y Situated at an altitude of 1065 mt. at the meeting pointof the Vindhya and the Satpura mountain rangesamongst sylvan surroundings, Amarkantak is a greatpilgrim centre for the Hindus, and is the source of the

rivers Narmada and Sone. While the Narmada flowsWestwards from Amarkantak, the Sone flows towardsthe East. Amarkantak is indeed blessed by Nature.Holy ponds, lofty hills, forested surroundings,breathtakingly beautiful waterfalls and an ever-pervading air of serenity make Amarkantak a muchsought-after destination for the religious-minded aswell as for the nature-lover.

y This is a small National Park; compact, yet full ofgame. The density of the Tiger population atBandhavgarh is the highest known in India.

This is also White Tiger country. These have beenfound in the old state of Rewa for many years. The lastknown was captured by Maharajah Martand Singh in1951. This White Tiger, Mohan, is now stuffed and on

display in the palace of the Maharajahs of Rewa.

y Soaring in glittering splendour, the Marble Rocks atBhedaghat rise to a hundred feet on either side of theNarmada. The serene loveliness of the scene is one of coolquiet, the sunlight sparkling on the marble-white pinnacles

and casting dappled shadows on the pellucid waters. Thesewhite rocks with views of black and dark green volcanicseams are truly majestic, and produce a magical effect onmoonlit nights.

y The holy river flows by tranquilly flanked by the toweringcliffs which reflect in it like a mirror the changing moods ofnature. A little distance away, it becomes turbulent as itplunges in a mighty water fall known as Dhuandhar.

y Surrounded by the northern fringe of the Vindhyanranges, Bhimbetka lies 46 km South of Bhopal. In thisrocky terrain of dense forest and craggy cliffs, over 600

rock shelters belonging to the Neolithic age wererecently discovered. Here, in vivid panoramic detail,paintings in over 500 caves depict the life of the pre-historic cave-dwellers making the Bhimbetka group anarchaeological treasure, an invaluable chronicle in thehistory of man.

y Founded by the legendary Parmar King of Dhar, RajaBhoj (1010-1053), and named after him, Bhojpur, 28 kmfrom Bhopal, is renowned for the remains of itsmagnificent Shiva temple and Cyclopean dam.

y The temple which has earned the nomenclature of theSomnath of the east, is known as the BhojeshwarTemple. The temple was never completed and theearthen ramp used to raise it to dome-level still stands.

Had it been completed, it would have had very fewrivals. As it is, even with the ravages of time, it remainsone of the best examples of temple architecture of the11th - 13th centuries.

y The documented history of Chanderi goes back to theearly 11th century and is a kaleidoscope of movementand activity prompted by its strategic location. On the

borders of Malwa and Bundelkhand, the towndominated the trade routes of Central India and wasproximate to the arterial route to the ancient ports ofGujarat as well as to Malwa, Mewar, Central India andthe Deccan. Consequently, Chanderi became animportant military outpost, prized by rulers withpower or ambition, and repeatedly experienced themight of men who moulded the destiny of Hindustan.

y Chitrakoot, 'the hill of many wonders', nestles peacefully inthe northern spurs of the Vindhyas, a place of tranquilforest glades and quiet rivers, and streams where calm andrepose are all pervading. This loveliest of Nature's gifts is

also hallowed ground, blessed by the gods and sanctifiedby the faith of pilgrims. For Chitrakoot's spiritual legacystretches back to legendary ages: it was in these deepforests that Rama and Sita spent eleven of their fourteen

years of exile; here that the great sage Atri and SatiAnusuya meditated; and here where the principal trinity ofthe Hindu pantheon, Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh, tooktheir incarnations.

y Planned and built by Rani Ahilyabai, the brave Holkarqueen, Indore lies to the extreme west of Madhya Pradeshon the banks of the rivers Saraswati and Khan which uniteat the centre of the city. The bustling and vibrant city, 186km from Bhopal, derives its name from the 18th century

Indreshwar temple.y The history of Indore is inseparable from the history of the

Holkar State. The founder of the House of Holkars wasMalhar Rao Holkar, born in 1693 AD. His soldierly qualitiesbrought him to the forefront under the Peshwa and he was

rewarded with the gift of territories comprising the Indoreregion. Malhar Rao was succeeded by his grandson, onwhose death, without issue, his mother, Maharani DeviAhilya Bai ascended the throne.

y Pleasure resort and capital of the Gond Kings duringthe 12th century, Jabalpur was later the seat of theKalchuri dynasty. The Marathas held sway over

Jabalpur until 1817, when the British wrested it fromthem and left their impression on the spaciouscantonment with its colonial residences and barracks.Today Jabalpur is an important administrative centre,abustle with commercial activity.

y Kanha's sal and bamboo forests, rolling grasslands andmeandering streams stretch over 940 sq km in dramaticnatural splendour which form the core of the Kanha TigerReserve created in 1974 under Project Tiger. The park is the

only habitat of the rare hardground Barasingha.

y By a special statute in 1955, Kanha National Park came intobeing. Since then, a series of stringent conservationprogrammes for the protection of the park's flora and fauna

has given Kanha its deserved reputation for being one ofthe finest and best administered National Parks in Asia, anirresistible attraction for all wildlife lovers and a true havenfor its animal and avian population

y In the temple architecture of India, the Khajurahocomplex remains unique. One thousand years ago,under the generous and artistic patronage of theChandela Rajput kings of Central India, 85 temples,

magnificent in form and richly carved, came up on onesite, near the village of Khajuraho. The amazinglyshort span of 100 years, from 950 AD - 1050 AD, sawthe completion of all the temples, in an inspired burstof creativity. Today, of the original 85, only 22 havesurvived the ravages of time; these remain as acollective paean to life, to joy and to creativity; to theultimate fusion of man with his creator.

y Maheshwar was a glorious city at the dawn of Indiancivilization when it was Mahishmati, capital of kingKartivarjun. This temple town on the banks of the river

Narmada finds mention in the epics of Ramayana andMahabharata. Revived to its ancient position ofimportance by the Holkar queen Rani Ahilyabai ofIndore. Maheshwar's temples and mighty fort-complexstand in quiet beauty, mirrored in the river below.

y Today, Maheshwar is also known for its distinctivehandwoven sarees called Maheshwari.

y Perched along the Vindhya ranges at an altitude of2,000 feet, Mandu, with its natural defenses, wasoriginally the fort capital of the Parmar rulers of

Malwa. Towards the end of the 13th century, it cameunder the sway of the Sultans of Malwa, the first ofwhom named it Shadiabad - 'city of joy'. And indeedthe pervading spirit of Mandu was of gaiety; and itsrulers built exquisite palaces like the Jahaz andHindola Mahals, ornamental canals, baths andpavilions, as graceful and refined as those times ofpeace and plenty

y Omkareshwar, the sacred island, shaped like theholiest of all Hindu symbols, 'Om', has drawn to ithundreds of generations of pilgrims. Here, at the

confluence of the rivers Narmada andK

averi, thedevout gather to kneel before the Jyotirlinga (one ofthe twelve throughout India) at the temple of ShriOmkar Mandhata. And here, as in so many of MadhyaPradesh's sacred shrines, the works of Naturecomplement those of man to provide a setting awe-inspiring in its magnificence.

y Orchha's grandeur has been captured in stone, frozen in time, arich legacy to the ages. In this medieval city, the hand of time hasrested lightly and the palaces and temples built by its Bundelarulers in the 16th and 17th centuries retain much of their pristineperfection.

y Orchha was founded in the 16th century by the Bundela Rajputchieftain, Rudra Pratap, who chose this stretch of land along theBetwa river as an ideal site for his capital. Of the succeedingrulers, the most notable was Raja Bir Singh Ju Deo who built theexquisite Jehangir Mahal, a tiered palace crowned by gracefulchhatris. From here the view of soaring temple spires and

cenotaphs is spectacular.y Complementing the noble proportions of their exteriors are

interiors which represent the finest flowering of the Bundelaschool of painting. In the Laxminarayan Temple and Raj Mahal,vibrant murals encompassing a variety of religious and secularthemes, bring the walls and ceilings to rich life.

y Pench Tiger Reserve comprises the Indira PriyadarshiniPench National Park, the Mowgli Pench Sanctuary and abuffer. The Park nestles in the Southern slopes of theSatpura ranges of Central India. The river Pench, whichsplits the National Park into two, forms the lifeline of the

Park.y The area of the present tiger reserve has a glorious history.

A description of its natural wealth and richness occurs inAin-i-Akbari. Several natural history books like R.A.Strendale's 'Seonee - Camp life in Satpura Hills,' Forsyth's

'Highlands of Central India' and Dunbar Brander's 'WildAnimals of Central India' explicitly present the detailedpanorama of nature's abundance in this tract. Strendale'ssemi-autobiographical 'Seonee' was the inspiration behindRudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book.

y Sanchi is known for its Stupas, monasteries, templesand pillars dating from the 3rd century B.C. to the 12thcentury A.D. The most famous of these monuments,

the Sanchi Stupa 1, was originally built by the MauryanEmperor Ashoka, the then governor of Ujjayini, whosewife Devi was the daughter of a merchant fromadjacent Vidisha. Their son Mahindra and daughterSanghamitra were born in Ujjayini and sent to Sri

Lanka, where they converted the King, the Queen andtheir people to Buddhism.

y Shivpuri is steeped in the royal legacy of its past, whenit was the summer capital of the Scindia rulers ofGwalior. And earlier, its dense forests were the hunting

grounds of the Mughal emperors when great herds ofelephants were captured by emperor Akbar.

y Much later, it was the Tiger that roamed the woodedhills and many a magnificent beast was 'bagged' byroyal Shikaris. Today Shivpuri is a sanctuary for rarewildlife and avifauna. Its royal past has thus beentransformed into a vibrant, hopeful present.

y Modern Ujjain is situated on the banks of the river Shipra,regarded since times immemorial as sacred. The belief inthe sacredness of Shipra, has its origins in the ancientHindu mythological tale of churning of the Ocean by the

Gods and the Demons, with Vasuki, the serpent as therope. The ocean bed first yielded fourteen gems, thenLakshmi, the Goddess of wealth, and finally the covetedvessel of Nectar. Then began the wild scramble for

immortality with the demons chasing the Gods across theskies, and in the process, a few drops were spilt, and fell atHardwar, Nasik, Prayag, and Ujjayini. Hence the sanctity ofthe waters of the Shipra

y This colourful festival of the Bhils and Bhilalas, particularlyin the district of West Nimar and Jhabua, is actually in thenature of a mass svayamvara, a marriage market, usuallyheld on the various market days falling before the Holifestival in March. As the name of the festival indicates,

(bhag, to run), after choosing their partners, the youngpeople elope and are subsequently accepted as husbandand wife by society through predetermined customs. It isnot always that boys and girls intending to marry eachother meet in the festival for the first time. In a largenumber of cases the alliance is already made between thetwo, the festival providing the institutionalised frameworkfor announcing the alliance publically. The tradition is thatthe boy applies gulal, red powder, on the face of the girlwhom he selects as his wife. The girl, if willing, also appliesgulal on the boy's face. This may not happen immediately

but the boy may pursue her and succeed eventually.
