What is HIPAA?

“The HIPAA Privacy Rule establishes national standards to protect individuals' medical records and other personal health information and applies to health plans, health care clearinghouses, and those health care providers that conduct certain health care transactions electronically” (HHS.gov).

HIPAA and the Privacy Act was created to protect our patient’s personal information.

You have a responsibility to ensure that their information is always protected.

Violations

If you violate the HIPAA or Privacy Act policies in any way, you will be punished to the fullest extent.

First violation: Warning Second violation: 2 week supension without pay Third violation: Termination

Quick Tips

Always make sure you lock your computer when not in use.

Make sure you shred all PII (Personal Identification Information).

Only access the patient’s information when it pertains to your job.
