The club was founded in 1905 and the par-69 course is highly regarded in the North West, stretching to 5,926 yards and providing a fair but challenging test of golf for players of any handicap. Many holes are tree lined, with a lake coming into play on the first and eleventh holes.

A number of major developments and improvements have taken place in recent years. All 18 greens have been re-laid, new tees added, trees planted and drainage improved. The clubhouse has also benefited from significant renovation to the lounge and dining room and is ideal for post-round refreshments with magnificent views across the course.

Hindley Hall has a full competitive golfing calendar, which is extremely well supported by our members. Our resident club professional, David Clarke, along with his staff, provide a fully stocked and comprehensive range of golf equipment and is also available for tuition.

The splendid clubhouse is the perfect venue for wedding receptions and other special occasions, as well as for business meetings.

One of the first things that strikes you as you make your way through the entrance and along the drive is the imposing brick building ahead of you. This is Hindley Hall, our fine clubhouse, which dates back several centuries.

There is evidence that the hall has been rebuilt over the years by various owners, many of whom were notable Barristers and Parliamentarians of their day.

One of these, Sir Robert Holt Leigh, was said to be the greatest snuff taker in England. He was also a great epicure and generally

tasted every dish on the table. He rebuilt the hall from his own designs but forgot to include a staircase!

Sir Robert was first returned to Parliament in 1802 as a member for Wigan and continued to represent his native borough until the year 1820. He became Baron Whitley of Wigan in 1815.

Through his life Sir Robert interested himself in all matters relating to the town of Wigan, and was a trustee of Wigan Grammar School. Also a magistrate and Deputy Lieutenant of the County, he died at Hindley Hall on the 21st January, 1843, aged 81.

A Brief HistoryIn 1905 the Club was formed by Wigan Coal & Iron Company as a private Golf Club “for senior members of staff and invited guests only.” In the mid 1930s the course became the private Golf Club as it is known today.

Golfers of all abilities will find something to challenge their game, but never unfairly, though the Standard Scratch Score matching the par of 69 from the white tees is indication that the layout is no pushover.

“You need to be accurate and particularly straight off the tees,” says Head Professional David Clarke. “It’s not a long course, but when we host open events no-one tears the course to pieces.

“It’s a challenging golf course that rewards accuracy more than anything else.”

A mixture of trees and heavy rough borders many of the fairways, so think carefully on the tee before automatically plucking the driver from your bag.

The greens at Hindley Hall are renowned for their excellent surfaces, members now benefiting from the club’s decision to have them relaid several years ago. Quick and true and undulating in places, proficient putters should prosper.

The CourseThe course measures 5,926 yards from the white medal tees. There are two par 5s - the 3rd and the 10th - and the five par-3s mean there is no shortage of choice for nearest the pin competitions.

Club and trolley repairs can happily be undertaken and the Pro Shop is also the place to head for if you just need a drink to pop in your golf bag or to hire a trolley.

There is a vast practice ground around 300 yards in length which affords members and green fee-paying visitors for the day the opportunity to hit any club in the bag including driver.

There are targets for focused practice and hitting off less-forgiving natural turf gives the player much more accurate feedback on how they are truly striking the golf ball.

There is a chipping area around 400 yards from the clubhouse which is a former green itself and therefore kept in as equally fine condition as the surfaces to be found on the course.

There are also two practice bunkers and a practice net for warming up before a round, in addition to an excellent practice putting green next to the clubhouse.

Membership offers the opportunity to play golf regularly, maintain a recognised handicap, improve through shared culture and enjoy the club life.

Hindley Hall is a competitive club with competitions on most Saturdays, Sundays and Wednesdays for Gentlemen and Thursday for Ladies. We pride ourselves in keeping membership figures lower than our peer group to ensure tee times are always available for competitions entries - there are no ballot systems here!

We have teams in both the Bolton and South Lancashire League

and are recent winners of the prestigious Victory Trophy. Several leagues are also run during the winter months.

A full social calendar is available to members with a discounted bar card scheme also available. A House Membership is available to those non-golfers simply wishing to make use of the club’s excellent off-course facilities.

Becoming a MemberHindley Hall Golf Club welcomes applications for membership from existing golfers new to the area, golfers from other local clubs and keen beginners.

Younger golfers at Hindley Hall can learn not only the skills necessary to be able to enjoy the game, but about course management and rules and etiquette. If acquired early, these building blocks can provide a firm foundation which should stand the young golfer in good stead for the rest of their playing life.

Juniors play in a Bolton League. They also have a Junior Victory Trophy where they play all the clubs from around the Wigan area, a prestigious one-day event which clubs take turn to host.

Regular lessons take place at the club on Saturday mornings with Graham Caunce. You don’t have to belong to Hindley Hall to attend and we would be delighted to see you. For those eager to see if golf is the sport for them, we can provide clubs so there is no expensive initial outlay.

JuniorsHindley Hall has a growing junior section which the club is keen to expand further and there are membership opportunities available for younger players eager to take up the game wishing to emulate their golfing heroes or for those looking to expand on skills they already possess.

There are two bars, one of which is in the main lounge, and both are always well stocked with a wide selection of beers, wines, and spirits and a choice of soft drinks.

Hot and cold food is served daily seven days a week. You can enjoy a good selection of tasty snacks at the bar or choose to eat in our separate dining room upstairs, which is where we also host our golfing societies and after-match meals following club matches.

In addition, our in-house catering team will be pleased to accommodate individual preferences, requirements and special requests. We will be delighted to discuss alternative menus if you prefer.

One of the ways in which we can do this is by staging a number of open competitions throughout the year aimed at golfers from all walks of life and all abilities.

The season normally starts with a team event for women towards the end of May. This is generally one of four ladies’ competitions held throughout the year, featuring various formats such as Texas scrambles or the best two scores to count.

Senior golfers are also well looked after, with a trio of fourball betterball events available to enter for players aged 55 and over,

one of which takes place in our golfing week held in the middle of August.

There are also pairs events for men and a mixed competition, so everyone is catered for. Entry fees are very reasonable and there will always be refreshment available in the clubhouse on the day.

Event formats may differ slightly from year to year, but you can find details of upcoming events on our website, together with information about how you can reserve your place.

Open CompetitionsHindley Hall is an historic golf club with a rich heritage dating back to the founding of our club in 1905. We know we have something special here and nothing gives us greater pleasure than to share the enjoyment of our magnificent course with people who may not have experienced it before.

An extensive and varied programme of social events is organised throughout the year, with the aim being that there should be something to appeal to everyone, whatever their taste in entertainment.

One of the highlights of the year is the Captain’s Dinner held at the start of October.

Musical entertainment is very popular, with tribute bands as well as other acts a regular in the Hindley Hall social calendar.

Christmas is a special time of year for everyone and there is a dance for the grown-ups and a children’s Christmas party which invariably

features a visit from Father Christmas. There are also dances and discos and members traditionally spend a memorable and enjoyable New Year’s Eve together at the club.

We have a snooker table in a dedicated snooker room downstairs in the clubhouse and this is very popular with members.

The social diary on our website is regularly updated, so please take a look to get an idea of the entertainment on offer.

Social ActivitiesWith its friendly membership and historic and welcoming clubhouse, it will come as no surprise that Hindley Hall members have equally as enjoyable a time off the course as they do on it.

DirectionsFrom M61 southbound. Leave motorway at junction 6 taking the 3rd exit onto A6027 signposted for the A6. At the roundabout take 1st exit onto A6 Chorley Road, signed for Westhoughton and after 500 yards, at the traffic lights, turn right onto Dicconon Lane (B5239). Remain on this road for 1 mile before turning left at the mini-roundabout into Hall Lane. The club entrance is on the right-hand side after 1 mile.

From M61 northbound. Leave motorway at junction 6 taking 1st exit onto A6027 signposted for A6. The directions are as above.

From WiganTake the A577 to Hindley, before turning left on to the A58 (Market Street). Take the first exit at the next roundabout on to Ladies Lane and follow this road for around half a mile on to Hall Lane. You will come to the entrance to the club on your left.

From the SouthTake the A573 and then the A58 or simply the A58 through Hindley, taking the first exit at the first roundabout on the north side of the town on to Ladies Lane before following the directions above.

From the EastTake the A577 to Hindley, turning right onto the A58 Market Street at the main crossroads in the town and then following the directions above.

Public TransportThe nearest railway station is at Hindley, which is around half a mile away. Wigan Wallgate and Wigan North Western stations are just four miles or a ten-minute taxi-ride away.
