Funeral services will be 10:30a.m. Wednesday, July 28, 2010 atTrinity Lutheran Church inYankton, with Rev. DavidWildermuth officiating. Burial willfollow in Elim Cemetery, ruralIrene, SD.

Visitation will begin one hourprior to services on Wednesday,July 28, at the church.

Ruth Anna (Deutscher)Pearson was born April 2, 1923near Scotland, South Dakota toGus and Anna (Sayler) Deutscher.She attended rural grade schooland graduated from ScotlandHigh School in 1941. She thenattended beauty school in SiouxFalls, South Dakota.

Ruth was united in marriage toDale V. Pearson on June 4, 1943,in Hartington, Nebraska. Thisunion was blessed with two chil-dren, Wayne and David.

Ruth and Dale lived inCalifornia while Dale was sta-tioned there during WWII. Afterthe war they moved to Scotlandfor a short time and then farmedin the Midway area for severalyears. They moved into Yanktonin the early 60's, where Daleworked at Gurney's and Ruthoperated a beauty shop. She con-tinued with her business after

Dale's death on May 14, 1975.Ruth operated several beautyshops, a dress shop and a bridalshop over 60 plus years. Aftersome health problems she movedto Heartland Care Center inMarcus, Iowa in February of 2006.

Ruth was a member of TrinityLutheran Church, several profes-sional organizations, variousclubs, and Sweet Adeline's for 30years.

Her greatest enjoyment wastime spent with family andfriends and especially her grand-children and great-grandchildren.She will always be rememberedfor her willingness to help any-one who needed help and her col-lections of various items, and herdelicious apple pies.

Ruth is survived by her twosons and their families: Wayneand Betty Pearson, Susan andKyle Krier, Preston, Ethan, Anna,and Jadyn, Michelle and KeithBittner, Mallorie, David andLucille Pearson, Lisa and GerryAlesch, Owen and Wyatt, JoePearson, also one brother and hisfamily; John and Glee Deutscher,Nola and Roger Varilek, Tiffanyand Trevor, Jeff and MaureenDeutscher, Jeremy, Nick, andAnnie, Jay and Beth Deutscher,Jill and Jenna.

Ruth was preceded in deathby her parents, her husbandDale, grandson BenjaminPearson, and sister-in-law VirgiePearson.

Shewas a reserved lady who didn’toften tell stories, but occasion-ally, things would slip out! Shewould talk about how she drovethe large trucks and tractorsfrom the dealership and howshocked the men would bewhen she jumped out. With asparkle in her eye, she wouldcasually mention about howyou could “whip cookies” on thefrozen lake in the middle ofFergus Falls if you knew exactlywhere to drive the car betweenthe barriers. Dorothy was livingin Fergus Falls after the warwhen she started dating a dash-ing navy electrician namedBernard Peterson. They weremarried on May 9, 1947 andwere together until Bernard’sdeath in 1995. Over their mar-ried time, they lived in severalplaces in ND including Lansford,Velva, Devils Lake, Bismarck,and Hazen. They had two chil-dren, Jeffrey and April. Dorothywas an independent woman ofstrength, perseverance, faith,kindness, gentleness and love.She taught her children whatwas important in life. SinceBernard’s death in 1995,Dorothy resided in Williston, NDwith her daughter until enteringBethel Lutheran Home inJanuary 2009. Dorothy lovedanimals, and enjoyed nappingwith her cat, Meg. She spent thelast weeks of her life in Yanktonliving near her grand-daughterand enjoying her great-grandchildren.

loved to play cards and wascompetitive, even though herteam usually lost. Dorothyenjoyed many things about life,but mostly she loved to spoilher grandchildren. She madethe best liverwurst sandwichesand always was ready with ahug, a smile, and that sparkle inher eye when they were around.

Dorothy is survived by herdaughter, April of Williston, ND;granddaughter, Beryl (ByronOlson) of Yankton, SD; grand-sons, Brendt Peterson ofDenver, CO and Bryce Petersonof Marshall, MN; daughter-in-law, Kandice Vandendriesscheof Marshall, MN; great-grand-children, Brynann and Bryton;many nieces and nephews.

Dorothy has gone on to bewith her Lord; her husband,Bernard; son, Jeffrey; parents;brothers, Herman and Richard;and many other extended familymembers. She will be greatlymissed here.

In 1952, shemoved to Yankton and beganworking at the former AmericanState Bank in Yankton for thenext 33 years. She was a formermember of the NationalAssociation of Bank Women(N.A.B.W) where she served as

Chairman. For five years, shevolunteered at Sister JamesNursing Home. She enjoyedembroidering and playing cardsand bingo. She was a member ofthe United Church of Christ inScotland, SD.

When they reached the boatdock on the east end of the park,Hines said a man pulled up in aminivan and ran down the dock.

“We didn’t know who the guywas, so my uncle started backingup the boat,” he stated.

However, the man managedto inform them there was a sus-pect who had jumped off thebridge and was wanted bypolice.

“Right then, a police officerpulls up and kicks open hisdoor,” Hines said. “He left hisdoor open and came runningdown the dock. He said, “Halt!Police!”

Hines and the other four indi-viduals in the boat helpedOfficer Monty Rothenberger getinto the boat in an attempt to

rescue Brewer.“The officer and I were look-

ing and looking, and then sawthe guy going under the water,”Hines said. “He wasn’t even mak-ing much noise. We threw him acouple life preservers, and hedidn’t grab them. He didn’t evenreact to them.”

At that point, Hines knewwhat he had to do. As a formernaval aircrewman, he had exten-sive training in saving drowningvictims. His hand was in a castafter breaking it recently, butthat didn’t stop him.

“I ripped off my cast anddove in with my shirt on andeverything,” he said. “I gotbehind the guy and pulled himup as he was sinking.”

Hines managed to get Brewerinto the boat and Hines’ uncle,Mark Schlaefli, navigated thevessel back to the dock. Brewerdid not require CPR and hadbecome aware of his surround-ings by the time the boatreached shore, Hines stated.

The suspect was ultimately

arrested for driving under theinfluence (first), aggravated elud-ing, careless driving and posses-sion of marijuana.

The whole experience was“crazy,” according to Hines.

“I was taking it easy that day,and then the next thing we knowthere’s an officer getting in ourboat and I’m jumping in the waterafter this guy and apprehending asuspect,” he said. “I had beentrained to save a drowning indi-vidual tons of times but I neverhad to use it. I never thought thattraining would come into effect.”

Hines said he was glad he wasin the right place at the right timeto save a man’s life.

“That was a pretty cool experi-ence to share with my uncle(Mark),” he added. “I’ve alwayslooked up to him, and we reallygot to do something specialtogether.”

And despite acting against thedoctor’s orders, Hines said he ishaving no problems with his help-ing hand.

“My hand is healing up anddoing fine,” he stated.
