissal. The only exceptions to this rule may be made concerning the illness of a cheerleader or an immediate family member, or someone who becomes academically ineligible but corrects it before the next cheerleading season.

X. Academics

A. Cheerleaders are expected to be STUDENT-athletes and put a high priority on academic performance. Cheerleaders are expected to pass all classes they are currently taking. Grades will be checked every 4 ½ weeks and appropriate action will be taken for failing grades.

● 1 or more failing grades – probation (max 4 ½ weeks to bring it/them up) ● 1 failing grade after probation – no practice or games until it is brought up. If still

failing after an additional 4 ½ weeks, cheerleader will be dismissed from the team ● 2 or more failing grades after initial probationary period, cheerleader will be

dismissed from the team

XI. Cheerleading Demerits:

The following is a list of infractions that result in a demerit or disciplinary actions. These are for things related to cheerleading and handled within the normal cheerleading routine. The administration and coaches reserve the right to make changes as deemed necessary on a case-by-case basis.

It is each cheerleader’s responsibility to be aware of each infraction. Coaches will not remind or give warnings. Per five demerits accumulated, the cheerleader is required to sit out of one game. If a cheerleader accumulates more than 15 demerits, his or her position—on any given squad—will be voted on by the Hiram Hornet Coaching Staff. In other words, if the staff is in favor of revoking a cheerleader’s spot on a team, he or she will be asked to leave.

The following will include a demerit from a game or competition. Any cheerleader, who is suspended from a game for any reason other than illness, is expected to sit with the coach in uniform.

□ Late to practice, game, or event according to scheduled time given - be early! □ Cell phone out during practice, game, or event. □ Eating during practice or games (with the exception of half-time) □ Not in proper uniform (includes hair bow, poms, socks, shoes, briefs, sleeves, etc.) □ School detention or Saturday school (tardies included) – Cheerleader’s responsibility to inform coach. □ Other infractions at coach’s discretion which include disrespecting teammates or coaches. □ Stunting or Tumbling without presence and acknowledgement of coach □ Hair not pulled back into a high, centered ponytail at a practice, game, or event.
